Spiritual Awakening, Spiritual Death
One of the first sages of Fizcat was one named Fenwic. He was the overseer of the planning, building and later on administration of the Castle Library. More importantly, he was the Duke's primary advisor - and a philosopher. He had studied much abroad, and learned much about the various faiths and beliefs of the outside world. This experience allowed him to create a new school of thought and spiritual aspiration. However, the very events that dominated his lifetime affected greatly how this new religion took shape.
Foremost of them all was the plague which devastated nearly all of the major civilizations along the Great Sea. Fenwic had seen the horrors of the plague himself as he visited Corenwal, and witnessed several of his companions fall to the illness during his brief stay. He also observed how the Bhatoist priests kept telling the faithful how it was all a punishment placed upon them for their sins and wrongdoings.
Fenwic agreed that the plague was not human-made, and had its source in some otherworldly entity of great power. Wether this was a god or something else, he did not care greatly. What he was more focused on was how it appeared to him that this god they worshipped was not a benevolent protector, but a terrible tyrant. And the faithful in their blind obedience did nothing but pray for repentance and mercy, giving more and more of their lives and "energy" to their oppressor.
It quickly became a reason for Fenwic to mistrust Bhatoism, or indeed any religion that worshipped divine entities. He believed these were malign spirits only seeking to gain the worship of the mortals, and thereby their souls in the afterlife. He therefore stated that all worship of gods was a self-destructive practice, and had to be avoided lest these gods grow more and more powerful. He was so convinced of this that he managed to persuade the Duke to outlaw all religious practice in Fizcat.
As for how every individual could avoid or rid itself of ties to the "gods", Fenwic had a few choice methods. One was to meditate in silence while one contemplated on one's life, actions and thoughts. This was to give a person greater insight in himself, his strengths and weaknesses. After the weaknesses were adressed and eliminated, one could advance to directly contacting spirits and combating them, either with undauntable serenity or sheer force of will. This was to give the person the ability to identify malign spirits and repulse them with unwavering confidence.
The last level of advancement only achieved by Fenwic himself, was the state of void or nothingness. While in this state, the nature of one's soul was transformed into that of a spirit. This essentially means the person becomes a god in his own right, able to extend his will to beyond the mortal shell and to the "opposite realm".
Fenwic was a highly respected figure in Fizcat during his time, and he gained many followers. Much of his teachings was rather mystical and obscure. The many disciples split up after their master's death, creating many different styles and variations of the new "religion". However, the essence is still the same, as they all view worship of gods as dangerous and harmful - as well as meditation remaining the sole form of practice.
OOC: It's getting quite late, and I don't feel like I can write anything remotely interesting any longer. I don't have a name for the religion yet, I guess you can make one for me. Orders sent, happy update. Good night.
