Holland could make a better choice too.
I grew up in Holland, MI, graduated from Holland High. We were the Holland High Dutch and Woody the Wooden Shoe was our mascot. The school is now probably more Hispanic than Dutch.

That is the title of the country, not it's proper name (every country's name is composed of a title and a proper name, like "United States" and "America", respectively), which makes "Netherlands" be more suitable than "United Provinces", and this is specially so considering there has been a long time now that the Netherlands haven't been "United Provinces", but a kingdom.
Although around the time of his death (1584) they were calling themselves the 'Republic of the Seven United Netherlands'
Netherlands without 'the' sounds weird. And you don't really need the article "The" in front of Netherlands to know which country is being refered to. It's not like there's more the one Netherlands that is so world renowned.

The article is in front of it because it's plural, just like you say 'the United States' instead of just 'United States'.
In civ selection it would be AmericaYes, but in the civ selection screen it would probably be "United States" rather than "The United States".
Yes but the civ selection screen already uses The Inca, The Aztec, The Iroquois, and The Ottomans. What's the problem with it also using The Netherlands?
The current reports about the Dutch are confusing. This article implies that polders produce tulip, which is a resource that can be traded. That would require a new rule about improvements producing resources, and I'm not convinced about that.
It's also been reported more than once that the Dutch UU is Privateer which can be used to pillage cities for gold. Except that apparently pillaging and capturing cities is a function shared by most melee naval units. It also seems very unlikely for the Privateer to be the Dutch UU.
Personally I think the Dutch UU would still be a land unit, otherwise the Dutch would lose too much of their unique advantage if they are landlocked and without marshes nearby.
Maybe a Dutch pirate ship will just get more gains out of it, like the Songhai get more gains from barb camps. It's also been reported more than once that the Dutch UU is Privateer which can be used to pillage cities for gold.
