EOC2 - Ruling the Waves

I'm following, and still interested. If you would like me to join, I'm in. Just don't slot me in too soon, because I'm about to be 'on deck' in a couple of other SGs.

Welcome aboard, Scoutsout!

The order will go something like this then:

I think I'm going to make a concerted effort to find those damn horses. Without those, we roll through their territory unopposed. I should be able to play tonight.

Got it.

Pre turn – Rush harbor in Stavanger. Costs 156, but sends ivory and horses home. MM a little bit. Drop sci to 0 and hire a single scientist. Trade English Eng for Feud, gems, and 98g. Apparently we don’t always renegotiate deals ….

IT – I let our alliance w/Spain expire. Frankly, they’re not doing much, and we may want peace in less than 20 turns. Stavanger harbor -> library.

510 ad (1) – With the new luxes, I fire every specialist (except the 1 scientist). Battle for Odense: Both trebs miss. Vet sword kills reg spear (-1). Elite sword kills reg spear (-1), Odense falls. I notice we need to starve a few Viking cities.

IT – Carthage wants peace, but won’t offer anything. I let RoP with Spain expire as well. Carthage rops one warrior off next to Incense. Bergen worker -> library. Erine MI -> market. Iznik barracks -> horse. Ayin barracks -> horse.

520 ad (2) – Elite sword wins vs reg archer (-1).

IT – Istanbul MI -> MI. Uskuar pike -> MI. Aarhus worker -> library. Antalya pike -> horse.

530 ad (3) – vet sword kills reg horse.

540 ad (4) – SS Lenny kills reg galley (-2). Siege of Trondheim next turn.

IT – Bursa MI -> horse.

550 ad (5) – Battle of Trondheim: trebs go 1 for 2. Elite sword loses to vet spear (-3). Vet sword loses vs reg spear (-1). Vet sword loses vs reg spear (-2). Vet sword wins and promotes vs reg spear (-2). Elite sword wins vs vet spear (-2). Elite sword wins flawless vs reg spear. Still reg spear showing …

IT – Vet sword wins flawless vs one archer, and loses flawless to the next. Iznik horse -> galley. Salonica MI -> aqueduct. Byz completes HG, all cascade to Sun Tzus.

560 ad (6) – Vet sword kills elite archer (-1). Elite sword kills vet spear (-2). Reg sword wins an promotes vs vet warrior (-2).

IT – reg horse kills elite spear and promotes (-2). Istanbul MI -> MI. Izmit market -> barracks.

570 ad (7) – Vet sword loses vs reg spear (-2). Vet sword wins flawless vs reg spear. Elite sword wins vs reg archer (-1).

IT – Uskudar MI -> market. Aydin horse -> treb. Antalya horse –> pike. Kafa market -> pike.

580 ad (8) – Vet sword wins vs reg archer (-2), Molde falls.

IT – Bursa horse -> market. Iznik galley -> galley. Konya lib -> aque. Bolu lib -> barracks?

590 a (9) – vet sword retreats reg horse.

IT – Vet spear hol vs two vet horse and promotes. Vet horse kills vet sword (-2).

600 ad (10) – Elite sword wins vs vet archer (-3) and Sesn’s Swords are formed. (Shamelessly ripped off of Bede’s Bows)

The battle of Trondheim did not go as well as I had hoped. The leader is still active in Odense. I would probably recommend making a MI army, but I’ll leave that to Scoutsout. I’d also recommend using the pike near Trondheim to pillage the horses, they gave me a beating (again). I have starte making a stack of horses for later upgrade. I think that’s about it ….

After Action Review:

As you guys can tell by the screencaps, I managed to continue the war effort against the Vikings. They've got a crummy little city on the south end of the English landmass...not sure if it's worth taking, razing, or what.

The team might want to discuss whether we want the Statue of Zeus or not...it's rather close to completion. We could use it as a pre-build and switch that to Leo's or something if you want... I don't know how useful Ancient Cav will be in the Middle Ages... but there should be a decent number of shields in the bin in our capitol for a wonder of some sort.

I got a couple of trades going to get some lux in, and work on happiness a bit. I never really messed with the sliders...

There are 2 healthy MDI advancing on Copenhagen, and a wounded one healing. I don't know if that's enough or not. There's an elite MDI outside Trondheim in case it flips (it's rioting now...) Most of what's left of our stack of doom is advancing on Reykjavik.

Oh - I micromanaged for a lot of shields to get improvements/units. The next better player might want to check to make sure I didn't sacrifice too much growth...

I sent some workers south in some galleys, because they seem to be running out of useful stuff to do in our core. Some forestry operations for libraries and courts might be good...

@ Bede: Thanks for inviting me, that was fun!

@ Team: I hope I did okay by you guys, coming into the game in mid-stream and all (pun intended)

Scoutsout - I have to apologize for the condition of the game when I handed it off to you. That was indeed some serious neglection of the MM.

Vikings are obviously done now, made short work of them huh?

As for the SoZ, I don't know how useful that would be with muskets right around the corner. I might like to see us build the HE, FP, or go with Leos though.

I wouldn't go quite that far... and a couple of those MM moves involved changing a tile from one city to another...the kind of thing "fresh eyes" tend to see... ;)

Well... the better next player might want to stick a fork in 'em and turn 'em over to make sure the other side gets done...but I think Trondheim was a back-breaker. :hammer:

Well... the build is in the Capitol - so that rules out FP... but we could switch to Leo's, then Sistine... It'd be nice if a cascade came along before Astronomy. Copernicus' is one worth having.

But I'm with you, Sesn., with muskets around the corner, Ancient Cav are not that great.

Roster:
Butz - UP NOW
Bede - ON DECK
SesnOfWthr - In the hole
Scoutsout - crippled the Vikes

"But I'm with you, Sesn., with muskets around the corner, Ancient Cav are not that great."

Put together with artillery AC's make great city defenders. Pound the invaders down then kill 'em with the cavalry. But, we're on an island so AI SoD's are not a problem, especially with our strong navy....

Way to put the :hammer: on the Viqueen.

I'm wishing Ragnar the soon to be dead hadn't pulled off that sneak attack. It has put us way behind in development.

If we can pull a leader in the Viking mop-up one of Ragnar's cities would make a great FP site.

Re: AC: If we weren't well into the Middle Ages, AC could help, but if we build SoZ now, we won't get that many. I think SoZ expires with Metallurgy....

@ Bede: FP in Viking lands sounds good... but I've got another question:

Who's next? :hammer:

@Butz - I meant among the AI - as in "Who are we gonna conquer next?"

@Team, are we still looking for another?

The Spanish and the Orange both look like appealing targets, but the Dutch would be more beneficial to go after.

I would say one more player would round us out nicely. :)

We might be able to set up a fairly short logistical route to Byzantium, but Dromons might be dangerous until we get Caravels...

In the spirit of a challenge, I 'm willing to take on the Dromons! :hammer:

After all, this is "ruling the waves", right? We haven't exactly been a naval superpower thus far....

SesnOfWthr said:

...and I do love it when Theodora gets that pouty-face after you sack Byzantium proper...

As for naval superpowers... hmmm...are we going to play this thing out to the age of Destroyers/Cruisers/Battleships?
