Anyways, most people don't see the differnence between african and indian elephents if it wasn't for the size and some minor minor details (at least how I see it)
Looks very good, are you doing more elephant units than this? It would be great with some "very" generic ones aswell. Oh, and I just love the old Elephant Archer, especially the armour, if you are going to remake it, in my opinion you should keep the armour.
Yes, I'm planning on making a full line of Elephants.. and remaking my original ones. My original ones, I tried to keep rather generic. Yes, they have turbans, but other than that, the dress is very neutral, and the elephant's equipment is very neutral.
I have two units for the Indians and two for the Carthaginians planned that will be very distinct for those two cultures. I'm cooking up a really nice batch for the Indians. I've acquired a lot of pictures...
Ultimately, this is what I want to do:
Generic Elephant Archer - A basic remake of the existing Elephant Archer but correcting all of the mistakes I made the first time.
Generic Cataphract Elephant - I don't know if cataphract is the right word, but I've seen pictures of elephants with some kind of chain-linked or woven armor that I think would make a good Knight replacement... It has a bit of a MidEast twinge to it, but it could work for the Europeans and Asians as well.
Generic Elephant Cavalry - A remake of my old Elephant Cavalry fixing all of the mistakes... The riders I'm keeping basically the same. Turban-wearing infantry in European uniforms... so it can be used for India, but it also could be used for one of the colonial powers.
Indian War Elephant - Totally new unit... A very Indian unit... might be a good Knight replacement... and then the War Elephant can be moved to a Horseman position? That's for you folks to decide...
Mughal War Elephant - In terms of complexity, this unit is massive! It's probably the most complex unit I have ever done... and probably ever will do... Including the elephant, this unit has eight characters... The elephant, the rider, an archer on top, a drummer on top, and four pikemen: one posted at each foot of the elephant. It is essentially the crown jewel of the elephant units.
Numidian Forest Elephant - A one-man elephant. The elephant itself is much smaller than the standard elephant. Not terribly complicated, but quality nonetheless.
Carthaginian War Elephant - The big mamas of the Carthaginian army. This is the one in the preview. Large wooden box on the back, an archer and an infantryman in the box and a mahout riding on the back just behind the ears.
Long term....
Gatling Gun Elephant - I haven't given up on this one either. I've got most of it rendered, but the Death anim was a hassle... I'll address it at some point.
Chinese War Elephant - I found some pictures of Chinese War Elephants, and I thought they were pretty cool, so I decided to give them their own Medieval Elephant variant.
Khmer War Elephant - I decided the Khmer really need to have a unit line opened for them... in addition to making the Phak'ak Man at some point in the future, I'm also going to give them at least one unique elephant unit... They do look a bit different from the Indian variants...
And I'd also like to an Aztec War Elephant at some point... and that would ultimately be part of a larger effort to allow every civ the opportunity to build elephant units... I'm still iffy on that whole concept because I feel it sort of takes away from the uniqueness of the Carthaginians and Indians. If I do the Aztecs, then I have to make an Iroquois one, a Japanese one, so on and so forth... I'm pretty sure that Civ4 will be out by then...
And since I'm going into all this, I feel I should probably also cover the camels.
Here's the plan for the camels:
Camel Rider - a remake of the Camel Rider... I'm going to basically keep this one the same (except for the mistakes, of course). It's nice... it's simple. Could be Numidian, Moorish, Ethiopian... whatever you need basically in the Middle East.
War Camel - Keeping this one the same too. Still going to have the Saracen Rider... he'll fit right in with my other Arab units of the same era.
Mamluk - A remade Mamluk... still keeping it basically the same though... just better
Cataphract Camel - Actually, I think I'm going to call it a Camel Lancer... you've seen the preview for this... basically, a Persian UU... I MAY make another cataphract that is more European so camels can be opened up to non-MidEast civs...
Camel Cannoneer - I read about this in a book about warfare in the MidEast in the high Middle Ages... and I saw pictures and I thought it was pretty awesome. Camels with small rotating cannons attached to their saddles... I'll basically be making all that from scratch... should be a blast hehe...
Bedouin Raider - In addition to fixing the problems, I'm revamping a number of features on this unit including placating the complaints from people who didn't like the dismounted attack... The unit will include a mounted and dismounted Attack, death, fortify, etc.
Camel Corps - A European Camel variant to open the camel line to the Europeans. Basically a trooper in European dress with a pith helmet.
Mongol War Camel - Ah ha... now we get to one of the other little goodies I've been working on... A Bactrian Camel model... It hasn't been quite as successful as the Indian Elephant, but I'll get there... never fear... Anyway, this will feature a Mongolian rider with two big drums slung on each side of the saddle... Pretty cool... very unique.
Achaemenid War Camel - I don't know if this really falls under Achaemenid or Seleucid since the unit looks VERY Greek... Basically it's based on a picture of a model I found of the Persian Royal Camel cavalry used at the Battle of Issus against Alexander... It's the only Camel model I've ever seen with a tower on it, so it'll definitely be pretty unique... given the very Western look, this could also work very well as a generic European/Mediterrenean Camel replacement. Not sure if the camel is Bactrian or Dromedary though...
The Mongol War Camel may be followed with some somewhat more generic Bactrian camels... to give the Mongols and other Asians some Horsemen/Cavalry replacements..
And that's it... don't expect to see most of these any time soon......
