Dubbed, Or Subtitled?

Subtitles all the way. It's impressive how much we lose in the dubbing. Most of jokes disappear for instance. That's especially true in the British films where the humour is sharp and clever.
We lose much less in subtitled version. It's certainly a matter of habit. But anyway, once you're used to, it's not anymore a problem, even in the case you don't understand a thing about the language like in the case of movies in cantonese (HK).

In most of films today, the bad guy is a French speaker. If you see "Mission : Impossible", "Godzilla", "Catwoman" or "Matrix Trilogy" dubbed in French, then you lose all the good jokes made by the bad guys.Zeekater said:

I saw Hero today, and the subtitles weren't distracting at all. Dubbing would have destroyed it as a movie.

I'm definatley for subtitles. Without them, other countries are deprived of Britain's amazing comedic style.
On the DVD for Monty Python & The Holy Grail, there are two Scenes dubbed in Japaneese with english subtitles. They're HORRIBLE!!! The entire French Castle scene looses it's edge without English. Especialy the bit about:
"You silly English types."
"Then what are you?"
"I'M FRENCH! Why else would I have this outrageous accent?"
^If you try to give a japaneese man a French accent, it just doesn't work.

I always prefer to see the original version of movies.
I understand french and english perfectly so I get to see numerous movies from numerous countries.
Other than that, I see Italians, Germans, Spanish and Mexican movies from time to time and I always prefer subtitles.

SUBTITLES!!! This makes me so mad
Not that any of you would understand...
I read the subtitles really quickly without having to change my eye position, so the extra effort is no problem. Besides, consevative idiots generally can't dub for their life.
EDIT: I like it better when the argument's name is "Dubbed or Subbed". It sounds so much catchier.

I think the best example for me was Legend of the Drunken Master. I spent ages trying to turn on original language, but with subtitles to get around the horrible dubbing, but to no avail. I compared that to all the Police Story films i saw with subtitles - the film needs to be kept in original form for artistic sake i reckon, let alone that it sounds so much better.

If I know the original language, I prefer it without either.
What annoys me with most subtitling is that they show the texts too long - I invariably end up reading them at least twice, which makes it a bit hard to follow dialogue.

The whole idea of acting is using the expression of the body and voice simultaniously.
Apart from typical kid's movies, I don't get the point of dubbing. It's simply very bad, even when it is done good.

Subtitled are even worse than dubbed, because they are often much shorter sentences.
So I prefer dubbed when the movie is not in English or in French.
If it's English or French, then I want NO subtitle and NO translation.
The voices matches a lot better the character (in Star Trek NG, Picard, and especially Worf, don't have the right voice at ALL in French), you don't lose the jokes.
Subtitles distract me, and to learn a foreign language, it's better not to have the subtitles.

Imagine you watch starttrek, but you do not understand Englsih too well.
Subtitles are even worse than dubbing. French dubbers are usually good, so the movement of the lips is not so strange. You usually don't really notice differences. But you lose some parts in the translation (like joke). But with subtitles, are they are usually way shorter than the initial spoken text, you lose even more.
So, if I understand the language (ie French, English), keep it in original version. If I don't, I prefer dubbing over subtitles.

I think it depends on the situation. Dubbing can be done well. The American version of "Princess Mononoke", for example, was excellently done. Of course, with animation it's that much easier because it doesn't jar so much when the voice and mouth don't match perfectly.
Of course, though, I have to vote for subtitles, because I write them for a living!
