Numidian Cavs might be the better option if Axemen cometh. I actually have soft spot for Numidian Cavs, I hardly ever get to build them for some reason. Not quite as strong as a elephant but able to get Sentry straight away with a barracks, I'll play it by ear.

It's 4:50pm Friday here, time to brave the traffic and let the weekend begin

    Until work tomorrow

I'll report in about 18 hours.

I know what you mean. I used to NEVER build HA's until recently. In my last game I got boxed in by the Native Americans. who is worse to conquer than them right? well apparently their one weakness is horse archers . think about it. all they make are archers and their UU, and 1-2 spearmen at most. so by the time you invade them, you've taken over at least 1/2 of theri territory before they can get enough spearmen to defend themselve. I say we get a nice sized stack of Numidian's and a clean up stack of Cats/elephants with a couple of axes and Swords.

Also, my internet at my aparment is down for a while, so could the next person who plays post a good comprehensive selection of screen shots of our territory and the AIs? and maybe some of our more important cities. I'd really appreciate it :D. I am curious on the number of cities Pericles has. if i remember correctly numidians get +50% against melee right? if so, i say lets use them with avengence and conquer our pretty little island and then REX/cottage spam the hell out of it. I'd say 3 numidians for every city pericles has should be more than enough to take him out, or play it by ear and the power graph. we dont really need to be greater than them in power or even pretty close to whoop their butts.

and one thing about when we're attacking, i think we should also try to leave our numidians 2 squares from the capital because I believe, though not even 90% sure, that they wont whip as much if you aren't actually next to their city. and I would go for a stable first in our cities producing troops. 12-13 level two numdians MUCH greater than 1 level one numidians IMO. we can then either take the peaceful route and eventualyl conqueur pacal when we feel like it and have a much larger tech advantage, or wipe him out with our army of experienced numidians + fresh troops.

I was kind of rushed when I played last night. Unless 50 plays before I get to it tonight, I'll put up a better assortment of screenshots when I get home.

I had a slight problem with the save last night, it was only 119KB instead of 160KB

I've downloaded it again, this time I hope it's right.

I'll play after I've finished work and will post tomorrow.

Is anybody good at combat calculations?
    What's better Flanking II + combat 1
or combat 1 + Shock?. For battles with Num Cavs against spears.
Intuition would suggest combat 1 plus shock.

I think in good odds battles, shock would be better, in bad odds battles, flanking II would be better.

And now, I'll imageflood, one for each of our cities, plus the northern border, plus the southern border, plus the power chart, which I slacked off on.

It's hard to see, but there's barb warriors 1E and 2SW, and a barb archer 1S of the city

Yeah I ran it through the combat calculator we'd have roughly:
8% chance to win and 30% retreat with combat 1 + shock + Flanking I
and about 3% chance to win plus 50% retreat with combat 1 + Flanking I and II
That's against a fortified spear on grass with 50% culture.
Is the Phalanx +100% vs chariots only or all mounted units?

it's vs chariots. HA's are a huge step up from chariots since they also get bonuses vs cats. I think settling thapus was a mistake that we can learn from. We dont have enough workers to work it and it's just a strain on our economy right now. I think we shouldn't settle any more cities cause I'm pretty sure our economy is in the dumps right now. we can keep making the settlers and send them to the city sites to settle when we are ready, but settling more cities like thapus that can't be improved due to worker and barbarian constraints won't help us i think.

my internet is back up. my roommate sent out millions of porn emails when he wasnt paying attention apparently so they blockd our internet. unfortunately, my fuse for my room blew literally RIGHT after we got our internet back on . I have to call my apartment people to have an electrician come in and fix it (it's happened before. can't even reset it or anything). I should be up and running monday or tuesday at the latest.

-hippo should be building a granery first shouldnt it?
-utica needs to grow two more pops and switch work from the pig to the 2 cottages and a cottage that's going to be built on the FP.
-if iron city is having such problems with barbs, it should build 2-3 more archers or even cats to have sent into the fray south to draw away the barbs. building one cat may be a good idea because it could gain xp and also weaken the barbs for our archers.

-my preference with unit upgrades is units that will be in charge fo destroying troops don't get flanking. what are the chances for a Combat I+II and shock? also remember we'll probably only have 3 spearmen at the most. what are the odds vs CGI archers and combat I phalanx or w/e the UU is called?

also, i think we my have expanded so large that we might have to wait for a medieval war or eliminate pacal right after pericles so he doesnt expand into area of all the razed cities.

    Here's the save.
Bit pushed for time at the moment so I'll pass on the screenshots and detailed turn report. (sorry guys)

    The short of it is:
    No losses to barbs.
Pushed a picket line of archers down south to bust fog, barbs have settled down now anyway as they've got a city down near the bronze pig site.
Researched HBR and are about 3-4 turns away from Aesthetics. (thought we might want to have a go at GL or Parth).
Didn't get any elephants built, nor any Numidian's (had to wait for border pop for horses).
Had to settle a city just south of carthage, it's coastal but needs a bit of work.
Confucianism spread to us, we're now in anarchy.
Pericles demanded Ivory on turn 116 if I remember rightly, he doesn't have HBR yet and last time I checked he would trade HBR for the remainder of Aesthetics, so he's a not researching it.
We can trade our clams and fish to Pacal for gold, for some reason he won't take just 1. That might be a good move IMO as a) he's expansive b) our healthiness is in good shape thanks to Zargon's work on the random event earlier c) we can easily get fish back and d) who doesn't like gold.
We're in a culture war with Pacal for the pigs at the horses/marble site, but we should get the pigs soon as I did a whip/chop on a the monument and a library there (looks like he's only got a monument).
I've set granaries up in most cities as I think we've still got a lot of whipping to do.
We have a GS in Carthage, he would bulb compass or we could use him for an academy.
That's about all I can remember.

I can post a few pics tomorrow MrFelony if you want. Unless someone else wants to.
The economy is in pretty good shape I think.

My vote is for peaceful expansion. We have a lot of land down South (sorry I didn't post a picture) As long as we stick to the coast and keep our cottage spam steady we'll have enough land for a Space race win without warring.

Although I'm fine with war, most of my SP games using a fractal map have had me wind up isolated.
We've got quite a few small cities at the moment.
Maybe we should fire the scientists at Carthage and Utica and start working mines, and whip from the other cities.

yeah, I'd say peaceful expansion is the way to go. We aren't really in a strong enough position right now to go to war.

So I'll let the ss' report for me mostly. I whipped a lot of infrastructure as well as a numidian HA. I built a 2nd numidian in the capital as well. hooked up the iron. had a run in with a swordsman in the south, lost one archer but mopped him up with the 2nd. a barbarian city is place perfectly for us in teh south as well. I started building the SoZ in the horse city while it's slowly growing. it'll be a pretty decent production city, and with the ivory it shouldnt take that long. and if we decide to stop building it,we'll at least get some gold for it. It's purpose is to also help us on the cultural fron there to make sure we keep the pigs. i didnt settle the settler in the souther area yet. i think the spot is probably still best but forgot to take a SS of it (typing up on a dif comp). i started exploring the AI's territory some more as well but apparently forgot to get a SS of that in my photobucket :/. I also canceled the ivory to pericles, and asked and received the gold from pacal for being such good friends. this next round should be pretty interesting.

    -whipped a lot of infrastructure
    -built a couple of numdians
-building SoZ in horse city for culture/money if we decide to not complete it
-canceled ivory to pericles, traded pig for sheep, asked for gold and received from pacal
-haven't founded the city in teh SE yet.
-haven't used GS for anything yet. we could use him for compass and then tech for caravels, but i prefer using him as an academy. problem is we have a great production capital, but not a great commerce one. I'm thinking bulbing is probably a good choice here.
-our economy seems to be picking up nicely. space race? or maybe diplo. i've been getting to many dominations recently

    Save?

Also, Utica & Hippo might be good candidates for an academy. Utica is better right now, but Hippo will eventually pass it. I haven't seen the cities since my turnset, so I don't know how developed each are.

I think we should place a city south of our marble city. It'll get the 3 initial trade routes from the great lighthouse, and it'll pick up the 10-14 unused tiles in there. Won't be a great long term city, but it'll be an ok city, and one that we don't really have to defend, outside of dropping a 1 unit garrison in there.

sorry, was a late night/early morning. we should def settle that at some point, but i think the stone city might be better just because it would shave off a lot of time from building walls, which will help us build our power and if we want to, build castles for the trade routes +25%:espionage: (just assuming it gives bonuses to building castles). do we want to build the GL in our capital? or do we want to put it in a city where we put the academy? i think the later would be the better option and with the marble it should ease the time it takes to produce it.
I'm pretty sure this is the save.

If we tried to pair up the academy and the great library, it would have to be in Utica. With only 7 production, it would take 25 turns. I'd think Utica would need a forge to pull it off, and that would make for 11 production with an engineer specialist, cutting the time down to 16 turns.
