DMI VII - Celebrity Deathmatch

lurking rules-lawyer question: do you get points for every caravel killed? if so, the BtS team can get a major lead if they use privateers. or so i heard, i never use 'em of course :mischief:. but i'm sure y'all will try to behave on the high seas *giggle*.

i had over 250 on my kill count in one game where i never did go to war, it was ridiculously fun

We finally have a full roster :) . Thanks everyone for playing !

Team Warlords passed the 500 BC mark. I'll come up with a write-up tomorrow. :)

Completely forgot that we already passed the 500 BC mark a while ago....
will post something tomorrow ( had a really bad day.... I would like that people explained me why there still so much Xmas gifts being sent through mail in the 27th December.... :crazyeye: )

The 500 BC report, Team Warlords

As SG captain of the illustrious Warlords Team I've the pleasure and honour to write up our first stages into the game. Unfortunately we hadc two "casualties" already, shyuhe didn't realize he was actually part of the team ( ) and Lucky1972 has issues with getting his Steam Version of Warlords upgraded to 2.13. So we're down to 4 players now, but still we managed to plod along at the pace of the other teams. Now to the game !

Game Plan

As a Club Chess Player, I know it's better to have a bad plan than none at all. So we made some brainstorming on how to approach the setup. I kept quiet in most of that discussion as my pre-knowledge of the map would be a bit unfair. Still we had a consensus soon on the location of our capital and the general game approach. We decided to play it peacefully at the beginning - wonder-hogging is actually a nice alternative to the usual rush with this scoring system. And indeed that was a deliberate goal in designing it. We concentrated on the Pyramids, as the Oracle falls early most of the times on Warlords too.

The Capital

We settled 1S of the initial spot. I think that will be a very common move as it gives more food to work those hills.

Civ4ScreenShot0005-11.jpg

Early Teching

We started with Agriculture for the Rice, followed by BW. After BW followed Pottery, AH, Masonry and the Wheel. All classic worker techs, so nothing special.

The 2nd city

We wanted to both utilize the copper as quick as possible and prevent Hatty from settling west. After some discussion we had the spot for St. Petersburg (you can also our scouting efforts by 1920 BC on that shot):

The 3rd city

Novgorod was especially chosen to seal up the backyard west for settling later on. Other than that it is a good spot too:

It's a wonderful world

The AI is kind of obsessed with the Oracle and grabs it ultra early. Our game was no difference:

Still we managed to achieve a grand point on our gameplan checklist:

The future

Here is a dotmap I made (as of now - which is 375 BC - dot A is already settled):

We'll stay on the peaceful side of life and start settling our western lands soon. Things look nicely so far, war is planned later though - we'll use those Trebuchets to full extent  .

In the beginning there was Moscow.

Well actually in the beginning was much discussion about where to settle and how to actually play this game.

There was no real consensus on a starting spot but a slight preference to move the settler 1S for Moscow.

However, there was a bit more consensus about our plan for the game. There was no real support for milking the score, or even playing for maximum points but there was much support for trying to get as early a domination win as possible. We have three things to use to help us along, Peter, Russia and Vanilla.

Vanilla has the funny situation that if you avoid researching Masonry, you can bulb Civil Service from a Great Prophet and Nationalism from a Great Artist. So our plan was to build an early Oracle for Code of Laws, use the resulting Great Prophet to bulb Civil Service and head research towards Music (which is required for Cossacks) as quickly as possible to get the free Great Artist to bulb Nationalism.

Russia has, of course, the mighty (Vanilla un-nerfed) Cossack, strength 18, +50% vs mounted units, the greatest unit in Civ IV history.

Peter has the Philosophical trait and as we are intending to bulb many techs (Civil Service, Education and Philosophy), this will be handy.

There was similar indecision as to the site of our second city but this was the result.

At this stage Hatty started REXing in our direction pretty heavily and she would eventually beat us to 2 of our intended city sites.

The Oracle was completed for Code of Laws.

A third city was built getting use of the 6 food grassed floodplain

And a fourth city was put north of St Petersburg to grab the seafood.

We only learned Animal Husbandry after getting it in a trade after Alphabet was researched and discovered that there are no nearby horsies. Hatty has already beaten us to the nearest, so we are hoping to grab the ones to the west.

Around 500BC we got our Great Prophet and bulbed Civil Service and immediately revolted to Bureaucracy.

The plan, an early AP victory, leaving those without the option in our very dust!

First the captial settled one south. I’d show you all a picture, but I think you can imagine it if you try really hard :p

Step one, Pawelo’s patented Oracle to Civil Service even though we have to get both math and Code of Laws:

Turn 7: Buddhism is FIADL
Turn 10: Hinduism is FIADL
Turn 33: Judaism is FIADL
Turn 61

No respect, I tell you.

Step two, Hatty must die! So we obtained some bright shiny stuff to go smash smash with:

5warandcopper.jpg

Unfortunately, what was actually interesting about that screenshot was the abundance of black flag warriors. There was an archer off-screen as well. Speaking strictly of military units, there were more black flags than orange ones.

No problem, copper is hooked up. We’ll place warriors in sound defensive positions and rush attackers to the rescue!

battleodds.jpg

For those taking notes, that’s two defensive losses at 79% odds, and an offensive loss at 99.1. Our cities were saved, at the expense of a sacrificed worker, and a belated buildup for Hatty was begun.

NO respect, I tell you.

In other news:

Turn 53: A distant civilization has circumnavigated the globe! (Immy claims not to be playing games with us. Sure, Mr. Grassland Flood Plain on a River. :) )

Did I mention NO RESPECT?

So as of 500 B.C. the preparations for war are made, and we are preparing to launch a somewhat late offensive against Hatty.

We will compare the games at 500 BC, 1 AD, 800 AD, 1500 AD and 1800 AD (should the games last so long, which I doubt). I beg the SG Captains to write a short summary once they hit the time marks with focus on overall team strategy, research paths, etc. Should be a nice thing to see those comparisons.

Where were we then?

That's right, Civil Service around 500BC. Sweet! :goodjob:

So what did we do between here and 1AD. Well as its about 20 turns, not much.

We debated about hacking on Hatty and in the end decided to stay the course and only war with Cossacks. This meant, of course, securing a source of horses. We decided on this one.

It wasn't settled by 1AD.

We also put up many confusing signs.

The Great Library was started as well.

Tech wise, we headed towards Music to get the free Great Artist, which we intend to use on bulbing Nationalism.

Actually, our tech plan after Alphabet was pretty tight. Literature, Music, Paper, Education (bulb GS), Philosophy (bulb GS), Nationalism (bulb GA), Liberalism, Military Tradition (from lib) and Gunpowder was all we intended on researching.

Just avoid Masonry and we're sweet. :king:

The main priority coming out of the last stage was to grab our supply of horse flesh. This is accomplished.

We were building Great Library. This is finished.

You'll notice Hatty has REXed all over us but that's OK, only means more food for the cossacks.

By 800AD we had researched Music and Paper, we had our two Great Scientists bulb Education and Philosophy, our Great Artist ready to bulb Nationalism, all we had to do was trade for Monarchy to clear the way for the Nationalism bulb. This was done.

Ma... so... :nono: nr... [pissed] y... :ar15: :suicide: :deadhorse:

We'll have to get back to you for a new plan

Team Warlords, up to 1AD

Well, basically we were told that we suck. Which might prove true in the end, who knows :D . At any rate it's a little bit too early to decide that in BC times...

Civ4ScreenShot0000-24.jpg

We founded Yaroslavl' to grab the Iron and the Stone (although we had the 'mids before that already).

Civ4ScreenShot0001-23.jpg

The religious situation made us thinking. As we ran out of things to build we ordered up troops - with Hatty as our soon-to-be target...

Civ4ScreenShot0004-20.jpg

Team Warlords up to 800 AD

Here is the Tech situation at 150 AD. We lack some apparently... ;)

tradeoppsmi2.jpg

Then the Fox played Tech Whore and got us some new stuff...

DM7-AD0150-trades.jpg

We used a GE to rush the Great Library...

DM7-AD0275-TGLibrary.jpg

The tech situation just before 800 AD. we still lack some essential techs...

...which was somewhat cured by myself...

We declared finally on Hatty...

...and captured a city...

97552439tf8.jpg

Our goal was to annihilate Hatty and then see how the game will pan out...

Well the accidental trading for Masonry meant we couldn't bulb Nationalism from our Great Artist, so we had to slightly change our plans.

We would need to self research Nationalism and we decided to trade for Monotheism and Drama so we could bulb Theology with the Great Artist.

We then researched Liberalism, taking Military Tradition.

Gunpowder was our last tech required for Cossacks and the minute this was researched our production changed slightly.

Around this time, we noticed a member from another team snooping around our game.

Now, Ralph had gotten somewhat of a name in recent sucession games our team have played as a navy builder. Essentially, we would neglect the navy and every time Ralph's turn came around, he would whip out a nice looking navy for us to destroy before the cycle came around again. From the view of the map we had, it was obvious it was a ring-pangea type map, so navy wasn't going to play a big part, so Ralph took charge the turn after Gunpowder came in and concoted the following two armies.

The keener among you will notice that in the latest patch, Cossacks have been nerfed from strength 18 to 15  . Our plan was to attack as follows.

In 1440AD, war was declared.

By 1500AD, we had achieved the following victories.

We did lose two cossacks though. Not happy.

So is any of the other teams still playing this, or are you just still yet to get to 1AD?? ie post some reports on how you're going!!!
Oh please!!! Team Warlords has left you so far behind in the dust, we didn't even know you're still there

Translation: We'll bug Immy to post reports soon
