DNES2: War and Civilization

The Religious History of Imperialist Tarrism:

Originating in the island's far south, along what their people call the Great River and Kenbu now calls the Southern River, Tarrism originated. Little different from ancestor worship, it had one difference- it evolved Polytheism quicker. There was also a cultural difference in the area- the Sacrifice.

All the tribes would gather and sacrifice people to the river. This used to be what distinguished Tarrism from Animism in it's early history. Sacrifice to the Northern River would replace it in Kenbu, however. In the early days, however, this didn't happen. The main god of the area was Tarr, who was said to be the source of fish.

Things began to change when a glorious chief that temporarily united the 'Great River' and almost created a civilisation was declared a god. At this stage of development, you had the beginnings of what in retrospect was 'Orthodox Tarrism'. However, as time went on more and more and more people for less and less glorious achievements were declared gods by their tribes.

But there weren't many gods to begin with- there were still reasonably sane-sized pantheons per tribe. Each tribe had a variant of Tarrism after this that bore it's name. The Fagria (across the river from Kenbu), the nomads that would later conquer it, overthrew Fagrian Tarrism after one of their people, having just been declared a god, was discovered to be a traitor.

These people added five rites, three of which would last- the denunciation of false gods in a ceremony where everybody shouted at pictures of them, funerals where people were thrown into the river, the worship of all fish as aspects of Tarr, the banishment of all criminals from the river and its banks in special ceremonies held by the river, and a ceremony of adulthood which required a successful raid into Kenbuan territory.

Imperialist Tarrism came to maturity when Gekang, a religious reformer, added all the tribal gods to the pantheon in exchange for minor land concessions. After winning a tribal civil war, (with tribal support in exchange for giving back the minor land concessions) he made a doctrine that all people who gained glory in life would be gods. He also invented the afterlife based on the gods choosing who got into it, as a way of trying to keep his people in line.

Gekang would ultimately fail, and his supporters would flee southeast. Eventually, they would attack and conquer Kenbu and institute a Republic. Meda, it's conqueror, was wise enough to realize the merits making his religion into something saner. It took time and almost a civil war, but he managed to eliminate the ceremony of adulthood and replace it with a ceremonial version of a ceremonial raid into Kenbuan territory, and allow those not close enough to the Southern River to use the Northern River.

After that, Imperialist Tarrism was what it is today. It got its name from its opponents, but it stuck. It encourages glory, but has the potential to cause civil strife.

Did he prepare for a sudden smilie face invasion? I think not.

I think yes. ;) Little did you know until now that while everybody else was busy dying, Karlyk II fled into the night with a reality modification device, and wrote the smilie invasion out of existance (as you can clearly see by looking where the smilie update used to be). :p

As I already said, the update is quite worth the wait. Lots of epic battles here.

Out of curiosity, do you play the battles out in RTW?

You have fought bravely, but your cause is doomed now, and only fools struggle against such odds, when the Eternal Blue Sky has already for the second time demonstrated that your bloodline had lost its mandate (we have taken your second capital - do not make us take your third).

If you surrender now, withdraw from Altynai, return the library texts and concede the claims to any of the mainland Altynian lands, you and yours will be granted amnesty and allowed to maintain your maritime and overseas possessions; and all those who so wish will be allowed to leave with you.

Consider this offer carefully, and if you refuse or betray expect no mercy.

So das, peace or no? Do you really want to come after me? I'll make you regret it if you do. ;)

Krimzon, I'm giving you a friendly advice: never start the peace talks with OOC comments.

Thanks for the compliments :D

So be it, we will have peace with you – but we refuse to sign any peace with the Goths. Accept this, or there will be no peace at all.

From the Western Goths

We thankyou for the slaves. We have fought well together, and we would welcome a league of germanic peoples.

To Saxony
From the Eastern Goths

Although we do not seek battle with you, we are wary of joining such a league.

To Kenbu
From Altynai

So be it, we will share our knowledge of other lands with you.

Great stories, Krimzon and Neverwonagame2 :) thanks, and Tarrism will appear in the next update. Speaking of which…

Orders deadline: 48 hours from this message (roughly 00:00 GMT, Saturday 30th)

I will wait longer if need be, though I would like to speed up the pace of this. Next update *will* be a lot slimmer (well, probably). So be warned that even ‘big’ orders may only get a few lines mention in the update.

…

A few fixes and stuff: Ulakam now has slightly more forces than was posted last night. Also, Yutan and Zakutan had their spearmen and swordsmen amounts mixed up :crazyeye: Now, Yutan really does have the weaker military.

And, a few little mistakes on the map: (Ive fixed all this now for next time, but haven’t bothered altering the uploaded map, since im about to explain them all anyway...)
Lisht is *not* a trade centre, as the grinding assault by masses of Anguile troops kinda killed off trade there :) Jaen was meant to be the new trade centre in the area (the catalyan colony across the straights, next to Umidia)

The Agrinese city of Kafa (north from Agre) should have a little blob of grey land around it, as the peasants are revolting there

Also, in Taejon, the cities of Iri Hieju and Sia Taega are meant to be on smaller rivers than run into the main one, but these rivers have actually been missing from the map since the start of the game.

Finally, The Ulakam city of Naman (one of the western ones) somehow got shunted eastwards away from the river during the last update. It should be on the river instead of where it is now.

Forgot this diplo, srry Das. As for RTW, i just messed about with it for some graphics - maybe a little hint of how to randomise things, if something unusual happened, but i didnt really use it for working out battles.

Regretably, we must accept. We withdraw our claims to any of your land, and we must accept your rule of the mainland. The ancient tablets and scrolls from the great library shall be returned as a gesture of goodwill.

TO: CATALYA
FROM: THE ANGUILE EMPIRE

We will no longer accept Catalyan rule within Europe. We demand all current gains in Catalya, and we also demand that Catalya relinquish Lisht to the Anguile Empire. Jaen shall be ceded to Anguile. All overseas possesions shall be ceded to Ys, as shall all ports which Ys currently occupies. In short, we require the dissolution of the Catal state. You cannot win this war, if you chose to surrender now, your people shall be given their freedom WITHIN our empire. If you chose to fight, your people shall perish.

We would be blind not to see the weakness of our position - But, since you seek our total destruction, we have nothing to lose by continuing the fight. What man goes willingly into complete slavery and shame?

The remains of our treasury will be spent on weapons of war. War to the last it will be - but only if YOU will it to be so.

It seems you have run into difficulties. How ironic? Did we not say such a path would only lead to misfortune. Perhaps you should rethink your position, and the path you have taken? You may not last long if you do not. ;) Good luck to you.

Kenbu's Reformers: (OOC: Set before my first turn)
Kenbu was made great initially by a series of great men, leading up to the foundation of the Kenbu Republic. Each one added something to the whole, though in the end none of them totally controlled the result, and all of them would have wished for something diffrent. However, what did come about was for the good.

Garen, the first of the people which made Kenbu great, began by hiring random people from the Ys Leauge to begin modernizing Kenbu. For fear of them disapproving, this was done behind the Ys Leauge's back. Garen was popular enough to have himself crowned King of Kenbu. He instituted the Order of Fanatics against all who disapproved.

To prevent his legacy being undone, he made the sucession to kingship go through the army- the head of the army was heir to the throne. It was autonomous enough to elect it's own leadership, so in that way was a very powerful oligarchial part of society- at least for now.

Farek, a good friend of Garen, was next. His reforms were to create an efficent free market sysyem. To do this, he created the first companies, which people could buy shares in, and thus get a share of the profits, as distinct from beign an employee, who only got a share of the work for a bit of pay. This distinction was unpopular, and triggered a revolt which was put down.

Farek intended to fight a war to annex the wood source to the north. What instead happened was that he faced the great general Guarar, who defeated him in the Battle of the Forest by a series of ambushes, and in the end burning parts of the forest while both side's men were in it. Guarar died in the effort, but so did Farek- all hopes of advancing north were also dead with the loss of the army.

Garen envisioned an independent Kenbu which was barely greater then what came before it. Farek envisioned a lesser version of the Ys Leauge, and Argon something stronger. But none of them would envision what would happen to Kenbu- a society run by the people and for the people, with a religion completly diffrent...

Argon's great reforms were to begin public education. These public schools were faced with another revolt, which was put down. However, Argon pointed out that the people revolted against the companies, which were now beggining to bring prosperity to the people. The popular spirit of freedom was slowly going away, so Argon began to add in another reform- altering the culture to make it like Eastern Europe. However, he would never get anywhere significant with that one.

Southern nomads invaded Kenbu. Argon was no military leader, and was defeated by the charismatic Meda, the nomad leader. Meda and his men were out for wealth, and initially offered to spare the city in exchange for all it's gold. Argon refused, and was executed by one blow from a sword.

Meda, desperate to have his wealth, proclaimed a Republic of Kenbu. This Republican system made him popular. He also promised not to make any reforms the people didn't want, though he didn't scrap any of Kenbu's strengths. His religion, Imperialist Tarrism, was not imposed on the people, but spread rapidly because it was assosiated with his popularity. Thus, he became accepted.

It seems you have run into difficulties.

It seems that you are so desperate that you have started spamming people you probably don't even know. ;)

In the other news, I might consider signing peace with you - then again, maybe I'm just giving you a false hope. Nothing definite yet.

Okies, it seems i might be away most of Saturday, so I might not be able to update till Sunday :(. So, officially 24 hours in left on the deadline, but you might have another 24 hours after that. If there happens to be enough orders tomorrow, and im not out on Saturday, then I might update as originally planned. So, to be sure, send orders within 24 hours :)

Also, I don’t want to start moaning, but im detecting a lack of interest in this from most people… Any suggestions on the way things are going? Any changes you’d like to see? want to go to a BT? Or do you want to bring it to a close?

Ive got 2 orders in so far, which I guess is still enough for a brief update. Any kind of order would be better than nothing tho. Just to remind you, ive been regularly accepting two or three lines of orders from some players.

I will send orders after I am done with Harleqin's NES and Luckymoose's NES. I have two wars I am fighting so it will be a while till I get to this one :).

By the way your NES still has me interested but perhaps the deadline could be moved back a little?

If not I will get orders in again but they will be quite a bit shorter again unfortunatly.

I've got some diplo to hammer out daft, once that's done I'll decide what to do next. A lot of things hang in the balance of these decisions. ;)
