Double Your Pleasure

well now I´ve reinstalled the **** 3 times.....and it keeps crashing.

I can play up till version 4 but when I install the last update I can´t even start the game.

I just get a error msg.

I think it´s the patch that´s got the problem since i´m not the only one with this prob.

Plz advice needed :O)

Me thinks it may be an error in the new script.txt?

I dont know. I have never gotten this error. The only problems I have with civ 3 are the fact that it performs an illegal operation every time i quit back to windows. I guess that is firaxis' way of getting people addicted . . . .?

BTW: If you know what would cause a game to crash when you are leaving (i had this prob before, but forgot why), lemme know. I know for sure that it is a problem with the mod i made, but that is not specific enough to allow me to fix it.

Hi

2 night ago playing perfectly fine with the ver 0.4
last night installed the 0.45 files & civ now crashes on start up.

major bummer
:borg: :die!:

I just re-installed everything and updated to DyP v.0.45 - and the game works fine for me

Those who experience crashs at start-up ...how far do you get? Are you stuck without even getting to the intro movie, or do you get to the menu but nothing happens when you press "new game" - I need more details, as clearly it is not the Mod itself which is the problem - otherwise it wouldn't be working for me (I even re-downloaded the files from the DyP site just to be sure I didn't have 'better' files on my computer.)

If you get to the menu, but cant start a game by pressing the button, It may be because patch 1.21f isn't installed (check the Add/Remove programs section of your control panel to be sure - there should be an entry named "Civilization III v.1.21f" if it's installed - if not, install it again and re-apply the DyP mod)

I have to sleep now, but if the problem persists when I wake up, rest assured I'll work as hard as possible to solve it.

DING DING DING DING DING!!!!!!!

WE HAVE A WINNER!!!!!

After reading this, I went back to my backed up Civ3 directory (thank god for my 100 Gig hard drive :D ) and I copied the original script.txt file. I then renamed the script.txt file in the actual game directory to script2.txt and pasted the original script.txt file into the directory and....VIOLA!!

I am now back in business!!!! :goodjob: GOD I'M GOOD!!! :D

That is correct, we don't even get to see the intro movie

Well, replacing the v4.5 script.txt file (as seen above) fixed it for me

I guess you'll have to go through the v4.5 script.txt file line by line to see what is going on. :p

For those of you that are still having trouble with this new crash type bug, follow my instructions above to see if they help (Thanks GIDustin :) )

1) Rename script.txt to script2.txt
2) Download the attached script.txt file into your Civilization III\Text directory.

Hopefully this will work until it gets fixed.

It works! :goodjob: Well, at least I managed to get a game going.

Thank you:beer:

Now I have to reinstall all the graphics. I had forgotten how dull the original graphics were.

That is so weird. I am not having any problems with the script.txt, all I changed was the dawn of time text to eliminate the reference to mining, roads and irrigation.

But I am glad that its working again.:crazyeye:

This is too strange - the script works fine for me too.....I don't mean to be a terrible pain in the a## but did any of you check the control panel to see if patch 1.21f was listed in the Installed programs box.

I'm only saying this, cause the script in 0.45 is the first one to be based on the script.txt that was included in patch 1.21f, and the only thing I can imagine would be causing this problem is if patch 1.21f is _not_ installed...

If it's there, try uninstalling it, then reinstalling it (Only the patch, not civ3) and then reapply the DyP mod...

Sorry for all this trouble - betatesting isn't always what it's hyped to be, is it? :(

So, the bic is based on 1.17 while the script is - for the first time in 0.45 - based on 1.21

I think there's a good chance that this is causing the problem.

Except that it's working fine for Kal-El and me. Are we the only ones who are able to run the game without a problem?

BTW, when uninstalling patch 1.21f, it's not enough to clean out the install dir - the Windows registry will still have the patch registered, so the next time you double-click the Civ3v121f.exe, the installer will look up in the registry, find the key and think that you still have the patch installed - and subsequently attempt to uninstall it, thereby possibly removing some files from the Civ3 directory. That's why, before you re-install civ3, make sure none of the patches are listed in the Add/Remove programs list.

It did that to me, but I assumed that the subsequent reinstallation of the patch would provide the necessary files. Don't you think so?

But still, just to be sure it seems that the correct process is:
1. Uninstall patch 1.21
2. Uninstall civ3
3. Clean out Civ3 install directory (you can keep saves and hig scores if you prefer)
4. Defrag (optional)
5. Install Civ3
6. Patch 1.21
7. Install DyP

No. I had a crash after building the Sphinx, and it disappered when I changed to the script.txt provided by Nightstorm above.

Yes, of course - just wasn't sure if everyone noticed that the patch installer actually switches between installing and uninstalling.

Those who had problems before they changed the script.txt - please send me the Filedate, Bytecount and version no. for the Civilization3.exe and Civ3edit.exe you currently use. Find this by right-clicking on the file in explorer and choose properties. The filedate is listed under the Changed heading (I think it's called this in English Windows versions), Bytecount is above, called Size (give me the number in parenthesis) and Version is only available for the Civ3edit.exe - it's at the top on the second tab (called Version)

TIA - I really wan't to know what's going on here.

Also solved my problem!
The game wasnt starting at all. No startup splash or nothing.
Now it works again.

I can feel a v0.5 comming up SOON !! with everything in one file.
And before it is released it is passed round to the a couple of us to test for validity etc.
Then (this is after testing) it is announcedon the board .. "and there was much rejoicing"
