Deadlocks in Debates

The irony being that those that complain about this the most have also contributed to it/fed into it many times in the OT themselves.

Suggesting that change isnt really going to change anything as long as ones own perception is 'its cool when I/you/my social group do/does it, but terribly unpopular when someone I dont like does it.

It's OK if you do it for the LOLs.

It takes 2 to tango anyway - all participants in this style of posting are equally annoying. Most of the time these people are from diametrically opposing viewpoints/political belief groups.

Is it only the centrists who complain about it?

Like I said, my hope is not that MobBoss will stop doing it, but that other people will stop engaging with him, because those engaging with him will get downvoted.

Punished? Wherever did you get the idea that you would be punished?

Isnt that the entire point of the up/down rating system? Reward posters you like, punish posters you dont like?

Is it only the centrists who complain about it?

Do you consider yourself a centrist? If so pardon me while I

And I remind you again, that almost wiithout exclusion, everyone complaining about this in this thread has done the very thing they complain about.

It was a rhetorical question.

I'm pretty centrist for Europe, however. Europe is a small place outside of America.

It's OK if you do it for the LOLs.

This is the irony I am referring to in this situation.

The belief that doing it is ok if you do it for the LOLs is why this isnt going to change, even with an up/down voting system.

Why?

Because you will get one clique that thinks they are justified and just doing it for the LOLs, and not getting downvoted by their groupmates, while downvoting those they dont see justified.

If your going to complain about it, then there simply isnt any justification for anyone doing it...LOLs or otherwise. Thats just simply hypocrisy and elitism right on its face.

I think up/downvotes is a ridiculous idea though...

Never said I was. I said thats a mods job.

What you think of him personally is irrelevant to the point I am making.

That is unless you simply want OT to be this big circle jerk of a clique, where those that dont fit your 'coolness' factor arent welcome.

Is that what you want?

Simply giving my read on the TOS. However, that is still up to mods to decide.

You mean like what you just posted? I agree.
:goodjob: of extending our parody of the dueling posts to one more round. I think it would be dangerous to try for another round.

Which is of course your right. But that doesn't alter the fact that I also have the right to post my style, my way, as long as it conforms to the TOS.

We wish to change the TOS so that this isn't the case.

This is not about your opinions or beliefs. Its not all about you either.

Isnt that the entire point of the up/down rating system? Reward posters you like, punish posters you dont like?
Only if you think that giving feedback on the quality of one's posting style is "punishment".

Or the walls of text where two people pick apart each other posts into a bunch of quotes and it gets into the little details instead of the post as a whole.

:smug: Whoda thought this thread would turn into a prime example!

Which is precisely the case here. I have seen every single one of the posters in this thread complaining about this issue do the very same exact thing they are complaining about, but yet its ok when they do it because they are in the majority here and they are justified when they do it.

When did I do this? Sometimes I pull part of a quote but not pick apart the entire thing.

I don't think I do that either.

Very rarely if I have (maybe a couple of times when responding to a complex point).

I certainly don't do wall of quotes ping-pong.

:goodjob: of extending our parody of the dueling posts to one more round. I think it would be dangerous to try for another round.

Mine wasnt parody.

We wish to change the TOS so that this isn't the case.

You would change the TOS so that certain post styles are against the TOS?

This is not about your opinions or beliefs. Its not all about you either.

Considering your above statement, and the content of this thread so far, it would seem you want to change the TOS to deny certain post styles....however, its a style I use.

How is this not about me given that particular fact? It may not be solely about me, but it would certainly be inclusive of me. Or at least it appears that way from the content of the thread.

Only if you think that giving feedback on the quality of one's posting style is "punishment".

What else is it supposed to be? I continue my point that the 'quality' of my posting could be exemplarary, full of fact, and eloquent all thoughout, and it could still get negative feedback simply because someone does like my politics/religion/hairstyle, etc. etc.

Quality is in the eye of the beholder, thus its quite subjective.

:smug: Whoda thought this thread would turn into a prime example!

Prime example? I dont see two posters going at it for page after page, do you?

When did I do this? Sometimes I pull part of a quote but not pick apart the entire thing.

You've never argued with someone on this forum 1 on 1?

I don't think I've ever seen aimee being argumentative.

Prime example? I dont see two posters going at it for page after page, do you?

The example was when you and Jolly both decided to pick apart each others post sentence by sentence. Aimee has spoken of her dislike to these types of posts before.

You would change the TOS so that certain post styles are against the TOS?

Some styles already are against the rules. Some people just can't resist a "style" that mocks or belittles other people... constantly.

Other "styles" consist of single-smiley posts.

Do you see what I mean?

What else is it supposed to be? I continue my point that the 'quality' of my posting could be exemplarary, full of fact, and eloquent all thoughout, and it could still get negative feedback simply because someone does like my politics/religion/hairstyle, etc. etc.

Don't be silly, MobBoss - we don't know what kind of hairstyle you have, so it would be absurd to give you any sort of feedback about it. ;)

I think it has been confirmed he has a ginger beard (now a bit peppery).

It seems like mods have been splitting off some of these OMC arguments into their own threads recently, which must be helpful for the discussion (and let's not forget: quite funny).

Otherwise the best solution is probably for everyone who is still interested in continuing the discussion to put the deadlocked posters on ignore for the duration of it, and then when the debate has run out of steam, take those posters off ignore (if they so choose). The ignore list doesn't have to be a permanent expression of pure loathing.

The example was when you and Jolly both decided to pick apart each others post sentence by sentence.

That is the most awful way to post. People who do that should be decanted into small jugs.
