Fat Americans.

A problem is eating the wrong food. People I know who come home from America says that it's hard to find healthy food over there. And there is sugar in everything. Even the field rations for soldiers are sweet and candy like, and the whole deal with pancakes and bacon in the morning sure tastes good, but is not exactly healthy either.

Veggetables is the way to go.

That is very true. It's not only hard to find healthy food, it's also FREAKIN'EXPENSIVE! I mean when vegetables cost more than processed crap food, something's really wrong.

In France when you go to farmer's markets, the food is cheaper than in hypermarkets. Here going to the farmer's market is more expensive than going to Safeways

Makes me think of the Tv series what is about to hit BBC. About the 5 fattest fatties in Britian go on a 500 mile walk in 8 weeks. Should be fun. :D

The farmer's markets out here are pretty cheap (lettuce, cantalopes, most fruit and vegetables really), fresh macadamian nuts too. Except heirloom tomatoes but they are so good they're totally worth it (plus I'm cool with one of the farmers so he always gives me a break). Fresh picked stuff is a million times better than regular old grocery store fruit and veggies. I wish I had access to this stuff growing up, maybe I wouldn't have subsisted on "pizza, captain crunch and canned (chef boy r'dee beef ravioli mostly) past" (what my brother used to say my three food groups were. :crazyeye:

What do you mean by "out there"? 'cos I was referring to Farmer's markets in the Bay Area...
What about Trader Joe? We've been thinking of actually going a little further in our weekly shopping, because we've heard good things about it - apparently they sell local and healthy stuff, and the few times I've been there I indeed found nice products... Do you go there?

Nah, the three food groups are; fast food and soda. :D

You're probably closer to the truth than you think. Food for Americans nowadays is part of the overall outsourcing mentality in that it's another service that can be performed by somebody else for cost and convenience, calories and fat be dammed.

The University hospital near where I work has a Wendy's as its main food provider for staff and visitors. Go figure :hmm:

I work @ a University and it's the same thing here.. all the food courts for students are 95% fast & unhealthy food.

I go to the hospital caf. to eat sometime, it's closeby, but their caf is pretty much the same.. maybe 90% fast food.

It's disguisting.

I ate Lentil soup (big size, love it) and taco salad at the hospital cafeteria today ($5.80, BTW) And that wasn't even the healthy choice. The healthy one was cod in olive sauce, asparagus, peas and carrots. Plus, you can always make your own salad and pay by weight. (of the salad, not your own weight)

I have compassion for people (as no one is perfect in regards to self-discipline), the culture of sedentary work and cars makes it difficult but not impossible.

If everyone biked to work not only would they save hundreds (probably thousands) of dollars a year, they'd also be significantly fitter.
Last time people in the west did that in a big way was prolly WWII.

There are British figures indicating that life expectancy actually rose in Britain 1939-1945, despite people being killed in the war.

The effects were as if everyone had been put on a low-fat diet and had to take plenty of exercise.:goodjob:

Maybe its just because I'm 14, but I eat and I dont do exercise except when I'm forced to, and I dont get any fatter. Heck, I think I'm losing weight because maybe I'm not eating enough. :p

At what age does faster than average metabolism stop?

Watch out for your college years. It happened to a few members of my family. Two of them got out of it.

I'm not fat, still. Then again, I don't eat alot of fast food.

Definitely by college. Not much time left to get your house in order, eh?

edit - it depends on genetics, too, but that is easily overcome with the right (wrong) foods. Some people actually stay thin throughout life. Strangely enough, the dieting that so many people have done over the years, where you deny yourself food for long stretches to lose weight, actually shocks your metabolism to slow down and makes it easier to gain weight when you go back to a more "normal amount".

The biggest change in my weight was when I cut out pop (soda) completely. (275 all sugar calories per 24 oz. bottle). I lost 15 pounds in three months. Maybe I'll do that again.

For me, at about 22.

I've gain a bit of weight since (mostly muscle, I suspect, since my waist circumference has shrunk), but the most obvious effect is I get sated alot quicker nowadays.

Thats why I am trying to phase fast food out of my diet. At the most keep it on a once a few week basis.

Not all fast food is bad. A simple burger with only meat, tomato and salad in a bun is far from the worst choice you could make.

I just ate KFC this afternoon and i am not fat at all.

I am 25.1 on the BMI which is barely just barely overweight but i dont look fat at all.

My point is fast food or eating unhealthy otherwise is ok once in awhile.

I only eat fast food once a week for example.

I live in San Diego (North County) right now. Maybe the prices are higher in San Fran (I know prices vary here also from market to market).

Trader's Joe's is excellent IMO. High quality stuff but unlike Whole Foods they're prices are quite decent. :)

Food, that crap you eat and drink makes you fat. Have you seen "Supersize me" (documentary film, very inspiring)?

My friends that have been in America were shocked not by the sheer number of fat people, we can't really complain because statistically, Czechs aren't much better, but by the age of the fat people. In Czech rep., fat people are usually older (above 40), while young people and especially girls maintain healthy weight.

One Czech hockey player who spent few years in the US (NHL) said: "They love to eat" when asked if the Americans are so fat as it is said :)
