Doomsday in 2012?

I voted for Tommy Vercetti is awesome because there is a 0.00% chance of it happening. It's sad that the media is trying to make a quick buck off of it. I've heard that some teenagers, willingly believing it, have become very depressed and start to contemplate suicide.

And the first thing you must understand is that the entire world who believes in it are misunderstanding the Mayan calendar. It never said anything about the world ending in 2012. If you ask any Mayan today about the date, there is no real significance. Nothing real special will happen on it.

AFAIK, the Mayan Calender's end date isn't anymore significant than our modern December 31...

Just because they could track the movement of the glowing dots in the sky, doesn't mean they new jack about real astronomy. When you boil it down, it is nothing more than Astrology. You might as well put as much significance in your daily horoscope.

That is all.

As I said, Im fairly sure that the calender just repeats I read this in some books and stuff including a big university textbook.

IIRC, the Mayan calender doesnt end, it repeats.

It does end, but when it does the earth won't exist any more. In Mayan mythology, we're at the third attempt at creating the world, and 2012 is the point where the last attempt was destroyed. Seeing as very few people outside of southern Mexico and Guatemala believe in any other elements of Mayan mythology, I don't see why we should accept this one.

To say that the Mayan calendar ends/predicts the end of the world in 2012 is the same as saying that the Julian calender did the same in the year AD 1000 or the Gregorian calender will do the same in the year AD 10,000.

Maybe. Of course, the world could end tomorrow, or it can end in 2013, or in 2037.

The only Doomsday theories that we should care about are things that will likely happen eventually. An asteroid or comet impact is one that given enough time is bound to happen but it's also something we could stop. Nuclear war is another possible scenario, but again it is something that doesn't have to happen if we are vigilant about keeping it from occurring.

I'm fairly sure the Maya themselves don't believe the world is going to end in 2012. Which begs the question why some people think they understand the Maya calendar better than the Maya.

They don't. My point was that the underlying assumptions are things almost nobody believes outside of the Maya. But you are right about that stupidity. I seriously wonder why this should be a question to anybody who's examined both sides of the issue at any length.

I'm inclined to think it meant "the world we know" is going to end, as a metaphor for change not destruction. Obviously the way the world was defined as by the Aztecs has probably become unrecognizable to them (assuming they can observe present day) and seem like another world.

But change happens daily and is a process. The same way the person that is "you" is different than the person "you were" longer ago, and in a side by side comparison would not resemble the same "person."

The day this is supposed to happen, 12-21-12, is my Birthday. Sucky day for a birthday!
Not at all, you'll get laid for sure.

Shoot, half this forum could get laid on that day, I predict they'll be some great parties on December 21st, 2012. :)
