Deity Challenge #12 - The Celts on Pangaea

Update: Turn 242

Spoiler :
Well the game is all but won I think . I am very excited because this will be my first Deity Challenge win. I know it's an easy one, but it's a big win for me :goodjob:

Korea completed the apollo program about 50 turns ago but never managed to get to parts yet. I ended up catching up to him in Science quickly once I hit Plastics. Also Harald will literally go to war with anyone because he's a savage beast so I sent him out as my dog hunting down Korea and Rome While myself and Spain fought Greece.

I'm not sure what Harald is doing right now. He's ahead in points but he's behind in Science and Military. He might be playing with Rome and Babylon where I can't see.Funny thing I never actually found Babylon. I got barb trapped around turn 50 trying to get to him and never managed to get over there.

Since this is my first win and I'm pretty sure I've got it in the bag ( I could jump to a Science Victory fairly quickly) I'm going to have a little fun. I've never been able to use nukes before so I'm going to throw a few around before it's over. I don't really care what Turn I finish.

First deity win for me, fairly new player. Science victory on turn 296, I really just phoned it in after taking 3 of persia's cities at about turn 120. Spain was runaway after I had them kill Korea. This is a really easy deity map, you start with like 1/5 of the map to yourself for the most part.

Gonna try this again from scratch, got my feet wet with a random pangea std deity playing china and rampaged the continent with cho's. That was liberating. Thanks again Pilgrim and co for all the pro tips, and whoever posted that china game on youtube.

Is deity ai always going to take religions superfast ? i made a shrine, got a panth (had 6 silver mines between 3 bases) with a nice boost but was still unable to snag a religion. I guess this challenge is the exception to that rule with instant faith boost.

It depends on the AI's and their flavours. I've managed to found religion on turn 120 before on Deity; although I admit that was awfully rare (and in fact, accidental).

Yeah, same here. If I want a religion, which I often don't, I usually can get it. Being a religious civ and/or having faith boosting pantheon/SH/religious CS/NW allows to get one pretty consistently. The only question is whether it's worth the effort. If you're one of the last to found a religion, spreading it will be hard and you won't benefit much from it anyways because of that and due to lack of good beliefs to pick by the time you get it.

It's interesting that in your game Harald is this big. In mine he was a being bullied around by Augustus. Also in my game it was the first time I've seen Augustus going Autocracy.

I ignored writing - If you engage in a really early war, it's crucial to get army first. I went for CB tech first. When I saw that persia is close from me I decided to steal persian worker and get his cap at CB timing.

After scout monument cap built archers and 1-2 pitish warriors. Used free settler for uluru and built one (about t30 screenshot).
Ah, thanks for this. I thought ignoring early writing would hurt badly, especially on higher difficulty.
Did you manage to keep on par with the AI techs? When i tried something similar (early war and ignore early writing) on immortal, i was badly out-teched by the industrial era so when the AI finally had flight, it was sort of game over for me (no way to fight against great war bombers when you have cannons, cavalry and riflemen) :(

Define early Writing. As long as you're able to complete NC before turn 100 (I'd recommend before 90 with 4+ cities), you should be fine. Definitely on immortal as well as on this particular deity map. I finished NC on ~92-93, despite Liberty, but by that time I had 5 cities including Persepolis and Seville and settled 3 more immediately after. Raw population makes up for delayed Writing. If you play defensively, i.e. stay at 1 city for a long time, your science will take much bigger hit unless you whip up NC really quickly.
And overall the idea of keeping up with AI tech-wise is flawed. You can't keep up because initially you start behind. You can only catch up. Usually by late Renaissance-Industrial. Or never. :)

Damn, others are probably playing the next one before I'll finish this - starting might actually help but I've been too busy with restarting Hattrick after several years of absence but based on post count I assume at least few have already won this one. I clearly need more hours on a day.

Please share if you find some. :)

Absolutely but I'm not too hopeful to be successful in endeavours pursuing such circumtances. However, I do smell a commercial potential here so I may also get a patent for my findings.

well if you have close neighbor and have to fight him early (DoW from your side or from his side) I think you should get units first (so no time for library hence no need for the tech). Also, having library at cap with pop 4 adds 2 spt. building one more city and growing it to pop 2 gives the same result.

After taking persia cap, I would start build library and NC and start war with other civ. If you can manage wars effectively, taking other cities will ultimately help you in every aspect - gold, sci, etc. You will catch techs up by late renaissance or early industrial era. Even if you cannot, it won't be (or shouldn't be) far away.

if you plan to play defensively until knights-Xbows or cavalry-artillery timing, then you want to go tradition and build NC fast, but it's different story.

You'll be a very very rich man, no doubt. :D

Where is DC 13? :P
Go sit in the corner! :D

I have an idea for the next challenge, but I won't make any before I finish this one. Hopefully tomorrow.

Yes please no more right now, I want to finish this one :)

I second this in more general way, too. The challenges lose their meaning if peeps don't have time to play them through. Something like a DC per week or 2 in 3 weeks seems appropriate but I'm already sitting in a corner looking for more time so I can be ignored with ease.

Motivation takes a hit as well, to be honest, if all you're doing is trying to catch up and by the time you finish one challenge, everybody else is 2 challenges ahead.

True, and I came late into these so I have few earlier ones to play if I get bored or have some extra time both of which are unlikely. But as I started this one I feel somewhat obligated to play this through in reasonable time frame even though it wasn't really my initiative.

Lately I've amused myself with Light Cleric's China LP. Watching others playing is even less stressful than cruising eyes closed through a game of one's own. Keep'em coming LC but if the next one is with Spain we'll have to take a closer look whether he might be reincarnated El Cid after all.

I'm interested in seeing Pilgrim's idea, he has very good ones!

Oh geez, that made me laugh harder than it probably should have And thanks! Although I probably won't do Spain, they can be very silly sometimes. Considering Persia or Byzantium atm, although the strategies I have planned for each I have never tested before so it might be a disaster

I definitely agree we should keep them at a slower pace. I took a slight bit of a break a while ago and ended up having #1 unfinished on like t130, #2 nearly done and never got to touch #3 & 4 before #5 came up. Lost that one to insane runaway t140 Modern Hiawatha(I may give it another shot), skipped #6 because I loathe water maps. I finally got into #7 and beat it but #8 came quickly after that, and that was an EXTREMELY time-consuming map; so time-consuming, in fact, that I was too bored to even try to finish it even though I still had (maybe :p) a 50/50 shot. Just came way, way too fast for my taste.
