Decade Awards Main Forum Discussion Thread

Where are polls posted?

They will be appearing momentarily (soon, like, soon dude) in the Anniversary Competitions Forum. While you're waiting, there's a new Nominations thread in the forum - this one is harder than the last, I think - and a Competition Splash & Icon design contest thread.

How about splitting up historical mods by periods as well? Ancient / Medieval / Industrial / Modern?

Seconded. And it would be nice for units as well. I know there was a time period where this was all discussed, but it's hardly too late if there's a month before the polls are even posted. Seems a shame that dozens of great scenarios and mods and thousands of units are crammed into three categories.

Thanks, Balthasar, for taking the lead and doing the work to make this competition happen.

It's hardly fair to everyone to make promises to everyone that depend on almost instantaneous moderator response. It states right in the faq to allow at least 24 hours before contacting a moderator to find out why action has not taken place. And posting a request to a single moderator rather than using the report function - all assigned moderators would see the request - is going to slow the process down even further.

Shouldn't the actual polls be in the main C&C forum for higher visibility? Speaking of higher visibility, posting the polls without giving moderators the heads-up means a delay in the front page announcements.

Just saying.

All good points. I'm glad you've got my back, Blue. I promise to be more timely next time.

The best reason to keep the polls in the Anniversary Competition Forum is because, well, we have our own forum, what else are we gonna do with it? It's our anniversary clubhouse for the summer. Another reason is that, because there are, and will be, so many polls out at the same time, it might be better to Corral them, rather than have them slip up and down the regular posting list. The Utilities Poll could slip off the page altogether...

Guys, I argued hard for more categories. Where were you all when I was looking for backup? In the end, it came out to logistics; eight polls per month were assumed to be plenty, and even then we have to stretch the contest across three months to get every chosen category in. If there's enough interest, though, in squeezing a few more categories in, we might run a nominations thread in September & polls in October. Meet me in the Categories thread to discuss what categories you'd still like to see.

Is there still one poll to come, the Best Tutorial is not up yet.

Now it is. Thanks for catching that Goldfool.

Which is excellent for the planning & nominations. OTOH aren't the polls meant to be open to the whole CFC community? If so why bury them?
Just learned about this today.

Stick Thread where? Don't answer that. :joke: Is that all the options the moderators get? I was looking for vaporize...okay, I'll stop..

(looking around nervously to see if anyone else is on my side..) Don't be sure it's so buried. The 2nd Nominations thread has had 60 views today, as I write this. In the short time the Polls were up, they've had 20 views..if I'm wrong, I'm not tragically wrong.

My best argument: there are currently 11 Stickies on the Forum's main page; if you stickied the Polls, the Nomination Thread, and the Design Contest thread, there would be 11 more. Alot.

How about One stickied Thread with a Bold Headline:
CIV 3 "BEST OF THE DECADE" POLLS NOW OPEN IN ANNIVERSARY COMPETITION FORUM!
....with one post with links to everything, including this thread. That might get some attention..

Yes, I'm behind you, Balthasar* but where would we post this? The Announcements forum? The forum front page (as is right and proper)? The main CivIII forum? A slight reminder at the OT hellholian moshpit?

(*) please ignore this absurdly sharp knife

Has this yet been mentioned on THE frontpage? It seems like something of this magnitude should get some site-wide coverage.

Did anyone notice that the suggestion to sticky was in in response to Balthasar's post about the polls? In other words the suggestion was to sticky the open polls.

The actual polls will be announced on the front page - with all CFC members encouraged to participate.

Making a thread (in the main C&C forum) with an op linking to the actual posts it would be simple enough to then make front page announcements linked to it as the various polls open. & stick it, of course.

Decide how you all want it done. Then it can be done without too much trouble.

EDIT: (x-post)

As you can see this is part of the concept. Somehow things moved from concept to execution without enough time/effort/participation in the planning stage. So now things are being done on the fly with minimal coordination.

I'm all in favor; Do It, I say! I submit my description of it from my previous post, amended as you see fit. Maybe different fonts in the Title to attract attention, if that's possible...

Aww, it's going alright. Good old seat-of-the-pants flying is what we do well where I come from. Keeps you flexible. We had a deadline and had to get this off the ground, so it's still being patched in-flight. Happens that way, sometimes. Let's concentrate now on keeping it up, and making a worthy spectacle of it!

As for coordination; we've had several threads for that. At the end of June, I put a plan on the table in those threads, based on what we'd all discussed, and had no response (nothing; crickets) for a week. As the July deadline approached to implement it, I jumped, stuck my neck out, and got it started with the first Nominations thread. Now its up and running, and it's decidedly not perfect, but it exists. I like it; the response has been slow to get started, but it's getting better, and we're still having discussions in the Categories thread about improving things for some folks. If you have an idea about improving coordination in the future, I'm all ears, but please don't just listen for the squeaks; try to sit back and enjoy the aerial view a bit.....um, do you need a paper bag?.....

I don´t think this "contest" is a good idea, as it is a kind of discrimination to all the wonderful work of modders that don´t win. In each category there can be only one winner (due to a handful of cranky votes) but hundreds of modders that don´t win so they did a marvellous job

Please stop it!

In my eyes there could be a much better way to celebrate the tenth birthday of Civ 3, for example creating a new main file for C3C.

I agree with you; that would be great. (How would we do such a thing?)

But, c'mon, this is a summer potato-sack race, not a job evaluation! Nobody should feel put-off because their creation wasn't considered or doesn't win. When we were trying to decide categories, at one point we had as many as fifty different categories for all of the different types of things that folks create around here. Put it this way: for every creation that makes it into a contest, there will surely be another, or five others, or ten more that could've taken its place. Remember that, and everyone can sit back and enjoy the sack race, and have a hot dog.

Don't forget that this is also part scavenger-hunt, too, as everyone searches for the unit or mod that they remember they liked....this will get everyone looking at all of the great work in the database, and I'll bet that everyone sees something that they'd forgotten about, or had forgotten to pick up. I found myself downloading stuff the other night, even as I was just tracking down the links from the nominations thread...

Do epic mods count as 'Historic Mod/Scenario'? Ones that cover multiple eras, and even into the future? Or is there another category for that that I'm missing?

Also, do 'silly' mods count as fantasy? eg Playground Mod
