Did fantastical beasts like the unicorn and phoenix use to exist?

In the Revelations of Saint Bridget Jesus makes a lot of references to fantastical beasts, among them the phoenix and the basilisk. Now, Jesus wouldn't go talking about stuff that didn't exist, would he? He's definitely no daydreamer or espouser of men's overactive imaginations. It makes me wonder if they used to exist back in the days of Ancient Egypt, or perhaps even earlier - the ice age!

Let's just say that a man who still manages to find likelihood in such mythical creatures has a quality which has something to envy. I miss the wonders children's eyes could see.

Oh, I'm no immature fool. I've always disbelieved that such creatures could exist until I read the Revelations of Saint Bridget. Take the phoenix - it's supposed to be deathless. How under those circumstances could they go extinct?

Unicorns and phoenixes and the like started to disappear after the Bearers of the Three Rings left the Grey Havens for Valinor. By the end of the Fourth Age, all had either gone extinct or followed the Elves into the West, though a few holdouts may still lurk in the depths of lochs, under the eaves of cathedrals, or at cosplay conventions.

MY theory is that they existed in the time of Adam and Eve, a theory not helped by the fact that no bones of such creatures has ever been found.

My personal theory, backed up by I'm sure something, is that Adam was a unicorn and Eve was a duocorn. Then Adam got annoyed that she had two horns and he only had one, so they were kicked out of the garden of eden by the phoenix and lost their horns.

Sorry Warpy but this time you're wrong :p . The Bible says that women were created for men so Eve could not have been superior to Adam. You did give me a good laugh though, thanks for that

Narwhals are clearly the source of unicorn horns and the horse like critter just a stand-in from ignorance, so there is no need for an antediluvian version of the beast.

We know that unicorns once existed (perhaps they still do) because they are mentioned many times in the Bible. For example:

Isaiah 34:7 And the unicorns shall come down with them, and the bullocks with the bulls; and their land shall be soaked with blood, and their dust made fat with fatness.
