I would like to start a new sidebar thread about the 2020 cycle and beyond which I'm starting with it focused on the US but would love to see other examples. This thread will focus on misinformation campaigns in the political sphere.

This is expected to be the worst and most blatant misinformation campaign ever waged on the American voting population. We saw a similar campaign over brexit with some crossover on supporting actors. This article really caught my attention though. . .Its hard to pick out the section of this story that will get you guys to actually read it but I think you all should read the whole thing. So share pieces of misinformation that gt sent to you and lets dissect the lies together occasionally.

Through it all, the strategist has continued to show a preference for narrative over truth. Last May, Parscale regaled a crowd of donors and activists in Miami with the story of his ascent. When a ProPublica reporter confronted him about the many misleading details in his account, he shrugged off the fact-check. “When I give a speech, I tell it like a story,” he said. “My story is my story.”

DISINFORMATION ARCHITECTURE
In his book This Is Not Propaganda, Peter Pomerantsev, a researcher at the London School of Economics, writes about a young Filipino political consultant he calls “P.” In college, P had studied the “Little Albert experiment,” in which scientists conditioned a young child to fear furry animals by exposing him to loud noises every time he encountered a white lab rat. The experiment gave P an idea. He created a series of Facebook groups for Filipinos to discuss what was going on in their communities. Once the groups got big enough—about 100,000 members—he began posting local crime stories, and instructed his employees to leave comments falsely tying the grisly headlines to drug cartels. The pages lit up with frightened chatter. Rumors swirled; conspiracy theories metastasized. To many, all crimes became drug crimes.

Unbeknownst to their members, the Facebook groups were designed to boost Rodrigo Duterte, then a long-shot presidential candidate running on a pledge to brutally crack down on drug criminals. (Duterte once boasted that, as mayor of Davao City, he rode through the streets on his motorcycle and personally executed drug dealers.) P’s experiment was one plank in a larger “disinformation architecture”—which also included social-media influencers paid to mock opposing candidates, and mercenary trolls working out of former call centers—that experts say aided Duterte’s rise to power. Since assuming office in 2016, Duterte has reportedly ramped up these efforts while presiding over thousands of extrajudicial killings.
The campaign in the Philippines was emblematic of an emerging propaganda playbook, one that uses new tools for the age-old ends of autocracy. The Kremlin has long been an innovator in this area. (A 2011 manual for Russian civil servants favorably compared their methods of disinformation to “an invisible radiation” that takes effect while “the population doesn’t even feel it is being acted upon.”) But with the technological advances of the past decade, and the global proliferation of smartphones, governments around the world have found success deploying Kremlin-honed techniques against their own people.

Obama is a secret Muslim born in Kenya /s
Its pretty standard GOP MO at this stage, this year though I expect an increase in craziness as Trump tries to get re-elected.

Clinton’s Republican rival, Donald Trump, has falsely accused her campaign of starting the “birther” movement, and while the former secretary of state has never publicly questioned Obama’s citizenship, some of her staff members did question Obama’s background during the 2008 Democratic primary fight.

Penn’s memo in March 2007, while not raising the issue of Obama’s citizenship, did identify Obama’s “lack of American roots” as something that “could hold him back.” Reggie Love, the longtime traveling aide to Obama, wrote in his book that Clinton and Obama had a heated conversation about the notion that Clinton supporters were sending emails saying that he was a Muslim.

Yes I'm just expecting the scale of it to be quite exceptional this round, since the GOP has decided they do not need to try to get more voters jsut motivate their base as much as possible and they;ve learned the best way to do that is to cast "Berzerk" on them.

/Points at the post below.

Yes Clinton supporters did start this ignorant rumor and Clinton members did try to use his global roots against him. Notably it didn;t work and also notably she didn't keep harping on it ten years later. I'm pretty sure Trump still wants that birth certificate?

But then TRUTH and FACTS have a Liberal Bias.

Did Clinton Supporters Start the ‘Birther’ Movement?
False
Though it’s true that the specific allegation that Obama wasn’t born in the U.S. first reared its head during the 2008 presidential race, rumblings about Obama’s “otherness” had been percolating since long before that.
2006 by conservative columnist Debbie Schlussel, who published an article entitled “Barack Hussein Obama: Once a Muslim, Always a Muslim,” which stated that “Obama has a ‘born-again’ affinity for the nation of his Muslim father, Kenya.”

well see that blew two misconceptions I had about this story. One that Clinton supporters started it, clearly they did not and two that trump still believed it. I guess he finally conceded?

I’ve already learned stuff here

I'm just here pointing at Pharisees

So you didn't take 3 secs to find out people in Hillary's campaign were pushing Obama the Muslim? McCain corrected that misnomer when a female supporter called him a Muslim, I wonder where she got that idea.

Its amazing the cognitive dissonance
For YEARS Republicans ran with Birthism before it was picked up by Clinton supporters whom forwarded a Republican Email, and then by Trump.

A Short History of Trump's Birtherism (And How The GOP Reacted)
An entire cottage industry of “birthers” sprang up, complete with elaborate attempts to document the “evidence” that Obama was, in fact, a secret Kenyan. Arguably, Donald Trump launched his successful presidential bid by seizing upon the issue, which he milked for the maximum amount of publicity. But despite repeated attempts to debunk the theory, many leading Republicans either stayed silent or refused to forcefully denounce the theories that were springing up. One reason for their reluctance was that “birtherism” was not fringe notion in the GOP. A Public Policy Poll in February of 2011 found that birthers had become a majority among likely Republican primary voters -- 51% said they did not think Barack Obama was born in the United States. Less than a third of GOP voters -- 28 percent – said they firmly believed that he was born here, while 21 percent weren’t sure.
As late as 2014, Trump invited hackers to “please hack Obama’s college records (destroyed?) and check ‘place of birth.’”

Your article doesn't say Republicans ran with it for years before the Clinton campaign and McCain didn't run with it. But so what if they did? How does that exonerate the Democrats? If you're looking for a break in the logic chain, there it is. Maybe Trump learned it from the Clintons, he was probably hanging out with them.

Because the Democrats would never engage in misinformation campaigns right? Only those evil, subhuman monsters in the Republican party would do such a dastardly thing.

Kane might be manipulating them.

As long as you play the game, where two (or more) exceedingly democratic candidates burn vast amounts of money on their ad campaigns, the song will remain the same.

It’s the past record, past merit in the field that should define person’s eligibilty for high office. Not the money, connections. But this is highly undemocratic, borderline common sense and can turn you into a communist overnight. Most dangerous thing is that it can actually spawn candidates, who are really good at what they do. So, forget it.

Monsters in Republican party and Russian trolls. Those are the ones who do bad things.

Oh no that's not my point at all good hypocrite. Read the bloody article.

Scale matters of course but no neither side is totally innocent, but like most other things while democrats might practice something like corruption republicans have become the essence of said corruption. This includes this totalitarian tactic of misinformation through constant lie screaming.

As a Russian you should be more self aware of Soviet and post Soviet misinformation campaigns. It is of course telling that your cynicism skews your opinions in one constant direction. . . Another one who has read nothing of the article linked as well though.

Or he just gets suck of people dumping on Russia.

Red_Elk has a sense of humor. He knows what the deal is with his government.

Blaming Russians though had got to absurd levels. Things you need to do in America.

1. Run better candidates. Hilary was terrible.

2. Make better beer, the Russians are beating you.

Aussies beat you at wine and the British at whiskey.

Priorities!!!

No. Blaming Russia has not gone far enough. Their corruption of the entire planet is palpable for just about every citizen on the planet. Their misinformation campaigns have hit heights not dreamed of before. Yes something needs to be done about it, but atm they literally have a patsy (at least a patsy) as US President. This is kleptocracy on a global scale. If we don't fight back now we will all be burning I have a feeling in a generation.

I do not consider any part of this funny, so you can take you jokes elsewhere.
