hi!

this is my first post, though i play this mod from early releases.

i have an idea which i'm toying with a for a while, maybe it is interesting for ffh2 team or modmoders:

at some point of the game, a "decadence" event occurs. all players receive 90-95% negative research bonus per turn, so their research per turn is zero or negative.

when negative value reaches amount required for a tech, a random tech is lost. existing buildings and units requireing lost tech remain, but new ones cannot be built anymore. this way, champions or certain buildings may became rare and valuable commodities, if they are only few in existance

there is no technology trade during decadence.

since all players receive negative bonus, they all descend into barbarism or, with utmost effort, stagnate. large empires become more and more difficult to manage, etc.

decadence may be a random event, a scenario, startup option or something else

please tell me what do you think!

It could be an interesting scenario. I dont think it would be very fun for a random event. But if I was going to use it for a scenario I'd probably just have it be a dark ages medieval scenario or fall of rome scenario, I dont kknow that anything abotu the concept is particuarly "ffhish".

thanks for quick reply! maybe it's not very ffhish, but it may fit into fantasy settings

i suggested it here because i mainly play ffh2 now, and anyway i never thought of it outside of ffh...

In the vanilla Civ 4 manual, Soren Johnson wrote that the Golden Ages which originated in Civ 3 were originally conceived of as Dark Ages, to show the waxing and waning of an empire's power over time. But having a decline phase wasn't fun in game terms, so they "flipped the concept around," giving you 20 turns (in Civ 3) of increased productivity rather than 20 turns of decline.

So the idea's already in the game, sort of.

Ideas for 'dark age' events have been toyed around with for vanilla. You can enjoy all eras of the game (unlike advanced starts etc) but at random techs stagnate so you can all enjoy the dark ages for a while. The specific dynamics are hard to work out. WOuld it be like the stasis spell's tech freeze, or would techs beyond a certain point be inaccessible, or would costs simple quadruple for a certain era. Add in all the balance issues for each on your own...

I'm honestly not sure If I've only ever discussed this with myself, if there was ever a thread or if I heard it on polycast...

This might be interesting, perhaps as one of those "interesting choices".
Like, accept a Dark Age, when you come out of it your Golden Age GP count is reduced... need to go through Dark Age in order to research a "hurdle" tech... the sort of thing where is it a choice or an which isn't an automatic thing, but something you might decide you can afford to do, or have to do in order to avoid worse situation.

Maybe you mean something like this?:crazyeye:

A scenario that had you fighting off decline, except with actual mechanisms to help you along would be interesting, but if it was a random event, it would be easy for it to "ruin" a good game, simply because you got unlucky
