DEFCON - everybody dies

Navy is exceptionally important, it seems. Neglect the other persons military or submarines and you'll have a nuclear strike off your own shores!

Defcon 3 seems to be when the navy really comes into play, most of that time is spent in naval warfare.

Yeah, I played the ttorial and a match against what I THOUGHT was human, but I think might have been AI... or he didn't know how to chat (EDIT: He was human). This demo is fun. Though it's hard to use your navy when you're sout east asian and htey are the USSR. But it menat after he used most of his I still had one silo and half my fleet was off the coast of Europe!

God I am in love with this game. I've played about 10 games so far, watched probably 10 more, and each one is very different.

And I don't know what you mean about air strikes being weak, late game bomber cleanups are just a killing! Fighters also help shot down incoming navy

The real thing is that during Defcons 5 and 4 no real fighting can occur, naval fighting starts right after Defcon 3 is declared. And since the AI likes to move it's fleets around, this can cause messy battles. In a few of my games I simply surrounded the AI fleets with my own during Defcon 4 and then simply sprung the deadly trap on them once Defcom 3 started. My fleet barely took a scratch, while the enemy fleets were sunk completely.

I was in America :p How the heck could I hit Asia with an American airstrike?

But I'll try it agan later to see if I revoke my first impressions.

Reno: I agree, one of the bad points of the demo is that the one one one nature means it's easy to predict where the AI will put it's fleets. I look forward to a six player battle, or even a human one on one.

Tycoon: Bombers have pretty good range, especially from Alaska :D

I don't understand how to play this game. It makes no sense whatsoever... Help?
Nuclear war isnt never supposed to make sense. EVERBODY DIES!

I think Brian captured my main gripe with the game:
So DEFCON

The slogan is, "It's Global Thermonuclear War, and nobody wins."

What it should really be is, "It's Global Thermonuclear War, and Brian Clevinger never wins."

I like how the computer gets to protect every city on the planet with complete impunity using one missile defense silo that must have Superman at the controls while I've got ******* lobotomized starfish on missile command.

It needs more realism, but it's really fun.

Winner's strategy to win the nuclear war:

1) move your subs close to the enemy
2) use your surface fleets to protect your mainland, make use of your airbases to protect your navy
3) find and destroy enemy subs before they launch SLBM's (this is especially important, AI got me almost exclusively by sea-launched strikes)
4a) wait until they launch nukes from their silos and use your subs to take out those silos
4b) use the rest of your surface fleet to scout the enemy territory
5) launch massive nuclear strike against the enemy silos
6) when the enemy territory is left almost undefended, launch ICBM's and depopulate it :nuke:

BTW - place your silos close to each other, tit makes them more effective in shooting down enemy nukes. It will epose some parts of your territory, but if they want to waste nukes on it, it is their business ;)

Do you know the range of some American bombers like the B-52?

This cute little pic comes from Bunny

It makes for a great all day long office game. Set it to play in real time, and make sure your attacks are coordinated with your opponents stepping away from their desks.

Guess the site is crappy, it started loading for me with a HUMONGOUS 9kb speed! Stopped downloading, don't want to download 5 hours.
