Zionel
Chieftain
Hi!
Been reading these forums for a long time, and I really enjoy it. I've learned alot, and i'm sure i'd still be playing on chieftain if it wasn't for all the great advices and strategies. Currently i'm on monarch, I started with cultural and spaceship victories, and I have now moved on to domination, wich I enhoy the most. My last game was won in 1766 with Ragnar (Vikings). I guess it's pretty decent, but i'd like to improve more before i move on to the next difficulty, hence i go here to seek pro help. Before i contiue i'd like to point out that my native language is not english, but once you get used to my gramatical errors and all the typos, i'm sure you'll understand me
If you don't feel like reading the whole post and evaluate the game, wich i would understand, i'd be very happy with some general advice on how to win as early as possible. Any comment is greatly appriciated.
------------------------------------
These are the settings I played my game on:
Ragnar, Vikings (Financial, Agressive)
Epic Speed
Standard Map Size
Tropical
Continents
No barbarians, (pathetic you say? I guess it might be, but I like to start without them, then I introduce them as an extra challenge once I feel i'm comfertable with the difficulty)
------------------------------------
Now, I didn't know that I'd be posting this, so I never took any pictures during the game, except for at the end. I did however have the initial 4000BC save, so I replayed the start and got some early screenshots.
Here's the starting position:
I know alot of you like to play shadowgames so u can compare it with something. If you like the game settings and think the starting position looks interesting, then don't read any further, here's the initial save.

I had rice, so I researched Agriculture first, then i headed to BW and got mining along the way. The very first thing i buildt was a worker. Once he was ready, I let the city grow to size two while I started building a warrior. Meanwhile, the worker farmed the rice and one of the foodplains. Once I had city size 2, i switched to building a settler, and the worker chopped him out once he was done farming. I had lots of forests so i chopped out two settlers quite fast, wich I had to. This was because of the near precense of Mehmed and Genghis Khan.
Here's a shot from the replay i did. Keep in mind that this isn't the real game, i just scouted everything and went for BW to show the land/resources. I have also made a dotmap of where i founded my cities, and where GK founded his 3rd city. The numbers indicate what order the cities were build, along with GK and Mehmet's cities. The "C" is the capital.
The city that had copper was my second city. I chose not to settle it right next to the copper, since it would not allow me to build a city to the left of it, wich would also make a very good city. I was gonna chop a monument pretty fast anyway, so I wasn't very afraid of loosing it to culture. My third city claimed the gold, wich was an important early luxury. GK founded the incense city before i got to it, but I had already planned to axerush him, so it was ok. Why didn't I take this as my first city? Well, i was gonna make lots of axes, and a city with several hills and rivers would be an effective axebuilder. GK's second city was founded to the right of his capital, wich was a very good coastal city, but you can't see it on the screen.
Before I started the axerush, i decided to build the oracle in my capital. I still had two forests that could be chopped, and that free tech is always appriciated. My fourth city was also founded, it would later provide spices, dye and also had rice and another gold source.
Ok, no more pictures now. But once i felt i had enough axes, i declared war on GK, and took 3 cities from him, including his capital. There was one left, but he had stacked up 7 or 8 archers in it, so i had to leave him alone in peace for a while. I'm not sure why he stacked them up in that city while he left the capital pretty defenceless, AI is wierd sometimes.
Next warmove i decided on, was to invade some of Monty's territory wich was south/west. I had three reasons for this; Monty had seven cities, and you don't want him to be powerful late in the game. Secondly, and most importantly, one of the cities i planned to capture had horses, and i had none. Mehmet was to my south/east and i shared buddism with him, wich he had founded. He would obiously make a good friend and trading partner early on. I took three of montys cities, crippling him quite a lot. But i couldn't finish him, because axe and swordsmen were becoming a bit outdated, and there was also some maintenance to consider. The horse city turned out to be the christion holy city as well.
So, now i went into buildingmode a few turns to stabalize my economy and get civil service for those great berserkers. I forgot to mention that I chose Metal casting as the free Oracle tech. I had gold for the added happiness from forges, and i knew I needed the extra hammers for military production, plus it's a great tech to trade. Alphabet was next in line, and I made a few trades with it.
Ok, once i got Civil service, I finished off the last city that GK had, and I was forced to start warring with Mehmet. I took all his cities except one with knights and berserkers. Yes, again I had to leave one city. This time i was fighting unhappiness due to war weariness and i simply had to abort. Well, he was almost dead, and he never got his UU. Ten turns later, he died. I belive it was around 800-900 AD when i had knights and started the war. Next was Monty, i now had a good enough economy to take his cities and I defeated him pretty easily with cavalry and grenadiers. There were now three civs left besides me.
Frederick (Germany), wich was my trading partner once mehmet was no more. Although he had a different religion he stayed catious/pleased with me until I declared war on him, wich meant a few decent trades and open borders. The other two was on another continent, they were Stalin (Russia) and Wang Kon (Korea)
Frederick did have riflemen the entire war, but they were no match for my grenadiers backed up with cannons and cavalry. He never made it to Military tradition, tho he had horses.
At the end of the war i started creating lots of galleons to invade stalin, but there was no need to send them over. Turned out i had just over 64% land once Frederick was done, yay!
I've tried to explain as best as i could how I played it, hopefully it's enough for some of you to give me some pointers on how to play better. I personally believe that i'm still in a buildermode, and I wait a too long between my wars. I like to have an overwhelming army that can destroy my opponents fast and efficiently. I'm not sure this is the way to go.
Here's some information i gathered at the end of the game.
The score i had throughout the game:
Power:
Demographics:
And finally the normalized score:
I forgot to save the turn before i won, but here's the game once i won if you'd like to inspect it.

Like I said, if you actually read the entire post, I thank you for your time, and any help offered is greatly appriciated
