Joe, i just got off an earth game as england in SINGLE PLAYER(important, this strat wont work in MP, unless someone better than me can fine tune it).

It started out as me trying to fine tune my start (if you must know, i somehow had this idea about building roads much earlier, doesn't work out, lose out on worker techs), When i had an idea. Just for fun, i was going to try and play a game, not to win, but to a. prioritize elizabeths stats and b. try a no war game

You think this is impossible? I say it's easy. Remember, it's single player, so there is no fear of a big rush at the beginning(this would be perfect if somehow y ou could get the humans in europe/russia not to attk for MP)

So i started a new game, built
    city 1 - worker->settler->galley->settler->settler->settler
    city 2 - .......................settler->settler.......................
    city 3 - ...................................................................settler
    researching -
Agriculture, AH, sailing, masonry, wheel, bronze, iron...

(joe is looking at this and saying too himself- too much of a growth stunt-too peaceful- bear with me)

settle york - nottingham - newcastle(yes, i didn't follow my own advice the first time, this is better tho) - 2 english mainland cities - ireland city*may want to edit this for 2 cities in ireland-buit i prefered one so that york isn't stifled and can be a powerhouse in the endgame*. Build settler in nottingham to fill in the blanks if you want- reason notting ham is not 1S was culture from germany.

once all those are complete, build your cities. GET A LIGHTHOUSE IN ALL YOUR CITIES - maybe can wait for nottingham. Build another worker for nova scotia. Build libraries early.

Now, procede to do a modified specialist economy- you want to use the surplus food to grow, but also want to take advantage of your financial trait for water tiles, but also want your specialists.start out focusing more on working tiles to get more pop - pop fast=key - early on, while later putting more and more scientists in until you get representation, where you should be maxed out/almost(switch to caste system when you are ready for a third scientist. Focus on growing your cities - theatres are a MUST- the culture slider is your freind- you are running specialists, and lots of gold - also don't forget health improvements, harbor comes in useful since you have so many fish. as you go on you will be able to take the science slider down and still tech at a reasonable rate, all the while stockpiling gold for universal sufferage redcoat rush,,,

late game- get representation ASAP. and out tech everyone, then go for redcoats As soon as you get redcoats- BANG! - use universal sufferage/nationhood, depending on the situation to take over europe, which by now has full improvements and towns. and- ahem - longbowmen.*you may notice i didn't do this in the screenshot game - was practicing on how i would develoup a specialist economy

You will be getting a LOT of great scientists - use your first 3 to build acadamies in your best cities, then join the rest to your main science city, i used one for philosophy - keep AI on your side by not getting a religion AND closer to liberalism - remember they give one hammer each, so that may be one of your production cities as well (not a lot of production in the late game with 4 cities in england, but the beauty of this is you can use sufferage/nationhood to use the pop you have been guarding so jealously for redcoats.

If you ever need a quick tech, just let your citizens starve and put a few more scientists in - This city is runnin 9 great scientists and 12 scientists(just a little test to max research, and i'm not even at max pop)

aww cmon OCC, you answer his question but no comments? I know it's not perfect - but i want some fine tuning. What i said about it only being SP is a lie, its just a lot easier(lack of AI rush). I think it can transform into a good strat for when you have a good balance of players in europe(play the whole game but no one takes a city) or a good balance of players elsewhere (AI neighbors). Basically - it would work if a)the humans are not evenly distributed from europe-elsewhere and b) the game will continue to the late game

as to your england victory conditions...

    a) no war...always a big thing to accomplish on a huge map...win will be either diplomatic, cultural, or space race

    b) maximize traits ( financial/philosophical )

this reaks to me of going for the culture win.

your placement looks pretty good, I might try droping that third scandanavian city two west on the coast rather than the river, but it's not so bad their either.

you're right on with what you did and what your goals are...i could possibly help you fine tune some "turn or two strats"...didn't see slavery used, and that could be a huge early library/courthouse/etc benefit.

with using the slavery whips I might even try to go for a super fast education rush...assuming you're playing on noble you "might" and this is near impossible but "might" pull off the old "education slingshot" with the oracle. near impossible even at noble, and with 18 civs not likely.

you did well with your specialists as far as academies, etc...one suggestion is the switchover once you get to representation to artists/priests.

make sure you get a lot of religeons which you should...at least izzy's budist/hindu pop early, your confucianisn, your taoism, christianity normally pops in europe too, you might even get islam.

adopt free religeon asap to help with diplomacy, gift extra resources or trade for more gold.

all in all looks good under the conditions you've put on yourself.

anything you had a specific question on that I missed let me know

Thanks for the tips joe, couple points -

as you noticed, i didn't use slavery much that game - useful in the beginning, but water tiles only give you 2 food, and by the later game you really need to get pop early. this is a cumulative strat the early game builds for the late game victory, not the other way around

regarding free religion - 2 advantages- science + happiness and diplomacy. Science, is, of course, good, and some may say it's worth it no matter what, but running some huge science cities anyway, in most circumstances you can get more by running pacifism. Happiness limit is usually not a problem if you are keeping up with your building... I managed to go running theatres(very, very useful), colluseums, and culture slider and rarely brought it above 20 percent, and i was able to search calender a lot later(may have noticed i dont have the dye hooked up in the screenshot, bad idea, jujst didnt see it, good especially cause you need theatres anyway). Interesting thing about diplomacy - isabella founded hiduism, inca founded buddism, greece founded jewish fairly late, egypt got christianity I founded confucianism, taoism(used GS), some random civ founded islam, but by then hinduism had gone so far that the only civ of the 14 i knew was not hindu was egypt(like i said, no war) - anyway, rather than going for cultural which would have been easy, i decided that it was perfect for diplomatic(egypt was in second place, so i built the UN, the religious boost for having hinduism gave at least plus four in every civ. NO negativs(nice thing is- no declare war on freind). Everyone hated egypt because it was the only christian civ, and i easily breathed a sigh of releif to get the win.

so, free religion - depends on the situation, mostly on diplomacy. Also what i like about this strat is you are free to go pretty much anywhere you want for a victory - diplomatic, cultural, time, even domination(by the time you have riflemen, you are almost at communism/state property - go pwn some noobs :).

built globe theatre in city with largest food surplus.

K Joe as I mentioned in the game, here are my thoughts as how you could change the map for the new civs.

1.You should be able to include all the civs except the Celts, England is a bit small for 2 civs to start on.

2.Assuming Carthage goes in north west Africa, (below Spain), they have no horses for their uu. I suggest horses be placed somewhere.

    3. If Carthage is in NW Africa and Zulu is in South Africa, the Mali have no chance i think of winning the game. Maybe you could give them some kinda of bonus for their bad spot. (iron/copper/better production etc...)

    4. If the Ottoman's are in turkey, then greece has even more problems. Despite their lack of production, room to expand and rome, it seems that they are trapped in Athens until iron comes then drop on egypt. Athens will also be vulnerable to a chariot rush for the ottomans. They need a bonus to help them.

5.Korea, they seem to be in a bad spot. They may prevent china from rushing the mongols, but other then that i think they're screwed. Japan naturally expands into Korea and the get copper, Korea gets iron. Korea may be protective but so are china and japan.

    6. China and Japan are no longer financial and organzied which will hamper their expansion in asia. That has been replaced by the protective trait, which im not to keen on. I suggest maybe not putting the protective trait in, I c it as kinda of useless.

7.Persia is now completely different and one of the most feared civs now (i think) with the Charismatic and Imperialistic traits. Since they aren't creative anymore Cyrus will have to wait longer to get horses or move him cap onto the hill. The new traits spell trouble for India. India already suffers from lack of production and jungle infestation and they are defencesless.Persia probably wont even need immortals to take them anymore, just archers. India needs some kind of boost or persia needs to be toned down a bit.

8.Russia is no longer financial. Will people be able to survive with that, cause you need to expand as russia but not being financial will hurt russia's economy alot. Imperialistic isnt bad for them specially with cossacks :) but i think russia should remain creative and financial.

9.The Zulu have south africa I assume. If that is the case, they will have copper and iron for their uu. With their uu the could probably kill egypt easily.
Im not suggesting you give egypt metals, but we ahve to think of a way for egypt to survive with horses in the early part. If we dont then Egypt wont be a power civ anymore i think.

    10. The vikings i think will be a new power civ. Being aggressive for unit promotions, their uu being better then orginal macemen with 10% city attack and amphibious (perfect for taking england or any naval invasion), financial for working the coastal tiles, and having iron and copper in the north. And since rome cant get to northern europe so easy, the vikings will be a new rome in the medevial era. what do think about that!

    11. Poor Germany, that's all i can say about them. They have to watch out for a warrior rush from France and Rome. They start with a scout, their cap isnt on the coast so they cant expand northward, the vikings are now in the north. Russia will probably be more warmongering if they are imperialistic.
Germany is probably (with the changes) one of the hardest/worst civs to be. Not to mention Fredrick isnt creative anymore, so France will win culture battle.

For my suggestions to help Germany. I would give them back the creative trait. They dont have time to build culture buildings in new cities being surrounded by everyone. Give them a warrior to start with so they dont have to build on the wheat. Im not sure if there's much else to do to help them.

I think I adressed all the new changes to the earth map. Feel free to comment on these suggestions.

I leave Thursday for about 2 and half weeks on vaction so I wont be online for that time :( I'll get to experience what withdrawlal feels like.

I've nailed a single player strategy for Persia finally. I don't know why I wasn't able to do it in the past. It's pretty simple and the exact order doesn't matter as long as you follow solid civ strategy in general.

Settle one square north. Hook up the horses and go to war to the west with a horde of Immortals with Flanking promotions (60% withdraw with Flanking II).

Found a city at the Tigris/Euphrates mouth and one on the plains hill south of the lake and to the west of the stone. You may have to capture an Arabian city and then raze it because the computer tends to place it elsewhere. Finish off Arabia.

Repeat with Egypt. Research Code of Laws for courthouses so you don't over-expand your empire before your economy can handle it.

Repeat with India. You'll have twice the number of cities of any other civ and generally at least one, possibly 2 holy cities for income. You'll have some monster commerce/research cities with Thebes and the Tigris/Euphrates city and some great production cities with Persepolis and the plains hill city to the west.

I've found that on Monarch it's a solid win and on Prince my goal was to have 1.5x the score of my nearest rival.

    ====

For Multiplayer it won't necessarily work. First, because of the proximity of India Persia absolutely has to build a warrior first and might need to send the scout over as a sacrifice. With a scout instead of a real defender if India gets a warrior placement on the Persian side they could actually take Persepolis before it is defended.

Second, a real player is rapidly going to build something besides archers to defend against Immortals. Even with 60% withdraw they will lose a lot trying to take down anything but archers or warriors.

Still, the basic premise of beating Arabia and Egypt to the prime middle east settlement spots and/or taking them away from them should work just fine.

will be there thursday joe, but during weekend i'm outta town.

Joe, is spain doable with someone in rome who knows what he is doing? I want to know before i try and work on it :)

EDIT - about teh new map - remember! - we dont have to release it right away... we can have beta testers if it comes to that - if it DOES become popular, and firaxis doesnt make it - we need to make sure it works, so people dont have to get a new map every 5 days, ect.

Love playing earth. Here's some of my thoughts on the start of the game in multiplayer.

    European Civs:

Rome: Build on the Iron for better defense against early rushes, then tech straight for iron working while building a lot of warriors and maybe a couple fishing boats depending on the pressure. If you can survive the initial rushes, take out the biggest threat(s) with praets and try to negotiate with the rest. If the enemy rushed, his defenses will be thin.

Germany: Build one southeast on the copper, and after grabbing the hut to the southeast, fortify your scout in your city and pray that rome or france don't rush you with a fortuitously placed warrior and win. Germany's only real weakness is the lack of a warrior at the start of the game, so if you can survive that crank out axes faster than anyone, capture Rome, and then Paris... and then Athens, and Madrid, and London, and Moscow... etc. Obviously, get hunting and build some spears early or your axes will perish - but that first one or two axes should be out before any chariots.

Spain: I have two or three different places to build with Spain depending on the player countries. If Rome is not a problem, you can build on the coast one tile south and two west, and rush France with warriors to cover his horses, and then chariots. By building on the coast you give yourself another coastal city to build a navy, and the possibility of squeezing a third city in between Paris and Madrid next to Iron on the coast. Or, you can build on the horses one tile southwest at the start and get chariots out a bit faster to try and attack Rome/Germany. German axers die to Spanish Chariots. This gives you some bargaining power with Germany if he takes out Rome - and you can split europe in half and go for England with your three coastal production cities. Bring some triremes.

    The Americas:

    Inca:

Build on the coast two tiles west, build a worker, and research polytheism for a shot at Hinduism and then mining and then priesthood and start building the oracle while mining the gold. Time everything to finish building the oracle after you get Bronze and Pottery so you can use it to discover metal casting. You should intermittently be building a settler to settle next to the grassland copper in the south for faster colossus after you discover sailing to connect it and finish the forge in Cuzco. Then, you have fast Colossus and metal casting and sailing, and can start colonizing Argentina pronto. Don't worry about early monarch - go straight for civil service next for the extra science output, then feudalism.. then... nukes?

    America:

You have to deny the Aztecs copper, so go send some archers to sit on top of it. Then get swords and kill him completely. Or something like that.

    Asia:

Japan: Build Kyoto, get bronze working and sailing, and start choking china preparing it for incorporation into the great Japanese empire. You have to attack China asap because he will quickly catch up and surpass in production thanks to the massive resources in China, but at the start Kyoto is better.
