Helloo!

I was shocked to find out that we have many seemingly caring people here on CFC.
Enemy Ace is not convinced, however. I am interested to find out just how selfless you lot are.
So with that in mind, I would be honoured if you could take a moment to answer my soul-searching round of quandaries.
It would be nice to think that in our callous android society, there is still those who would help a complete stranger.
Let’s find out how much milk of human kindness we have here on OT!

Here are my questions:

1.
You have money given to you be a friend/relative/whatever to buy a pie or something.
On the way to the mall, you are intercepted by a junkie woman and her kids. She begs for some money to feed her children.
Having spotted your cash, begins to sob and asks for some money…
But you only have enough to buy your errand.

What would you do?

2.
You are driving, and see a car that has went off the road. at the side of the road is a bunch of people.
They are wearing all the trappings of gansta rappers or what ever signifies a tough in your country.
They wave frantically and try to get you to pull over. They look distraught.

What would you do?

3.
An old woman trips and falls down the stairs across the street. You are late for an appointment.
If you miss this appointment, you will lose your job or the chance of one.
But would you take the time to help the old lady who is shivering on the pavement in shock, as no-one else is around to help.

What would you do?

4.
You see a group of thugs run up to an innocent man and start beating him to a pulp.
You are about to go to his aid, but you notice these ruffians have staves and weapons.
You could phone the cops, but this man might might be dead in minute.
Do you run up, confront the goons, and join the man in hospital or the morgue? Or ignore the incident?

What would you do?

5.
You accidently have witnessed a neighbour ruthlessly beating his children, under the guise of ‘discipline’.
This creep is breaking the law, and is unaware that you know his secret.
but when you meet this guy, he is always pleasant, putting on a face of normality.
Do you report this individual to the authorities, or keep treat it as not your business?

What would you do?

Tough questions, I know.
But I am really eager to know what your level of caring for others actually is.
Please be honest and don’t answer just to appear like a ‘good guy’ to your fellow posters.

Thanks for taking part. :)

1. If the food was for me, than I would. If it wasn't I probally still would and repay the person that gave me the money.

2. Ask them, if I could help.

3. Help the woman. You can always get another job.

4. I would first call the emergency forces. Afterwards I would visit him and his family.

5. I will take it to the authorities.

I don't see why anyone would not help people in need. I am not selfless, BTW. Please, do not think I am, because I am far from it.

well, Zarn, after all we know you're the good guy around here ;)

1. buy the pie ofcourse i know junkies they wouldnt buy food theyd buy more drugs.
2. stop and help ive been in car crashes and i know how it feels
3. help the old woman and hope they would do the same for my grandmother
4. well as this happened to me last week i would help the innocent man
5. report the man child beating is one of the lowest things someone can do

I'll buy the pie and give it to the Children. I want them to eat something, not inject/snort/smoke something. The best way to give is give stuff, not cash.

2.

What would you do?
Slow down to a 4 wheel stop, open the window and ask to the problem. Depending on what they want, I'll decide from then.

3.

The old lady comes first. If I am already late for an appointment as is, better be late for a good cause and do a good deed while I get the chance than just act like an ******* and lose both morally and physically. Also, the little old lady might turn out to be the owner of a huge factory just as she might be just a middle class housewife, meaning the favour can be repayed in more than one way.

4.

What would you do?
If I can get the hell out of there, I will, and when I am out of sight I will report the incident to the police.

5.

What would you do?
Confront him casually without going directly into the issue. I'll ask him something like what he thinks about "corporal punishment" as a means of education. If he gets violent or fails to realize his mistake, I will attempt to speak with the neighbour's spouse. If this doesn't work, I'll advise them to call the police while keeping casual track of what's going on. If after a certain period of time the violence doesn't stop, I'll tip the cops anonymously.

Clarify # 1 as to whether the food money is a gift to you, or a errand in trust (in whole or in part) to get food for the person he handed you the money.

clarify the force ratio in #4, and the availaility of 911 comunication.

The Enemy Ace is getting pretty philosophical lately...

I guess I wouldn't give her any money, we fortunately have a welfare system. Charity just tries to cover up the flaws of Capitalism. ;)

Help them. If they have a real problem I won't mind their stupid gangsta rapper clothes.

Help her, as painful as that may be for me. But legal problems aside I wouldn't feel right about not helping her.

Probably call the police. It's not helpful to him if I get beaten up as well. I would try to defend him if there was a real chance to succeed in it, which wouldn't be the case in the scenario you describe.

Hard question. In all the other example I'm sure what I would do, not so in this one.
But that is more because I'm not convinced if it's my business to interfere with him "educating" his children, and because I'm very reluctant to denounciate people.
Still if I had the impression that he'd go too far I would first talk to him about it and then, if he doesn't change it, take other measures.
Tough questions, I know.
But I am really eager to know what your level of caring for others actually is.
I'm not sure if your examples really cover the subject of caring for others, as I have described in the answers.
The only one that really covers it is in my opinion number 3, because there you have to make a choice between helping and your own benefit. In 4 it won't help at all, in 5 there may not be a problem, in 1 there are other measures. 2 is pretty self-evident.

@Lefty:

1.
The money is for an errand. And the item much needed.

4.
Typical late night situation, you may have to search for a phone. Or you may have a mobile.
But this man might be dead in a few minutes.

There're no junkie women with kids in Singapore... N.A.

2.

I can't really drive either... N.A.

Not sure. Depends on how badly I want the job.

Will probably just help her up, before making off. A few minutes of time won't hurt...

4.

Call the police. Shout for help. I'm not strong enough to face them but I've all these militarily-trained male Singaporeans around me, who're active reservists, as back-up...

There's really no place in S'pore w/o people milling around...

5.

Report it to the police and let them take care of it. We don't love our neighbours, in these parts.

Ah, but the fact that you care would motivate you to do something....

To be totally uncaring would be to walk away from each situation...non?

Use your imagination, man!
Oh well, you are honest, and that is good enough for me!
:)

I will answwer these questions thinking of Germany, so don't be surprised if things are a bit different from what an US citizen might say....

1: no. not in Germany. Actually, I would be temped to call the cops, because here, these women usually are members of organized gangs, and the children are slaves (no joke  )

2: call police, then get out, keep distance to my car small then distance to them.

3: yes, and if not it is a crime in Germany

4: cell phone, police, ring bells at houses, make a racket....

5: report him. that's what socail workers are for. If it doesn't help, there's the police, too. if that doesn't help - usually I am bigger and stronger, and I have little sympathy for garbage like that.... 'ever again and I am after you....'

1. I'd buy my food.

2. Probably approach very carefully, after trying to remember if I'd seen anything like this recorded as a con on local papers.

3. I would help her.

4. Telephone the police, and perhaps try to put some distance between them and myself before trying to distract them. It would possible depenmd on how well I knew the area - how well I'd be able to make good my escape if it came to that.

5. Treat it as none of my business.

Well yeah, but very few people (including very non-selfless ones) would do that.

1
Inform her of here rights, and help here call the socials service office. They would then get here money for food, apartment and so. Gee, do I love a socialistic country. :)

Ok, I’m abroad, I’d prob give here some food that I pay for with the case so to be sure it goes to food…

2
Pull over, and call 911 to get help for them.(and me perhaps :) )

3
Right I would. Hopefully my boss will understand, other vice f* him.

4
Tuff one, well I would call the cops, then prob try to help him… at least I hope so.

5
I call the cops, and run over to stop him as I see him do it. That bastard shall not be able to hurt the children anymore.

1. I give her half of the money and buy a smaller pie.
2. Pull over and ask if they need any help but I wouldn't get out of the car (at least to start off with).
3. Help the old lady.
4. Help the guy getting beaten up.
5. I would ask the guy what is doing and why. If I am not satisified with the answers then I would call in the authorities.
