"Fall Patch" announced

Well, I noticed they were very specific about it being the Ultra-Book version and I wondered if perhaps this might mean a different build Patch version as with the Mac.

The German man was very specific about the Ultrabook Version. Tim Kipp (The firaxis dude) talked about it being a patch. Even if it was a different build patch, why would they release it for this supposed windows 8 Ultrabook Version before the regular PC one? I can say that atleast 70% of the userbase is running the game on the PC Version

The ironic thing about all of this is that I had started another long game of G&K and played most of the weekend...and enjoying it immensely (even turned espionage on, a first for me). It is a great game right now, patch or no patch.

You can`t figure a possibility? Ok, Il`l tell you:

To sell the Intel Ultra book and Windows 8? You know, what they`re advertising in that vid? We know companies will hold back some stuff like DLCs so they can sell on another specific platform or hardware first. We have seen how companies like Bethesda for Skyrim have made DLC Pc users wait while Xboxers get first. This could easily apply to Patches.

Precisely. They were showing off the new patch, which introduced new touchscreen control options, and optimizations which make the game playable on ultrabooks.

This is why I'm not buying 'X-Com'.

I'll buy it in two years when it's patched and the expansion pack adds enough gameplay to justify the price.

It doesn`t need to be a different platform, just a different product. If they are specifically selling to the Intel ultrabook, I don`t see it as implausible at all that they could hold back, or make a slightly different version, patch, for its sake, especially if they`re selling point is the Civ5`s Windows 8 compatibilty with those ultrabooks. All those products will ship with windows 8 as default. WE already have the game, they have our money, but potential customers give them more money. Ergo, they get the attention.

It`s not at all an unknown business strategy and could explain the problems with the Patch expectations.

He`s making a valid point. he shouldn`t shut up cos you know he`s right.

Making false assumptions and telling others is even worse than people whining, since all that will happen is people will get disappointed and whine even harder later. It`s exactly what happened when `someone` said the Patch was going to be released when Win8 was released, so every one was waiting for that- but it didn`t happen; someone created false expectations.

This has caused much of the angst.

He? No, I was talking about this thread in general. There has to be something more constructive to talk about. Let's talk about the Patch itself, not about who whines or not.

I'm happy the Firaxis devs learned more about optimization during their time working with Intel. Hopefully this means that they've finally tamed the multi-threaded "perpetual cpu hog" monster that they created.

Near the end the interviewer commented that the upgrade, ie. patch, is coming in Q4 and the rep confirmed that Q4 is correct. That means anytime between now and the end of the year.

Thus you lose an option to enjoy game twice Without and with expansion

...er...I'm going to say that you, as software developer, cannot distinguish an Ultrabook with Win8 from any other Laptop, or any other device with a touch screen. Not even when you take the hardware specs paragraph by paragraph.

Just turned my Steam connection to offline. I'm in the middle of a great game (and great war against France) and would hate to lose the game to a patch that would break it.

Lots of whiny babies here. Moderator Action: no need for that. Is Firaxis perfect? No, but they sure as hell support their games better and longer than 90% of the companies out there.

If you remember, GnK was said to be released in late spring. June 18th, just 2 days before the summer solstice. So, 7 months or so (?) for a patch to be released on a game like this, really is phenomenal as far as time frame goes.

I think we are fine with delays and having Firaxis take their time. We just wish they would communicate with us better. Especially with a game like Civ where some people will play a single match for weeks. You don't want to just ambush players with a patch that makes their save file unplayable.

I agree with that, being one of those players who take weeks to play.
It is my hope that we get a bit of notice when they have a good handle of when it is, even if they told us something like testing going well but the patch won't be ready for 2 to 6 weeks.
