Deirdra's picture

Should we change Deirdra's picture?

I'd say the chances are pretty null. Though one should be able to crank out such a module fast :)

I'm attempting to find the artist of the current pic used for Deirdra and contact them. I was told that the artist does not approve of having their art used, which is actually how/why I found this FFH (which seems weird to say... 'Yeah, I found about the Civ modding community through a thread about art thief on a watercolor board'). But that's a case of 'he said/she said'- someone who 'knows' the artist rather then the artist themselves. If the artist is who I believe they are, I believe they did other art in a similar style to the one used. They may have done one of a girl that might work better then the guy art being used, if they're cool with having art used. Although you guys seem pretty attached to the current art...

If an image is posted by the artist to a free public site like deviantart or anything similar, then anyone can take that image and do as they please with it as long as they aren't profiting from it. The artist's consent is given when they essentially give the image away to the public.

Ahem, it should be noted that as of right now there are 36 who agree with devs and 21 who like pie.

... and about 46 (at the time) who wanted a new picture. So changing the picture is the most popular option but the developers can do as they please regardless. What was your point?

-2axes... WTH?!? who would battle seriously with 2 axes save some Berserkir ? 2blades can sometime be understandable, but 2 axes is not believable.
.

Depends on the size of the axe. In the middle ages, it was fairly common to duel-wield hatchets.

Source?

Not trying to be an a**hole, it's just that it's the first time I've heard of that and, frankly speaking, dual-wielding axes of any size doesn't sound like a very clever idea.

@Calavente: that was a pic for Sheelba.
I disagree : see the original post :
O.K. ... back to deidra... sheelba can remain how "she" is, otherwise open a new thread. I liked the "androgyn" pic of deidra, but I like this one too:

http://fantasyartdesign.com/free-wallpapers/digital-art.php?i_i=1131&u_i=1023&count=1

bit more agressive, 100% women, no pants, and nice background... kind of fits to the wind mana affinity.

P.S.: I don't know how to show graphics, pics, etc. copy-paste doesn't work...
that comment "I like the (...) of Deidra but I like this one too :... " + " fits the wind mana affinity (as in... Austrin)" clearly shows that that pic was intended for Deidra.

I understand your statement but look at the size of the axes .... not made for double wielding :when using those you'll need a full body movement... thus you can't really alternate from one to the other + can't use the second for protection, a small blade or buclar would be better.

...No. Just, no. Have you even read deviantart's copyright policy (http://about.deviantart.com/policy/copyright/)? Or the USA copyright policy in general (Circular 40 might be a good place to start)? Unless the art has been deliberately placed in public domain, it cannot be used in a project like this without violating copyright unless permission has been given. Credit doesn't cut it, and modding doesn't fall under fair use. By law, any artist who finds their art being used in something like this can bring the case to civil court as a copyright violation and sue. In practice, no one's going to do that without first contacting the RiFE crew, administrators, server, etc etc etc. Probably won't do it anyway, as taking things to web-servers generally solves the problem.

People have been violating artist's copyright long before the internet even existed, and it's hard to get worked up about it unless it's your own artwork, I think. I mean, no one gives a hoot if you paste art of cars on your carwash sign (unless it's Disney-Pixar's Cars, in which you will be sued, because Disney Is Like That). But trying to claim that putting something on the internet makes it free to use (if only non-profit) is ridiculous. You even referenced deviantart in the post, who themselves completely contradict your claims.

...I still like the first pic Opera posted. Don't like at all the dual-wielding axe girl with hardly any clothes... poser-art would look pretty strange with the rest of the art used in the mod without some editing, anyway, I would think.

Eh... getting back on topic, I object that the current picture is "androgynous". There's nothing androgynous about it, that chick's hot. What, she can't wear an overcoat and have a sulky look without being accused of really being a dude? I like the current picture, I vote No.

i'd just like to point out

Being the cynic that I am, there is no "powerful women" or "weak men" explanation, men just enjoy it when women are half-naked. Especially if that woman is pretty.

@Tschuggi In this mod the devs don't want the stereotypical "chainmail bikini" fantasy woman; they want the female leader wearing things they actually would in reality.

Are you sure...? Seen the female svartalfar leader? And hey... isn't it "ironic" I took the picture which fulfills the most of all Klischees (searched 2 seconds on google for dark female portrait picture with boobs:lol: and the wind was a lucky austrin-fitting incident) and all of you reacted on it... kind of ridicoulos like nearly the whole thread here  com'on, xxx-pages just to discuss the picture of a leader when everybody is waiting for the release... oh man, we really have nothing else to do, everybody is watching the forum for THE moment. And, by the way, everything important was already said on page one and in the poll (also page 1;)). I like the "original" picture of Deidra. And I like Bikinis:mischief:a lot:scan:

And just to mention my question in the post before: I didn't understand IMO. Now I do.

Have you even read deviantart's copyright policy (http://about.deviantart.com/policy/copyright/

Deviantart starts off that page with an IANAL statement.

By law, any artist who finds their art being used in something like this can bring the case to civil court as a copyright violation and sue.

For damages. They can sue for damages. If the image is available for free on a public website then there are no damages. No damages means no lawsuit.

If you use the image to gain profit though, then they can sue you for those profits.

If "no" and "pie" are put together, they surpass "yes". Indifference could be an indication of present portraits acceptable condition that need not to change.

Well, not all pictures comes from DeviantArt.
And IIRC, it already happened somewhere in FfH forums that some artist contacted mod for removal of his images from thread

Indifference could also mean they don't care if it's changed if I want to manipulate it in my direction. The truth is Indifference means someone doesn't care one way or the other so their votes count for neither side.

We sure need 1.3 fast!!

that one was posted on the mahalla thread...
and IMO she looks like a :
-tough enough to be a lone wanderer,
-clearly female,
-good looking (that's always good to have something beautiful to look at)
-CLOTHED !
-with a .. Cloak .. as a true wanderer.
I'll upload the three appropriate images I had lying around. Will see if I can find something more later. To bad she's not an elf. Fantasy artists just love drawing elven females.
http://j.imagehost.org/0966/Test2.jpg
What's your opinion?
well, weapons look elvish... but the girl clearly is not

Good looking: Check
Sword: Check (Always need some sort of weapon in a world as dangerous as Erebus)
Wanderer: Check, obviously. She looks like a ranger.
Nature in the background: Check

There's even a scratch! She's been fighting!

Kinda militant looking, for a civ based purely on wandering, not exploring, which is more dangerous, but I like it.

Well, that is what the female Svart leader would be wearing realistically. She's a queen, stuck up in her palace, never seeing combat, IIRC. She's able to just sit there and look pretty, because when she's not making a decision about her empire, that's all she's doing.
