I was thinking this Off-topic forum could use some more contributors! How would you guys like it if I brought up this forum to my church's bible study organization? Maybe not all would "stick around", but I bet I could coax 50 or so to be regular contributors, especially on topics about, or that become, atheism vs christian debate!

Is this something you'd enjoy? I sure would. :)

Maybe you should read some of the prior atheism v. christian debates before suggesting this idea to your fellows.

The activity on this forum has increased in recent months. Not sure a large wave of church-goers would be beneficial, as even most religious people on this forum are hyper-critical of religious texts and the way your "typical" religious person might conduct themselves IRL.

The atheism vs. christian debate is one of the most frequented on this forum, so adding more to it in high volume seems like a bad choice in general even with the above point ignored.

plis...no more religious debates. Ask A Theologian is more than sufficient for all my religious needs.

Do not do this.

well played, OP, well played.

I don't think we actually have many "Christian vs. atheist" debates around here. We have plenty of "jerk who believes in god vs. jerk who doesn't believe in god" debates, sure, but the greater majority of believers and non-believers get on fine. I wouldn't like to think that I'm being even loosely represented in those jerk-vs-jerk threds, and I'm sure most posters would agree, so why frame it in those terms?

Which Christians? Those that have a reasoned understanding and dedication to their faiths, or those who say 'my pastor said that the bible says this, so anyone who doesn't believe exactly that is an atheist and is going to hell'. Cause, you know, there's a real big difference between them.

The first rule of OT is you do not talk about OT. The second rule of OT is you do not talk about OT.

There are three things I have learned never to discuss with people: religion, politics, and the Great Pumpkin.

I'd suspect these new comers would get trolled/flamed, but that's the nature of the internets.

Idk this forum is pretty civil compared to most. Ever perused through a dota forum? And that's just talking about a freakin video game.

It would be interesting to see what came first, a ban, or loss of interest.

There are some here who could argue both sides as in a normal flame throwing debate.

As an online discussion on religion grows longer, the probability of all people involved being jerks approaches 1?

Any trolling or flaming would be handled just like it always is. Report the offending post and if the moderation staff determines there's a problem then the poster will be dealt with appropriately.

New members are always welcome, any legacy members who forget their manners would be held responsible for their failures to live up to the standards of our community.

My personal opinion (not representative of the other staff or site administration) is that I'd love to see some new posters here. More opinions = more vibrant discussion!

For better or worse this place always asks for more CivFanatics.

Spoiler :
For a more serious response: I think that having people who respect a religion come to a subform where often this sort of debate leads to rather bad blood, is not a good idea.

And non-religious types never getting into flaming wars?
