Can anyone put a civ to the trebuchet and perhaps a time period?
It may give us a clue as to what conquest scenario it might be in.
It sounds French, maybe there is a war of the roses scenario?

Can't put a civ to it, but the trebuchet was a medieval seige weapon that had a heavy counterweight at one end and a REALLY BIG ROCK:eek: at the other. Basically, a bunch of guys with ropes tied the REALLY BIG ROCK:eek: down until King Bob :king: from whereverland gave the command to fire. Then they would release the REALLY BIG ROCK:eek:. The counterweight would go down, the REALLY BIG ROCK:eek: would go up, and anything between Point A and Point B would be history. The objective of the attacker was to bring down as much of the castle as he possibly could, while the objective of the defender was to GET THE HELL AWAY FROM THE REALLY BIG ROCK:eek:!!!

Along with throwing REALLY BIG ROCK:eek:'s, the ancient Mongolians under Genghis Khan used trebuchets to throw bodies infected with disease, the first known instance of biological warfare. Later, in the 12th through early 14th centuries (the peak of Feudalism), feudal lords would hurl dead cows over castle walls in much the same manner.

About the word trebuchet sounding French, it most likely originated during the Norman invasion of England by William the Conqueror during the early 11th century.

The Normans spoke Norman-French a combo of Norwegian and French. No wonder English is such an intersting language.

During civil wars, if a new civ appeared was it just 1 city that had to start form scratch or was it a number of cities with buildings etc. It would certainly make things interesting

Half of the empire would become the rebel civ. If it were just one city, the rebellion might only take a tundra town:crazyeye:...

Actually the Normans or the "Vikings" who settled in France were of Danish origin.
Norwegians turned around northern Scotland and into the Irish sea where they plundered Iona and founded Dublin or Waterford.

But you are right it is through this invasion that many French-Latin words movend onto England and replaced some celtic or German words. Military and feudal terms especially, of course !

These sources (and others) show Rollo, who conquered Normandy, was born in Norway.

I think the confusion is because Rollo was also referred to as a "Dane" and because Demark ruled southern Norway at the time. I also don't know how much difference there is beween Danish and Norwegian, especially in the 9th century. I'm betting it is very little, if any.

you are most likely both right, as the prayer of the day was delievery us from the fury of the northmen, i don't think most european peasants were to concerned if you were danish, norwwegian or swedish- you were a viking.

If you examine carefully the screen shots they put up on the official civ 3 site you will see that they have a unique maya and inca unit (2 civs). The pictures of the 2 people are of Gilgamesh and Mursilis. They represent the Sumerians and Hittites. The other 2 screenshots are of and Enkidu warrior, sumerian, and of a trebuchet, which will probably be an intermediary between catapult and cannon. How do i know this? Psychic powers and if you read the bottom of the webpage when you go over the picture of the screenshot it tells you what the name of the screenshot is. so thats 4 civs. Inca, maya, Sumerian and hittites. The other four are a mystery. So now when you guys are trying to guess the new civs you just need to guess 4

has anybody deduced the other 4 civs? I was hoping that maybe the Nubians or Eithiopians/Abyssians would make it to the game the 2nd largest continent on the planet having only 3 civs is a little lonely. Doesn't pay much respect to historical significance of Africa either.

If they're going to put out a Mesopotamian campaign then they might also have a Assyrian civ because they were very important back in the 2nd to 1st millenium bc and actually it was under an Assyrian, Sargon, that Mesopotamia was united.(one of my archaeology professors at Stony Brook University is a world renown expert on Mesopotamia, Prof. Elizabeth Stone, it's crazy-she can read and write cunieform. Thats tough!)

I'm truly amazed.

Here we are in a Civ3 only thread and there's simply endless whinning and moaning about how lame Civ3 products are.

If that's not strange enough, all this massive sobbing is the result of possibly spending a measily $30.

$30?????

My goodness people, when was the last time you had a date?

You've said what a lot of us are thinking :goodjob:

@ Trumpeteer
Thanks but I do know what a trebuchet is.
btw theres no need to shout....
 I'M NOT BLIND!! :col:

A trebuchet is a medieval catapult too put it simply. It uses a counterweight to hurl stones at castles. It was truly a beast at around 20 ft or higher for the structure.

Wow. Been a while since I checked out the Civ 3 boards. Haven't played it once since Galactic Civilizations came out a couple months ago (AWESOME game by the way). Good news on the new expansion. I'll sure I'll buy it as I'll be sick of Gal Civ by fall and will need something new. WhoooHooooo!

Hmmmm maybe they should get the 1.21f patch out for the European/UK version first before they release another buggy expansion.

I doubt it will be as buggy as PTW because Conquests will have a few hundred beta testers. PTW had only a few dozen.
