"In the flood plains, next to the river!"
"Just take the regular plains, desert is hard to defend. It's got more food that way!"
"Settle on the hill! It is easily defended and will give us ample opportunities for mining!"
Tasunke tried to drown out the voices in his mind and think clearly for himself. When he had ran into problems thinking up a good place to settle the previously nomadic Hippus tribes, he asked for the opinion of the tribe on where to settle... a bad decision, for now every damn Hippus at the meeting was loudly shouting his opinion at him. And would you know it, every damn Hippus had a different opinion as well. How was he going to make a proper decision like this?
He rose to speak:
"I think we might consid-""
"On the hill!"
"On the plains!"
"By the wheat!"
"SILENCE!!!!"
The gathered Hippus briefly fell silent. Just long enough for Tasunke to herd the council meeting properly around, and briefly reason their way to the proper place to settle. And once that was done they could all go about their own business again and leave him to his plans.
"What do our scouting parties say?"
One of the scouts stepped forward.
"We know that a source of cotton is located south from where we are now. We have also discovered an old tomb of sorts, but I'm not going near that one. Cotton will help, and we can settle on the hill for the protection it offers."
"It is decided, then. We settle on the hill. It is as good a place as any, and it will be easy to defend."
And thus, Altheriol-ta-Mealthiel was founded.
The night Tasunke had finally founded his capital and built a makeshift palace for him to sleep in (in reality, it was naught but another Hippus hut with a royal guard in front) the night should have been a blissful one after hard hours of work and decision-making. Instead, he was haunted by dreams, sent by various gods to try and sway him to their way... and some of them sent disturbing visions with them.
"Give your people something they can believe in..."
"Codify the Law, praise Junil and be rewarded..."
"Have your magicians make contact with the forces of Agares, or face destruction..."
"Cross the sea. Find the raven-haired one. My children can guide you to where you must go next..."
"Build a Bazaar to me..."
As such it was no surprise that when the royal guard came in to wake Tasunke, he had fallen off his bed and evidently not slept very well.
"Everything all right, Sir? I'm sorry to wake you this early, but a foreigner has arrived and wishes to speak with you.
She waits outside for you."
Tasunke dragged himself off the ground and outside his 'palace', facing the mysterious foreign woman.
"Who are you and why do you wish to speak with me?"
"Please do not be alarmed by my presence, oh leader of the Hippus. My name is Thessalonica, and I am a devotee of Sirona. My goddess Sirona wishes to call upon you to defend the holy places of this world against desecration. She has heard great tales of your strength in combat, and our order devoted to this defense is too much weakened to defend them against the forces of evil. Various places all over the world are being protected by our monastic order. Please, do aid us in this honorable endeavour."
"You mean like the tomb in sight of our glorious city, lass? I'm telling ya, that tomb doesn't need protecting from anyone. My men won't set a foot near it - they say that place is cursed. Say something about a powerful user of death magic being buried there. Whenever I tell'em to check it out, they come with flimsy excuses such as these, afraid of a dangerous lich. I say it's bollocks about the lich but it's probably still a bad place. We ain't going near that one."
"As you wish."
Tasunke evaluated some possibilities before asking Thessalonica to remain at his court as an advisor. He could use every voice in his court that didn't advocate the Hippus way to everything. Gracefully as always the Elohim woman agreed to his request.
After founding the Hippus capital, the scouts left with the blessing of Junil to explore and report on their findings.
Praise to Junil indeed when their blessing got them out of a very nasty situation with a few gargoyles, and killed the lions with the help of it. Junil's blessing kept them alive for a higher task - the first contact with a foreign civilization.
On the outskirts of the foreign land, the scouts found a small village - yet the villagers did not come out to greet them.
Instead, all of them fled into their huts and cottages, fearful of the foreign men - like the small tribes usually did, but even more fearful than a common tribe. The Hippus would find out later... the oppressed underclasses of the Calabim, a people ruled by their vampiric overlord Flauros. The two leaders did not get off to a good start.
Lizardmen relentlessly assaulted the nascent Hippus, but every single one of them was clubbed down by the Hippus warriors.
Soon, the Hippus would expand, and eventually do a bid for greatness in the world.
One way... or another.
