DMOC's Immortal Game #3: Julius Caesar

I started a new account under photobucket, to avoid the bandwidth exceeded message. I like the free workarounds. ;) My other photos will re-appear on the 10th of September.

Round 10: The Seventeen-Minute War

After capitulating Mehmed II, it was simply time to move my stack through his land and attack whatever was in my way. Although Pacal II was my target, Sitting Bull was in the way. Ah well, can't hurt. He's the most backward civ in the game, as he usually is.

Civ4ScreenShot0511.jpg

I didn't want Napoleon to take Sitting Bull as a vassal, so I forced a peace.

Civ4ScreenShot0512.jpg

My stack arrived at Sitting Bull's city.... Basically, I attacked with some artillery, and let the tanks and infantries have a field day.

Civ4ScreenShot0514.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0516.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0517.jpg

Can someone tell me how a catapult destroys a fighter? I thought they couldn't kill units.

Civ4ScreenShot0518.jpg

Anyway, capitulation time! I like the snowball effect here. :goodjob:

Civ4ScreenShot0520.jpg

I ended up gifting back the only city I captured.

The name of this round is the 17-minute war because that's how long playing and posting this round took. (Not counting the game loading time, of course.) I played this round a week ago though so my timing might be off.

In case you weren't joking about the catapult-fighter thing (in which case the answer is: they load a stone in the catapult and manage to hit the fighter with it!), Catas can kill fighters the same way they can kill Workers; by just moving on them if they have no defenders. I guess you know that Air units can't defend, same as ships in port against land units.

As far as I understand, XP is gained through air vs air battles, in other words intercepting and surviving fighter interception. I can see merit in the range&ace promotions in addition to combat, though I don't use air enough to claim myself an expert on the subject.

It's important to notice that if you use someone else's cities as airbases and the enemy you're fighting has OB with the Civ in question, they can just walk in and whack your planes whenever they feel like it. Either get him to cancel OB with your enemy or "defend" his cities with land units.

Read up this game today. Good stuff! My current Emperor game as JC, I basically crushed two civs to the extreme detriment of my economy and got nationalism with liberalism, almost to rifling. Hoping to draft + upgrade my praets to take on a good-sized Cathy. Hope it goes as well as your game has!

Round 11: 1736 AD to 1790 AD Part I [28 Turns] - A New Block of the Roman Empire

With Sitting Bull now under my control, the obvious next target was Pacal II, with his juicy land and wide assortment of wonders, including the United Nations and the Cristo Redentor. My scouting frigate explored the garrison of Uxmal. Not bad, but it won't be enough to withstand Roman forces.

Civ4ScreenShot0523.jpg

I moved my ultimate S-o-D to the city of Chaco Canyon. It was time ... for war!

Civ4ScreenShot0524.jpg

Oh wait, not yet. I took precautions and sent a plane on a recon mission - very useful, especially if you don't have much intelligence on an opponent.

Civ4ScreenShot0525.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0526.jpg

As you can see, Pacal II boasted the most up-to-date military there was. However, he lacked the production to seriously create a large army.

Civ4ScreenShot0528.jpg

War!

I sent my 90-unit stack to attack Chichen Itza, the first of many Mayan cities to fall.

Civ4ScreenShot0529.jpg

While I was doing that, I noticed that Pacal II sent a moderate stack to capture Sitting Bull's city of Mound City. Oh well, not much I can do about that.

Civ4ScreenShot0530.jpg

I might as well help out Sitting Bull as much as I can.

Civ4ScreenShot0531.jpg

After researching Computers, I targeted Robotics next (having received Refrigeration from Mehmed II in a trade) for mechanized infantry.

Civ4ScreenShot0533.jpg

By the way, here's some typical AI stupidity.

Civ4ScreenShot0534.jpg

So Pacal II finished Apollo Program while at war. Hm ... don't you think he should have just quit the program even if it had 1 turn left to go and spammed tanks?

As expected, Pacal II captured Mound City.

Civ4ScreenShot0537.jpg

However, I was more concerned with other cities, mainly Chichen Itza.

Civ4ScreenShot0538.jpg

Versailles! Awesome! :goodjob: I don't think this wonder ever expires (does it?), and it's also conveniently located for the control of other cities in the region.

As you can see below, I now knew where Sitting Bull had diverted most of his military:

Civ4ScreenShot0539.jpg

Excellent job, he captured a Mayan city that I had completely forgotten about! Finally he's being useful here.

This continent wasn't the only one that experienced plenty of action. On Napoleon's continent, the Chinese were overpowering the Egyptians.

Civ4ScreenShot0540.jpg

As you can see here, I'm defending Chichen Itza with my paratroopers and cavalry while my infantry and tanks go to capture Mutal. The strategy here is this: when I capture Mutal, I can just paradrop some paratroopers into the city rather than having them trudge through enemy territory and potentially get killed. The cavalry are in the city because they have 2 movement points and can catch up to the infantry/tank/artillery stack soon. I decided to keep the tanks in the stack (even though they would be slowed down by the infantry/artillery since they only have 1 movement point) for protection.

Civ4ScreenShot0541.jpg

I earned yet another Great General (anyone counting?). I forgot what I did with him. :crazyeye:

Civ4ScreenShot0542.jpg

While my stack was trudging along to Mutal, my planes were busy bombing the city defenses and damaging the defenders. After some artillery attacked the city, the defenders were truly battered.

Civ4ScreenShot0545.jpg

Heck, even my Great General cavalry could attack safely and get an easy experience point.

Civ4ScreenShot0546.jpg

I got a nice shrine as well as some wonders.

Civ4ScreenShot0547.jpg

Situation: 1754 AD, turn 387.

Round 11: 1736 AD to 1790 AD Part II [28 Turns] - A New Block of the Roman Empire

The United Nations tried to stop me. No way. I voted "no."

Civ4ScreenShot0554.jpg

As you can see, after capturing Mutal, I split my stack into three in order to quickly capture the three northern cities in short order.

Civ4ScreenShot0556.jpg

I'm planning on keeping almost all the Mayan cities on this continent.

Oh, I forgot to mention ... when I declared war on Pacal II, he actually had a defensive pact with Ragnar (probably because they have almost identical base peaceweights, etc.). I forgot to mention him because that's how important Ragnar was in this war. I made peace with him after killing some stray troops, and he offered me a city. I couldn't find it anywhere on the map so I was just curious to see where it was.

Civ4ScreenShot0557.jpg

No thanks, Ragnar. I gifted the city back to him for a +1 diplomatic boost.

Back at home, my victory was 100% assured with the construction of this wonder.

Civ4ScreenShot0558.jpg

This increased the production of all my cities by 50%, I think. I'm not sure how power works anyway. I also finished Fiber Optics.

Civ4ScreenShot0559.jpg

At the same time, I captured the Cristo Redentor.

Civ4ScreenShot0560.jpg

Xukpi was easy prey for my tanks. The war was coming to a close.

Civ4ScreenShot0563.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0564.jpg

Apparently, we are the wealthiest! :goodjob:

Civ4ScreenShot0565.jpg

All right all right, time to end the war. I don't want your island cities.

Civ4ScreenShot0566.jpg

The city he offered me in the peace treaty was actually not bad.

Civ4ScreenShot0567.jpg

My vassal Mehmed II continued to prove his usefulness:

Civ4ScreenShot0573.jpg

It was time to research Genetics and alleviate the numerous health problems I'm having.

Situation on the southern front. Ragnar is definitely going to be the next to go once our peace treaty expires.

One last thing I wanted to add ... you see Mansa Musa? Believe it or not, but he's the only civ that's at power parity with me - I'm way ahead of everyone else.

Haha look at Pacals eyes when you declare war on him. The guy is angry :D

Amazing how Mansa is equal in power considering he's a lot smaller then you. That's actually my experience with him most of the time. If he gets a nice bit of land and survives long enough to outtech all the other civs he can become quite a monster. I've seen him vassalize 3 countries in the days I still played at Prince.

Anyways how far are you away from Domination atm?

Noob question here.

I want to use the two mods you do as well but how do I use them? Where do I save them to? Do I just dl or do I have to install them? Thanks.

I'm not sure what the second mod is, but DMOC is using BUG, which you can download here:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=274636
and I'm pretty sure it just gives you an .exe file that you'd run like any normal program installation.

Anyway, on the game: glad to see you took all of Pacal's mainland cities. I dislike vassalizing because it can be such as hassle, especially a game like this where the front is moving quickly and it's better to have your cities as bases (as least IMO).

Three Gorges Dam is one of my favorite wonders - if I remember correctly, what it does is supply power to all your factories, which makes factories a 75% bonus instead of 25%. So essentially +50% hammers. [fixed the numbers]

Any reason that you haven't gone after Mansa Musa yet? I thought he'd hit WFYABTA.

I'm impressed by that stack of tanks. My experience with modern wars (emperor and below) is that you can probably take cities with bombers + tanks alone, but I guess sometimes the AI builds irrational amounts of antitanks that could make that costly.

further thoughts:
wow! still 100% slider!
Are there any AIs that might vassalize voluntarily?
Who is ahead of you in GDP, Napoleon? Are you undisputed tech leader?

I am only using BUG right now. I was using Blue Marble but abandoned it.

I haven't gone after Mansa Musa since he's at power parity and I would rather attack weaker civs first and wait until my land advantage multiplies over Mansa. I think he's also leading in GNP. He has hit WFYABTA unfortunately.

No AI's will voluntarily vassal - might be because I got everyone mad. Gilgamesh alone has maybe -8 for "declaring war on our friend."

I like how you're building Oxford in 1786 ;)

Power gives +50% hammers to Factories, so the Factory bonus is upped from 25% to 75%. Without Factories it gives nothing.
