Disney buy Lucasfilm, Episode VII for 2015

Pretty sure that has been thuroughly debunked. But I can't look for a link at the moment.

Well, despite my being a proud Star Wars nerd, let me say that I don't expect the new movies to be EU nerdgasms, nor would I want them to be. But I do think it's possible to make a movie with good taste, and with respect for what made a franchise great. If they go for a "back to basics" approach, rather than continuing the trend of the prequel trilogy, then they might not do so badly.

It is also quite possible that many of the films will be side stories not part of the main arc (set before or alongside the main series). And be made concurrently. It is a fair number of movies and some will be total disasters, but there will likely be some good ones too.

Certainly. It's going to be a very interesting next decade for Star Wars fans, to see where this whole thing goes. It may completely flop after VII, and they abandon the whole thing. Or maybe it winds up working and they tap into something good. Or maybe it's some of both. If it came out like the Star Trek reboot in 2009, I wouldn't be disappointed.

I don't know about you, but I got the sense that they were talking much more longterm than just VII VIII and IX. I heard "we paid an assload of money for the Star Wars franchise (and everything else associated with Lucasarts) and we're going to milk this thayng for all it's worth.

Not that that's a bad thing. More Star Wars films is still more Star Wars films. I'm just saying, to pretend this wasn't a cash-in on the part of Disney would be disingenuous at best.

Naturally. It was a business transaction, and they are in it to make money. I don't doubt for a second that Disney was after more than collecting a franchise for ego's sake. But there's cookie-cutter, and there's franchise history. Again, I don't expect EU nerdgasm extravaganza, but there are many bad things they could do to the new movies that I would prefer they not do (many of them involve emulating the prequels in some way, shape, or form).

I am betting the EU gets butchered by the new movies. And, to be honest, I hope it does. Having all that material restrict what they can do with the films cannot turn out well. Take ideas from it, yes, but don't be constrained by it. Some constraints are always a good thing, but the amount of EU stuff out there is just too much and anything they do will contradict something. Just make a good movie in line with the earlier films. Plus, the vast majority of the audience doesn't know or care about the EU, and most of those that do will fork over their money anyways.

As for Disney monetizing the franchise, making more movies is the one option that Lucas wasn't milking for all it was worth. And that quite possibly was considered (by Lucas) as the better way to add more value to the franchise as the merchandise and spin-offs fly off the shelves without more movies and most with a tiny fraction of the investment that a new movie would require. Plus it builds anticipation for when the next film does get made (and it certainly was going to get made, even if it were over Lucas' own dead body).

will the new ones be dark and gritty ?

For some reason I doubt it. Lucas is basically Obi Wan incarnate to Abrams so I doubt he goes away from the cheesy space-opera style.

Works for me.

To be fair, there's fairly large gaps in the EU: notably, between the Old and New Sith Wars, and between about 15 years after the end of the Yuuzhan Vong war and the Legacy era. As much as I'd like to see the former, the latter will be more likely to happen, especially cause you could still have (really old) Luke, Leia, and Han. (although no Chewie)

I actually would rather have the gaps filled in than to uproot the entire EU altogether.

Of course they will have to give some explanation as to what happened in that gap between VI and VII (my guess, animated series so they don't have to recast will be made but it will need to be done for most of the audience just using the opening crawl and some dialogue or, god forbid, flashbacks) and the longer the gap and the more significant the events the more difficult it will be to do.

I admit I don't know too much about the EU, never been too into the franchise and mostly through conmputer games. Maybe you can, but I doubt they will care if the retcon anything and hope that they don't and to hell with any details.

I would love to see what the Ewoks looked like in a Nolan-directed remake.

"Our is tribe small, but there's a lot of potential for 'aggressive' expansion! So...which one of you fine stormtroopers would like to join our team? Oh, there's only one spot open right now, so we're gonna have..Tryouts! Yub Yub!"

He'll stand around for a scene or two and grumble about his age.

What does EU stand for ? (prolly not Europa Universalis i guess ^^)

For the rest, i'll wait to see when it comes out to give my opinion, it's still two years and i have other stuff to worry about in the meantime :)

expanded universe. all those crappy books, basically.

unfortunately the Clone Wars seem to be similarly effected . On Sunday ı saw Darth Maul back , his upper half mounted on a spider and ı do really "abhor" the Night Witches and their magic , considering the Force came out as the stand in for magical stuff in the first place . Must be Lucas laying the groundwork for the disasters that can come out from Disney .
