Democratic Succesion Game

Lurker Comment:
My pic-based fog-gazing indicates that there is land, possibly flat plains, to the northeast of that sheep on the plains-hill.

That would be nice, as then we wouldn't have to settle on the sheep. I hope you're correct.

lurker's comment: I also think Rashi is correct. The land kind of extends out at the NE corner. Compared to the other sides where it angles down into the water. Not sure if its flat, though. :dunno:

Some screenshots for the people who are working on their patching perhaps? :p

I think Delhi should work on the Great Lighthouse (some way to increase production by changing tiles perhaps?) while the other cities supply workers, axes and settlers.
Our workers should improve resource tiles near our cities, and when that's done, they should help Delhi build the Great Lighthouse.
No enemy borders sighted yet?

My first set of screenshots shows the same information as my screenshots would have shown at the end of my turn. Our woodsman fought a brave battle against a Barbarian Archer...but sadly, though he had been on a forest square, accross a river from the Barbarian Archer...he still succumb...the battle must have been glorious! I hope it was close, since his combat strength should have been over 4, but saddly with the Archer's first strike bonus, it was probably only 4.4 vs. 3.3, so probably only a 60% chance of surviving???

Anyway, that wrecked our exploration efforts with the Woodsman, and the culture pops from Bombay and Vija failed to bring sight to new terrain. One of the warriors is leaving Bombay to explore to the West along the shore line.

However, no sighting of enemy culture borders.

I agree with you by the way concerning the actions of the other cities though :)

Ctrl + Tab gives you the log screen, I think the combat odds are displayed there (on one of the tabs).

I really hated losing that woodsman...

Yes, I have time to play today.

Spoiler log :

Turn 69 1240 BC
Tweaked Delhi to get one more hammer
IBT - Great Wall BIFAL

Turn 70 1200 BC
GL down to 13 turns on Delhi growth
Bombay works the gold, lowering math to 15

Turn 72 1120 BC
Gold connected, citizens are happy
IBT - Stonehenge BIFAL

Turn 74 1040 BC
A wounded barbarian archer unwisely attacks our
exploring warrior. Revenge is sweet.

Turn 75 1000 BC
Borders sighted for Qin
IBT Mali found Islam and convert
OB with Mansa Musa

Turn 76 975 BC
Bombay finishes axeman, resumes library
Insert another axeman, we're kinda weak
We have good espionage vs Qin, so set as 1 for the rest

Pics to be added after I reset connections on all the computers in the house. Hate it when Comcast glitches.
Qin is to the NW, Mansa Musa is to the NE. The sheep across the water may be on a penninsula vs. an island given Mali's location.

I think Ivory city looks good for the next city, as it'll grab us some more land. It will need an axeman for protection though, since it's in the middle of the barbarian territory. I think we should specialize it as a production city.

On the western coast, there's a nice potential corn, cow, wine site.
In the east, there's a nice site 2N of the Sugar, it has sugar, rice, bananas and 3 spices. It will also block Mansa.

TGL in 3? I think we should keep building workers, settlers and axes to expand north, so we can backfill our own peninsula later.

Sorry for stating the obvious, but controlling that "Barbarian" land is going to be crucial to our success, as it would seem to be the "space" (soccer term) that we need to control. Everyone is situated around it, and it's full of resources! This may be one of the easiest Monarch games in history, if we can effectively control those resources and pin our oponents near their starting locations. Defending it, however...could be tricky. We may even want to adopt a strategy of controlling the space, but razing the oponent's cities, then slowly expanding into their holdings as our economy dictates.

I have another crazy thought, Horseback Riding -> Construction, then War Elephants and Catapults to support previous statement. Thoughts?

Indeed, claiming land is the most important thing right now.

However, if we can claim enough land, we could rush towards Liberalism + Military Tradition (or Rifling or Military Science) and beat our opponents with superior weapons, instead of a long drawn out war with Elephants.

I haven't looked at the save yet, so I don't know how we're doing economy wise, so take my statements with that in mind.

I'm hesitant to agree with going after the elephant city next as I worry our economy can't support it. Yet it appears the majority of the team concurs with it, therefore I will plan my strategy around settling the ivory.

I'll probably play tomorrow morning, as I'm not sure I'll have the time today, so please post more thoughts. Need to go check the save.

Heya! Don't break our back, but I've been experimenting lately with REXing to the point where my research goes to 20-40% range. I've found that I'm able to do this and still stay ahead in tech as long as I emphasize early construction of libraries and focus on wonders that boost my research per specialist and aggressively trade with the AI. Obviously, you don't want to do this forever, but it's not as bad as you might think.

Now, going for the ivory, IMHO, should mean that we need code of laws ASAP. Your thoughts? Also cottages will help emmensely.

Currency over Code of Laws any time of the day.

Regarding over-expanding: There's only a small window to claim land easily, after that you'll have to fight for it very hard. There's a huge window to repair economic damage.

Very true!

I think it's also importat to identify who our most important opponent will be, so we can try to block that civ.

I vote for Qin! I hate him with a passion! (I sometimes love playing as Qin, but he's always a thorn in my side when he is one of my opponents.) He's industrious and Protective, meaning he competes for wonders, and his cities are a hard nut to crack, also means (ironically) that he knows he doesn't need allot of units in his cities, and so he ends up sending a bunch of them toward a nearby neighbor.
