Not many 64-year olds would have managed to not have a heart attack, if they were facing life imprisonment, so i do not see what is supposed to be strange here.
The immunal system works less efficiently when one is under a lot of stress, so naturally already existant somatic difficulties would have become a lot more pronounced.
