Have you ever felt horrified by a nightmare?
In the past i had nightmares very often, due to unresolved issues that persisted in my mind. Now i rarely see a real nightmare, witnessing instead dreams of more varying psychical tones.

Most people seem to have nightmares of the somatic-harming type, ie where parts of their body are harmed, or at risk of being harmed. But i am more interested in different kinds.

This is my recollection of a nightmare i had when i was 10. I still am unsure just what it meant, but it was very strong and i woke up terrified.
I was summoned in a void, where above a massive circle of glowing animal heads kept revolving. One of them spoke, which appeared to be their leader, and was the head of a lion. I do not recall what else it said, just that "...if you ever go against your mother again you will be destroyed"

After waking up i was so afraid that i immediately went to wake up my mother and ask her forgiveness for a little fight we had earlier that day.

Now the dream was not just about that little unpleasantness. My relation with my parents was problematic at best. But i am not sure what the deity-like multi-cephalus animal-being was supposed to represent.

But i do know that i am looking forward to reading about memorable nightmares you had. This will probably be a red-diamond thread, so post only serious replies ;)

The only nightmare I can think off is the one in which my parents were on a dark graveyard and tried to eat me.
Pretty horrifying if you consider I was 5.
Don't know what it represents, and I'm not sure if I want to know that :hide:

That sounds absolutely horrifying. I cannot recall any serious nightmares I have had, the worst one I could think of is when I was about 12 I had a dream of our house burning down and then awaking to relief that it was not real.

There was one I had when I was probably five or six, the memory of which has stuck with me through the years.

I was standing on my bed, but it was reaaally big, like, acres wide. I was being chased by a witch on her broom, and running for my life. But I couldn't run very fast, it was like my legs were weighed down! (I find this a lot in my dreams, I think it comes from the lack of adrenaline because it's not really happening) I was running and looking behind me, and the witch was gaining. Then I suddenly reached the edge, and began to fall off! The weird part was, the "edge" of my bed was actually the terraced far side of the parking pad for our cars, which was at the top of a hill that I was never allowed to go down. Anyway, I was clawing and clawing at my big red comforter, trying not to fall off! Yet I kept on sliding. And when I finally lost my grip....I woke up crying my eyes out.

I remember the rest of that night, too. My dad came to see what was the matter, since he was already up (he struggled with insomnia from his sleep apnea before we got him a breathing machine), and we sat in the dining room watching the thermometer go back and forth between -1F, 0F, and 1F.

I can see why that would terrify you, and at your age, I'd feel the same. However, I gotta admit, that sounds really cool!

Thank you :)

Yes,it is an interesting image. I tried to incorporate it in some of my stories but did not manage to yet, due to the lack of knowing its definition.

Someone I love dying of some illness, and their family and the hospital preventing me from even seeing them because they didn't know who I was. It was a pretty direct reflection of a big part of my subconscious at the time.

I had a recurring dream when I was very young where I was in this sort of fantasy meadow which was very beautiful, and there was a book lying on the ground. A talking book, trying to lure me in to something. I don't know what it was but it scared the hell out of me.

A later one, the only one I can remember actually waking up sweating and terrified, only real nightmare I've had after childhood really. I was at the bottom of a deep dungeon looking circular pit with several levels upwards along its edges. At the center of the bottom there was this pitch black hole or puddle that I just knew was a passage to something horrible(hell?). I then had to fight my way up the levels, fighting demonic dogs or something like that complete with 90's looking videogame graphics. Not scary at all. However when I reached the top there was a platform and somehow I knew I had failed and everybody I knew would be doomed. The only option to save them was to jump. Right as I hit the black circle at the bottom I woke up terrified. Pretty lame when I type it out really, but for some reason that black circle really scared me and having my only option be to go through it freaked me out.

Other than that I have had some that were more strange. Finding new rooms in my house I've never seen before filled with lots of old stuff including one room with shelf upon shelf of my old school lunchpacks from many years ago all moldy and cobwebby. And a similar one where we suddenly had a dark, delapidated swimming pool at the bottom of a staircase several hundred meters under the earth.

mmhh...when i was a child, i somewhen dreamed that mummies where chasing my through the house. Not sure how horrible it was at that timepoint, but i still remember it, so it was probably.

Last year or so i dreamed within a week twice that i killed a girl with whom i went to school, but different at both occassions. While this is not directly a nightmare, i've been pretty shocked afterwards.

I've never really had a dream that has literally terrified me for a long time, but my biggest fear is spiders and sometimes when I have a dream about large spiders or many spiders and I wake up too terrified to go back to bed. I have to get up and look through my sheets and in the corners of my room to make sure there aren't any spiders.

If it wasn't for seeing the movie Pontypool, I'd have to say being intentionally paralyzed and prepared for consumption by insectoids is quite unnerving. Having seen the movie, I can imagine something moreso.

A couple of weeks ago (only a few days after i started this thread) i managed to finally incorporate that old nightmare into a short story. It turned ok i think :)

In the story the narrator is in his room, trying to keep some notes in his textbook. It seems that he had just awaken from a horrible nightmare. In the nightmare his entire life from when he was 7 passed in front of him, but not only that, since the dream expanded into the future, years not yet (?) experienced. The narrator is sure that he is just a 10 year old, but in the dream he was in his early thirties.
The house is the same, since he had lived in it all his life. But when he went out of the room, in the dream (?) he saw a vision of the old nightmare with the animal heads towering above, and desperate to end the plight he went against his mother by hitting her (reading the threat "if you go against your mother again you will be destroyed, which in greek is the same as the phrase "(if you go against your mother again) all will end".
So now all must have ended, or has it? He is in his room, too worried to go out, since then he might see even the corpse of his mother.

I had probably the worst nightmare of my life (rather tame compared to other people's, though) back in October, and since that time, I've had dreams of being abused by women. Until this big nightmare I'm posting, I *never* had a single dream of being abused or manipulated by women. They didn't start until after this nightmare.

Apologies in advance for poor grammar and sentence structure; I typed it immediately after waking up, and am too lazy to fix it for the forum.

Dream starts out like a disaster movie. The volcano in Hawaii with the astronomical
observatories on top starts erupting, and the observatories have to be abandoned.

I evacuate to california, only to learn that a giant earthquake will strike, and cause
parts of the coast to slide northward hundreds of miles in just a few dozen seconds.
I see the event from space, and the california coast slides northward, causing a chain
reaction that causes other parts of the west USA coast to break off the mainland.
The original piece starts to spin, and sink into the earth and leave an enormous hole
in the seafloor a thousand miles across, and will thusly drain the earth's ocean.
I succeed in preventing the hole from being that large, and it is only a mile across instead.

Some dreamstuff happens, and I am at the east coast, and a dark, evil woman, who is
white, but with black hair and black clothing, is intent
on tormenting me and controlling me. I am trying to escape her. I visit dad who is in
california, before the quakes start, and I reach him, only to find that the evil woman
causes the quakes to start early, and the quakes wake up dad, and we huddle together
to avoid falling debris. At one point, I see a dark-skinned girl in sea-water, and she
gets stung by a jellyfish.

Somewhere along the way, dad disappears, and I see a vehicle with two people inside driving
by a townhome, ignoring an elderly couple they're supposed to pick up and help flee the
state and the quakes, but they pick me up, and we go to the east coast. the dark, evil
woman eventually finds me, and tells me she killed my dad. I give her the finger
and run away, and I find a nearby train to escape on, but everyone on it speaks a different
language.

I see the dark, evil woman again, and I give her the finger again as the train doors close
and the train moves. The train makes it to the midwest before evolving into an evil
amusement-park-style train/rollercoaster, that I've seen in previous dreams, and is owned
by the dark, evil woman in this dream. I escape, trying to find tracks that will lead me
home. Eventually, the tracks are electrified, and the dark, evil woman catches me, and
forces me to ride on one of her evil roller-coaster trains. I escape again, but fall in an
enclave while trying to avoid the electrified tracks. She catches me again, and puts me on
her rollercoaster train. This time, I somehow manage to make it go extremely fast, and it
crashes in slow-motion, flinging the evil woman in one direction, and me in another. I see
the border of the evil woman's amusement park, which is a highway guardrail holding up the
park, and I see townhomes beyond that will protect me.

I adjust my slow motion falling flight path so I fall right on the border, and I bounce off the ground,
over the border, and onto the ground below, that the evil woman can't walk on. I get up,
the evil woman see's me, and I run like hell, but still in slow motion, towards the townhomes
I am just a few yards away from the doors when I turn around, and I see the evil woman
flying towards me, in the form of a dark raven or dark eagle. I turn around again, but instead
of running straight towards the first door, I turn left towards another door, but the evil woman
catches up with me, and as she flies past me, I moan "no!" and wake up moaning in terror.
