DMI VII - Team Vanilla

Remember to not trade for Masonry as that will stop our CS bulb (we need to research/trade Meditation as well).
I just wanted to quote this, as it is such a critical point. If we learn Masonry, our Great Prophet will not 'bulb CS, nor will our Great Artist 'bulb Nationalism.

Techwise, I was thinking of going Alphabet and Literature after completing Writing. We are going to need a couple of Great Scientists to lightbulb Philosophy and Education for us. The Great Library would fit the bill quite nicely, I think.

On which note a wee dot map

I was initially torn between these two but would probably go yellow as it is better long term (red is a nice hammer city but no real long term potential)
I'm leaning more towards red dot, myself. We have a plan to lightbulb our way to Liberalism and then take MT as our free tech. I'm thinking a strong production city would be a better long term asset. Of course, we could also lay down a lot of workshops in yellow dot. But workshops aren't all that productive pre-Chemistry.

I'm thinking I might have some free time to play tonight. Not sure if I'll have time to post the report, though. Hopefully we can come up with some consensus ...

Go for red. One grassland and one plains hill won't cut it for production.

As suggested, I put Moscow's Settler on hold in favor of a couple of Axemen. After that, I :whipped: the Settler for 2 pop and dumped the overflow into a 3rd Axeman. I then started the capital on a Library, while waiting for it to grow back to size 4 (next turn).

A forest chop in St Petersburg was used to speed along the Oracle.

St Petersburg began construction of a (now-built) Barracks after the Oracle completed. I timed both the research of Writing and the completion of the Oracle for the same turn.

Confucianism was founded in St Petersburg, and the extra culture resulted in an immediate border pop for the city. The free Confucian Missionary was saved to give our next city some immediate culture.

Speaking of which ... Novgorod was founded on red dot.

The city will have a 2 tile overlap with Moscow. I had previously farmed the grass floodplains for the new city. Wasn't really sure what to build first, as we don't yet have Granaries and the city won't need an Obelisk. I thought about starting a Barracks, but opted for a Library instead. A couple of scientists would be a major boost to our research.

I opened borders with most of our opponents during the set. Hatty could end up being a good trading partner. I'm also hoping she will send a Jewish Missionary our way for the extra happiness.

Hatty has been busy spamming Settlers. I really think we need to get busy on that front, ourselves. I especially want to get the sugar/rice/pigs site down south. It may be covered in jungle, but I fear we will lose it if we don't get busy. We are also in bad, bad need of Workers.

We are showing 23 turns until Alphabet is completed. I'm wondering if we shouldn't maybe take a 9 turn detour and research Pottery. I think some cottages around our capital would be a nice plus once we switch to Bureaucracy. But then, we don't have the Workers to lay them down ... :undecide:

I wasn't sure if I was supposed to play 15 or 20 turns, so I only played 15. The save is attached ...

A couple more cities in the east to halt Hatty would be good. Interesting we haven't seen where the others are though.
This comment made me realize that I didn't post a screenshot of the world.

I'm thinking she has pretty much already blocked us off from the east. She's got a Settler on the move, which I'm hoping is going for the bananas. We should probably look at getting at least 2 more Settlers out pretty quick. We could also use at least 2 more Workers.

Nice turnset and good to see stage 1 of the CS Prophetshot complete.

Definitely think we should stick with the Alphabet beeline and Rexing southwards for the Pig Rice and then dyes sites. Mighty will have to wing it a bit as a fair amount will depend on where Hattie settles. I guess she is going for a banana coastal city.

With Hattie fog busting our E borders we are doing OK Military wise so definitely Libraries plus Settlers & workers are the priority. We will be able to initially run 1 scientist in cities without endangering the Prophet and later a second as if timed well just means we get our much needed scientists on stream fairly quickly post the prophet.

Time for Mighty to let his builder side lose - but dont worry war will come. A question to start debating is are we planning on a Catapult and Axe war versus sweet Hattie? We could despatch a warrior to search her lands for any strangely empty pastures as then at least we know we have a source of horses even if we need to take them by force.

Hatty has settled to get rice and bananas which has interfered a little with our plans for rice pigs sugar city.

Im 7 turns in and have settler approaching area to settle, I was planning on settling on site 1S of pigs to get all three but that would put us right on Hatties border, we could go 1 SW of pigs which would still have all three in BFC but I think 1S as would lose unproductive mountain long term. If we go for the latter we could keep ALexandria when we eventually capture it if we go for the former we would probs raze it. I will wait for input and probs finish in the morning.

Ummm a genuinely tricky one and does also depend on our long term intentions re Hattie.

1. If we are going to take Hattie over in the medium term (cats + axes) then I suspect we will raze Alexandria giving us Rice , pigs, Sugar + Coastal Dye / bananas. This would fit with either 1 south of Pigs or 1SW.

2. If we are staying peaceful with hattie then a culture war 1S of pigs (she is creative) seems worse than 1 SW.

Of course an alternative is to send the settler N for Fish Clam site as.
i) We don't have IW which is needed for these sites (Good news is that Hattie almost certainly does and we can pick it up in trade post alphabet)
ii) We need a city there anyway and want to get it up and running (missionary, then work boats library) as it is ideal for popping GS.

So I vote for neither 1S or 1SW but Fish Clams..
Then post alphabet trade for maths + IW , research construction and conquer Hattie. But if the team don't like fish clams I would go 1SW to reduce border tensions with hattie as it is only marginally worse as a city.

Sorry for delay so much to do so little time.......

finished out 15,

Built two workers and one Settler and St P finished the Axe it had started. The settler after discussion was settled for fish, clams. This caused our sci rate to slow so still a few turns from Alpha. I started an Obelisk here for the culture, I thought a Library might be too expensive so went for the quick(er) culture from Obelisk there is a worker on way that can chop it. All other 3 cities are at various stages of Library construction.
I have scouted Hatties lands and she has no Bronze and has yet no signs of either Iron or Horses. There is a barb city on the SW coast, our warrior can move to the hill in its borders before end turn if we desire but the city is on a hill so maybe not worth the risk of our axes for the gold. Our GP is in 2 turns.
Other than that not much to report, apologies, I played out the turns on the run so no more screenies.

PS, I am away from now for Xmas and will be until early New Year so please autoskip until further notice.
Merry Xmas and see you in 2008

But let's get some team feedback together before playing.

As I see it, my turns can go in two diffrent directions.

A) is the one where we hit Hatty as hard as possible, hoping to cripple her and steal some choice sites.

In b), we continue to build up peacefully, with the intent to wield cossacks as soon as possible.

What do the lot of you think?

My main concern at the moment is the lack of horses. If Hatty has some, we hit her hard. If she don't, we keep her as a buddy. We may need to scout her lands fully. A build up of axes isn't going to go astray in any case.

Hopefully get some value out of Alphabet and move quickly onto Literature in any case (although we have to get Meditation out of the way for Civil Service first).

Sorry for not looking at the save yet. Lunch with parents and then I promise to have a look this afternoon.

Well first of all :xmassign: to the team. Guess we all agree to have a relaxed pace over the festive period and just enjoy !!

The game is looking good IMHO, 4 good cities, enough workers to develop them and on the path to Alphabet.

Well the question as top whether Hattie must get spanked will be answered in 9 turns when we trade for Animal Husbandry and see if we have horses because she does...

So I would say we finish Alphabet. At which if, as is likely, its a monopoly. We trade COL twice to pick up
IW + Minor Techs
Maths + Minor Techs

Aiming to get all of AH, Fishing (high Priorities) and Pottery , Meditation as fillers in the trades and then decide. It makes the next mini set (till ABC finished) quite a lot of "Press Enter" so we owe Stuge fun later but we will then know where we are going with Hattie
