DoC Domination Challenge

No, no, no, Leoreth.

If you check the save I uploaded,
I'm Rome, and I'm trying to vassalize Russia.
My power should be sufficient,
I have good relations with them,
and I tested the situation several times,
clearly, Russia was inclined to vassalize
because a few times, they vassalized to
the Vikings (so I had to pay the Vikings to DOW the Coreans).
And because Russia & Rome are both in Europe,
and I'm at peace+good relations, and Russia is willing,
what's keeping me from vassalizing Russia?
Oh, I suppose you didn't have Astronomy then? I think Russia counts as "far away" from Rome.

Very impressive, Jusos! How did you manage to tech so well? And what civics did you run?

Thanks, tech trading and early bulbing is important. I kept contact with every civ and checked often whether they are willing to trade techs. Also if tech that you want is tradeable with someone, but you can't pay price, tech towards it until they are willing to trade.
I went with the starting civics + pantheon for quite some, although I did make one change, but can't recall what it was. Later I ran the capitalism civics before switching to autotarian ones.

Not much to tell here. I conquered Italy from start and then killed Portugal soon after their spawn. Then I took Paris and capitulated France. After that settling America was really easy, I got all the best spot without rivalry. Later I vassalised Russia, capitulated Turkey and helped them toto conquer Egypt. Then Germany declared war on me, but they got quickly capitulated by mechanized infantry, bombers and tanks. That was enough to win. Really easy, I just wonder why I didn't go for victory earlier, since teching this far didn't really have any uses. Spain can most likely dominate with just Conquistadors.

I tried Monarch/Epic speed with China, just to check out the difference between Normal and Epic speed. Turns out under Epic speed things are easier: Early civs have more turns (literally, for example Rome spawns at turn 90 in normal speed, but later than turn 135 in epic speed); You have more time to maneuver units etc. .

I blocked Dilli and Varanasi and built Dhaka, and India spawned at Mumbai. I expanded as fast as I can and got the gold at Kunming, gems at Dhaka, and Monarchy from Persia to solve early game happiness problem. I vassalized India (had to declare on Persia, ruined trade routes for a while) but later they just died to barbs. Then I tried to tech and build up my cities as fast as possible. Due to the many advantages of Epic speed I got Astronomy at 792 AD and later vassalized Spain, Russia, France and HRE by 1090 AD. From then on it's basically trying to grab enough land. Ottoman declared on me so I wanted to capitulate them, but HRE and Russia rushed in and they just collapsed (which is bad since it raises the percentage of land I need to control). At one point I needed 28% of land which is . Luckily at 1700 AD Netherlands respawned and Prussia spawned, so I got away with 26%.

I really should've conquered Babylon (Mausoleum of Maussollos is there), it would've been greatly helpful. But I was too concerned with maintenance and stability.

Mongolia had no city to flip (I razed them all), and after they took and lost the city in Russia they just died. They spawned at peace with me but invaded Russia anyways, I knew that was going to happen so I sent War Elephants and Pikemen to Russia beforehand. (I built a road to connect to Russia, which is not so possible in normal speed.)
Magically the Mongols revived out of nowhere just a few turns later and invaded the Iranian Plateau, but after a few hundred years they collapsed.

Population is not a problem for China :crazyeye:

And I think it's safer to convert your vassals to Orthodoxy, otherwise they may declare on each other (and you) at reformation.

I went west from the start and took Italy to keep the euros in order. Simultaniously I mopped Middle East from the Arab and Seljuk remnants. Around 1500 I conquered Egypt after which bullied Germany and France vassalised. I saved them both and took Ukraine from Russia. Aztecs peace vassalised. After that it was just teching until 1710, when I took Persia. I beeffed my economy and proceeded to India to get the land. All in all it was quite easy and I had built nearly every wonder there is. China was also my vassal.

Very nice, I also didn't know Turkey was so good at teching ( 8 turns for Fission at 1300 beakers with that many cities?).

Thanks. Actually it would be more like 3-4 turns, since I am running only 30% science and 60% culture.

Yup, I know, 8 turns for fission isn't so impressive an sich, but I noticed your science slider.

The spawn wasn't particularly good, but I didn't care to wait for another. I had to fight England, France and Spain before gaining control of all of NA. I managed to rush SoL, Pentagon and Westminster Palace, which are all important for world domination. Mali vassalised first, then I capitulated England by conquering almost all of their American posessions, ~8 cities. Then I poured down the west side of the Andies, capitulated Incas and wrapped some Spanish cities for them. Eventually Spain's vassal Italy broke free, after which Spain capitulated immeatidely. Meanwhile my fleet entered the Gulf of Persia and took Kuwait and Oman. Iran was ready to capitulate even before that, so I took them in after I had gotten my oil (I had 14 oil resources at the best). Then I culture bombed some of my cities in Canada and turned up the culture slider to get the land

I wanted to try out China with all the fuss surrounding it.

Well the beginning was just settling and teching. I believe that my city placement is quite favourable for domination purposes. My settling order was Xian, Hangzhou, Beijing, Aomen, Qingzhou, Mandalay and Changhun. I didn't bother to rush Korea from start, because I didn't need another city by then, but eventually they declared war on me and I took Hancheng. I later razed the city on the iron and took Botankou. My caravels waited for the Incas and Aztecs to spawn and took the conquerors. Inca was vassalised and Aztecs annihilated. I kept Olximche and Tuitan, from were I eventually settled NA.

After Biology I took northern India (Varanasi and Lahore), while France, England and Mughals were fighting in the south. I had razed Dilli milleanias ago when it was independent (I believe squatting it to be cheating). Ethiopia vassalised and became really strong. I had kept them alive by giving them Feudalism ages ago. Russia also vassalised to be saved from HRE. Lastly I vassalised Indonesia, since they had been begging it for decades. The Netherlands were also willing to capitualte, but I rather let my vassals conquer their lands. When I had the pop, I settled some cities in Australia and NA and culture bombed them to get the land.

I'm speechless and also kind of sad,
you knocked both Fresol and I out of
the Highest Score + Fastest Completion
respectively.

Is this still 1.81?
Plastics in 1787.

Still trying to pick up my jaw.

Thanks! Yeah, that is 1.81. Sadly I didn't find have a save beyond 1690, so there is no point uploading it.

Ethiopia has the potential to make a good vassal, if they survive the early natives fairly on their own.

I think that China's biggest problem is that you can't trade the new techs and you need to force one of your vassals to research them first. That slows the teching significantly. All in all I think that this can be quite easily improved. For instance I have only four vassals and Indonesia is one of them. The flaw that I see in your china strategies is that you seem to research everything on your own, share the burden. Also imo focusing too much on the neighbours, especially early, is rather pointless and slows the teching.

Any ideas for the next civ?
