DuneWars: Battle for Arrakis

I've always like the Alec Newman version of Paul Atreides...:)
Just a what if: if Mahdi gets founded by another player, do we have to restart?

I would say, yeah, we lose and have to restart (or play a different scenario). But it shouldn't be that hard to beeline Jihad and found Mahdi, at least at Monarch difficulty level.

Paul gathered his generals for meeting...
"We need to expand!" he said. Silence was the answer and only one general, one the most aggressive general, said "I gotta Plan!".
Silence was the answer, but also movement, to holo-projector screen where was shown all holographic map of surrounding lands. "Tleilaxu..." - said Paul, and got immediate answer - "Yes, Sir!" from few of generals.. Another minute of silence was broken by aggressive bully general, when he said : "Indeed sir! And we need that land too!" . He pulled tumbler and colorful dots started to blink over the projector map.
"- You see that red one, Sir? There diamonds, Sir. We need them, Sir."
" - Leave me alone!" said Paul. " I need to plan my Jihad!!!!!!!! "
Generals left the hall in the moment, leaving Paul blinking on map projector with blinking colorful dots....

Turn 40 - Dot City Appointment
Spoiler :

Next 13 turns were boring digging Arrakis Habitation tech , building mine for good yield, and 2 soldiers.

Turn 53 - Arrakis Habitation finished and we go straight for Arrakis Plantation through Exploration and Desert Trade.
Spoiler :

"You may enter" - said Paul, " come in, sit down, have a cup of Caladanian Tea"
"Yes Sir" - mumbled 2 soldiers and with confused look took their seats.
"Its very important matter to us" - continued Paul... - " Tleilaxu control spreading in red sector, and we cant lose resources which red sector can provide to us.... you are young and brave. I am sure You will success. I need you to make sweep through land, scouting, and ensure safety for our citizens and engineering team between red sector and Arrakeen. Hurley you should camp on mesa at north-east of Red Sector, and you, Dean, sweep southern desert border and move little by little through it to Tleilaxu border. Is that clear?"
"Yes, Sir!" both answered in same moment.
"Ok then, take your tea and depart Now!!!!!!" said Paul, and soldiers nodded and moved out.

Dean's and Hurley's departure, turn 53.

Hurley's squad took position and built camp, fogbusting surrounding lands. Turn 58.

Dean's squad moving through exotic plants that grow on rocky terrain on Arrakis.

civ4screenshot0133.jpg

Turn 62 is very important one , and have really big amount of events.
Summary:
We finished researching Exploration. Next is Desert Trade.
Settler is done. Sent to Red Sector. Next is Thopter - for fast movement of troops, exploration and saving our trapped soldier.
Worker done building Insect Farm. Sent to Red Sector.
Spoiler :
civ4screenshot0138.jpg

Wooooo! Al-Yasannah is founded at Red Sector, and started building monument asap. Turn 67. Dean's squad will sequre it for now, Hurley team will remain with their camp on mesa. Thopter done by Turn 68 en-route to Other side of Tleilaxu borders, to save our lost soldiers squad. In Arrakeen another settler building started. Worker arrived to Al-Yasannah at turn 68, 1 turn after founding it, and started to build well 1N from the city. Tleilaxu capital already advanced 3rd ring so we have time till they pop next one, and now should prioritize culture there. That will be decent blocker city.
Spoiler :
civ4screenshot0140.jpg

Turn 74-76
Desert Trade tech is done. Next is Desert Plantation. Our improvements are improving hehehehehe. Turn 75 our capital pop 3rd culture ring. Our Soldier is saved by Thopter and being transported to Al-Yasannah. Turn 76 - Worker finish well and move to border mesa to build a mine, city start to grow better.
Spoiler :
civ4screenshot0147.jpg

Final state and suggestions with site map inside spoiler.
1. Thopter sent to scout Tleilaxu around.
2. There is some land on NE from our capital, settling it using thopter may be wise as soon we settle key cities on our landmass.
3. Blue city - there is not desert but some sneaky pass. Requires scouting.
4. I suggest to settle Purple city to ensure our block for Tleilaxu. But cyan is awesome too. If Purple then Dean goes to defend it (Hurley's overseeing (fogbusting) will be usefull still), if Cyan then Hurley's squad should be a garrison.
5. I think next queue is soldier then worker. Worker is very important for capitol and 3rd city. May be 2 of them even.
6. should we get wells upgrade (+1 water) at Desert engeneering before beelining jihad?
7. Jihad beeline thats it - it will provide both culture and units.
8. Scytale following same tech path as we are. (optimal). He adopted Slavery at turn 67.
9. I didnt researched Defence Tactics. We may do that now, and probably should, and we may leave it as it is and wait for Bladesmans/Jihaddists (MW). Kinda offence is best defence isnt it. They are cheap and have str 6.

Great write ups, guys. I enjoyed reading them. I like the fact that the Atreides guards still make time for tea! :D

Is it worth going for the Aql Monument in Arrakeen? It will take 18-20 turns by the look of it. The trouble is as Slvynn says we really need another worker for the third city.

I think we should beeline Jihad straight away. I can see the point about Desert Engineering, but seeing as we don't have Defense Tactics for Infantry we are going to be vulnerable until we get those Mahdi Zealots at Jihad.

Another wonder worth considering might be the Oracle of Hajra at Fanaticism - I find it pretty cheap for a free technology.

Great idea !
Yes, and thats not comes into a conflict with worker production.
I'd take or DE for it or Education. Education is quite powerfull and will give us both sci and culture boost. (that will need Stillsuits pre-researched, but thats cheap tech anyways)

By the way how do you place the dot maps using BUG. I tried ALT-S but that just places labels. There doesn't seem to be a simple list of BUG keyboard shortcuts anywhere.

Edit: Nevermind, found it Ctrl-X to show the strategy layer and Alt-X to place/remove dots. Nice.

I'd suggest a straight beeline for Jihad, rather than stopping for desert engineering.

If we do that, we would probably pick up the oracle, which is also GPP points I assume, so we don't need to worry about missing the Aql Monument. At higher difficulties we can't normally manage it, but we probably can here, particularly since we'll be getting Fanaticism earlier than most factions.

We could try to use it to grab desert engineering or (if we set things up right), we could get combat ornithopters (hawk thopters are nice anyway) and try to use the oracle to snag air power early on, I don't think it has many pre-reqs.
That would be huge. Falcon thopters in the early game? Devastating!

Try to explore the surrounding islands too, search for more good city spots.

Will play when I get back tonight. I've never been able to build the Aql Monument in Monarch (always beaten by the AI). I vote for Purple city.

Still i think Education is best Oracle pick - it provides very nice boost and very good civic for us. With Science bonus it will be easier to tech Ornithopters by our own. More culture means that we have chance to capture by culture that windtrap at Al-Yasannah

Ornithopters is great idea, but really - not THAT necessary cause we will have Mahdi Zealots. MZs also not cause war weariness, afaik, so cheap str 6 unit is better than hi exp expensive flying str 5 one, at least against BTl, who share with us landmass.

Ah, and our rooster:

1. Ahriman
2. Slvynn
3. AnotherPacifist // now
4. Deliverator.
5. Open slot - we accept people.

Yeah, Purple city is best. Cyan should be just right after.
I think 4-5 cities will be good gentleman's set to start with.

Blue should be scouted, but i think there can be nice city as well, there is not al ldesert, as i mentioned before, there is sneaky 1 tile pass.

I've never been able to build the Aql Monument in Monarch (always beaten by the AI).

I have, at Emperor, but you need to start it will before turn 80!

So lets go for the Oracle.

Also: lets drop to 20 turn rounds now that there is some actual action.

I'm happy with education. But what are the tech costs? Picking the tech with the higher cost is often helpful.
Purple and cyan in either order.

Edu is pretty expensive i think. Not less than Ornithopters i think. (i am not sure, cause on job now)

Minor correction: MZ does not have any support cost, but it does cause war weariness. I was not able to find a way to avoid war weariness for an individual unit.

Ah great , but that even better - no support cost means we just can spawn them with all that hammers and sink world with them.
That will suffice, throw few tens of those, about a ten suspensor transports and suspensor gunships for cover and we can "beeline" victory :)

81. Settler done, sent to purple spot. Dean moves back. Start another worker in Arrakeen
82. We meet Archduke Armand Ecaz, who already has Defense Tactics. Maybe we'll trade Desert Plantation to him for that (since it's a prereq for Fanaticism).
83. Our thorpter espies Ecaz territory just south of us. Kuriya is founded on purple spot.
84. Al Yassanah finishes monument, start water cache.
85. We meet the Bene Gesserit, who can't trade anything or OB.
86. uneventful.
87. Desert plantation is in, go for faith next.
88. Uneventful.
89. Worker done in Arrakeen, start Greenhouse. Worker goes to work on cereal.
90. Uneventful
91. Ecaz wants Desert Plantation, no but we'll trade it for Defense Tactics (prereq for Fanaticism).
92. Aql Monument built somewhere else. Al Yassanah's culture expand
93. Uneventful.
94. Imperial founded in Cave of Tears (Ecaz).
95. Start barracks in Al Yassanah. We meet Erlin Malky.
96. Water Cache finishes in Al Yassanah, start barracks
97-98, uneventful.
99. Faith done, fanaticism next (20 moves). Adv Defense Grid done somewhere else. (I think the lack of stone is a big hindrance in this game)
100. Uneventful.

We really need a city with stone. (I think we should bring our thorpter back and carry him to that NW corner of Al Yassanah and found directly a city on the stone). Sorry about the lack of pictures, I don't have the space in my account for this (I'm deleting old files as we speak).

Ok. This will need rebalancing then.... unlimited cheap mahdi fighters? Yowzahs!

We really need a city with stone.

Why? Stone does very little in this mod. Or do you mean nitrates?
Maybe I'm just used to not getting any of the wonders - on high difficulties its really not worth getting any, most wonders are overpriced, underpowered, or both. Hence why we're planning a redesign.

Sorry about the lack of pictures, I don't have the space in my account for this (I'm deleting old files as we speak).

Do what I did, create a photobucket account, and use that.

Screenshots are pretty key for this AAR I think; otherwise its pretty boring for anyone reading.

A final shot in particular is important. Where are we at? Ready to get Fanaticism, start building the oracle, teching Jihad, building up a Mahdi Fighter army and then storming the Tleilaxu?

Any good city sites discovered on outlying islands?

Also, I wasn't suggesting using the Oracle to get Combat Ornithopters free. I was suggesting researching combat ornithopters before the oracle was done, and trying to get Air Power free (very expensive, since its a tier2 combat tech, but relatively few pre-requisities).

Um, we can only build Infantry right now. I basically scouted around in a counter-clockwise fashion, with the aim of bring the thorpter back to our capital soon.
Stone makes building some wonders much quicker, but we already missed the 2 that really matter early on that use it.
I promise to upload more picture later on when there's more action. Right now it's just getting to know our neighbors and empty land isn't much to look at.

Duh you can just upload pictures at imageshack www.imageshack.us and link them as images,
Please do that , at least something.

Also i opened save and have few notes:
1. Hally should move back to mesa, i see no sense in him being fortified on this new tile. His job is fogbusting to remove threat of barbs inside our cluster.
2. I see no sense in barracks in Arrakeen for now - i thin k next should be mushtamal/settler.
3. Same for Al-Yasannah (mushtamal 1st)
4. Stone spot worth consideration for settling. Yes it provides some more usefull resources. Though to link them we'll need Dune Topography.

I haven't looked at the save, but are you sure Mushtamals are worth it? City health is reasonably high at this difficulty level, and we have multiple health bonuses, and the mushtamal is quite an expensive building.

But Deliverator, you're up, whenver you get a chance.

just look at the save You'll see.
Yep, our cities have major Health problem.

:wavey: Hello, I just found this thread. I would gladly join. I like the Dune books, but haven't played the mod yet
