Um, care to elaborate on that a little? What's wrong with Pelosi and/or Syria (I mean in reference to this visit ;) )?

Only if an unfortunate accident were to befall her.

I wish she'd keep her mouth shut instead misspeaking for the Israelis.

Why is she visiting? I mean shes not the secretary of state or president so why is it her responsibility and what could come from it?

After a bit of a background check, I think she should have. The former policy of demonzing and isolating what the current administration saw as "terrorist" countries was not working too well.

Poll is up now.

My problem is that Syria is a dictatorship that supports international terrorism & is in a declared state of war with Israel, a close ally of the U.S. The State Department asked her not to go. Her visit lends legitimacy to a dictatoprship. What is she trying to accomplish? She is being completely irresponsible.

The point should be that it isn't the job of the Speaker of the House to act as a diplomat, especially to a country that is hostile to the United States and the U.S.'s allies.

Since the US doesn't seem to mind handing over suspected terrorists [innocent Canadian civilians] to Syria to torture for intelligence they might provide, I fail to see why American officials shouldn't be sent to butter up to Assad. You never know who Bush cs might want to render next.

(check out Maher Arar if you don't know what I'm talking about)

Funny that you say that because nancy pelosi and bush dont agree on anything and are on the opposite ends of the political spectrum.

How could she do someting so...so....unilaterally...? :mischief:

Maybe she did overstep her bounds, but I think everyone here and there knows who she is, who she represents and what she beleives in. If it opens up a constructive dialogue, who knows, it might be that elusive first step forward for lasting peace in the middle east..

Hey, it's Bush criticizing Pelosi for visiting Syria.... but he didn't seem to mind handing over Arar to the Syrians.. or Republican congressmen visiting Damascus for that matter. Last time I checked, Pelosi had no influence whatsoever in this case.

I wouldn't mind seeing Pelosi, Bush, and just about everyone else in high office go to Syria--as long as they don't come back. ;)

A member of congress visiting a foreign power isn't the exception, its generally the rule. Theres nothing out of the ordinary about this trip.

I agree.

Bush is criticizing her trip also.

Sure. Congress people are always going to different countries on "fact finding" missions, what's the big deal, half the worlds a freaking dictatorship. She doesn't claim to be negotiating for the government or to support the Assiad government. And I for 1 would like to know what Syria has to say unfiltered through GWB myopic mind.
