[Feature] Additional Wonders

That's great. I am currently trying to compile which wonders are left to possibly include and having art available will be the main deciding factor there. Conversely if we have a great wonder idea with no art available it would be really helpful if you could create some for it.

Also regarding Akihabara: I have so far decided against including it because the new map will also bring a lot of new resources, and I only want to decide to add further resources on top of that (I think we are at the limit of what the gamefont file allows without changing how it works).

if a wonder for Orthodoxy is required we can consider Sumela Monastery, but I don't think finding an appropriate art would be easy

Alternatively, there seem to be available art for the Meteora Monasteries.

In fact I have a personal preference for Meteora over Mt. Athos, but that may be bias due to having visited one and not the other.

Started another sheet to keep track of proposed wonders and their potential effects/art etc. here to help with discussion (it's also linked in the OP). I did not include all proposals made in this thread, if one is left out it is most likely because I don't know of any fitting art.

What is the Basilica of Our Lady? That can describe many, many Catholic churches... (Not to mention that the name is redundant with Notre Dame, which also means "Our Lady"). The effect suggests it is a pilgrimage site. That would make sense for the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, perhaps?

What is the Metropolitaine? Is it the Paris Metro? Then in French it would be correctly called "Le Métropolitain", but a working English name could be "Metropolitan Railway".

It's interesting that Mont Saint-Michel was never discussed (I think), if it has available art. It would make sense to pick only one of Cluny or Mont Saint-Michel, though, otherwise that's a lot of French medieval monasteries.

Vaxholm Fortress feels underwhelming. I get that it is an attempt to create a Swedish Empire era wonder. I tried to find one too and my conclusion was that nothing from Early Modern Scandinavia really made sense, unfortunately.

I really like the effects of the Venetian Arsenal (should it be called "The Arsenal"?) and the Alamut Fortress.

Suggestions:
  • Make the Lotus Temple require a high number of religions in the city (e.g. 4 religions, but any 4)
  • An effect I thought might be cool is "+100% GP points from wonders" (if that's too weak, increase the % or add a secondary effect). Typically, specialists are the main source of GPP, but with this effect, wonders would play a larger role, which would be nice for civs that can't afford large specialist populations.

It's Our Lady of Guadelupe, with its full name would just be too long. And yes, there was a typo, and it's meant to refer to the Paris Metro. Kinda agreed about Vaxholm Fortress, the current Royal Palace also fits the time period but unfortunately does not have a non-generic name so it's hard to include. Maybe it should just be the Vasa for Sweden? Renamed Venetian Arsenal to The Arsenal to keep things generic.

I also like extra GPP for wonders but then which wonder should provide it?

Well Kungliga Slot just means Royal Palace, rather generic for a wonder. Tre Kronor on the other hand is too early, I'd like to represent the Swedish Empire.

Let's cross another 1.16 feature off the list. I have created a feature branch that adds 50 (yes, fifty) new wonders to the mod, and makes some changes to existing wonders.

All kind of suggestions for additional wonders and critique on the existing state of the branch welcome. I encourage you to check out the branch and review the art and the position of the wonders in the tech tree as well. A proposal becomes even more valuable if it includes a suggested effect, art and tech requirement.

Why would we need so many wonders, to begin with? With rough logic that for every 10 buildings you get 1 wonder -- existing 77 are more than enough. Wonders need to be something special, very important and at least in 1/2 cases available for everyone, so that we can have a true competition between civs.

You made most of the case yourself, a large portion of these wonders are added in periods where there are currently few wonders to build, and most of these are not region locked. Likewise for earlier periods the focus has been to expand for religions etc. that currently have few wonders. With the limited number of wonders per city this is unlikely to cause wonder inflation.

I also like extra GPP for wonders but then which wonder should provide it?
Not sure if it should be an early wonder (because it would have a proportionally larger effect) or a late one (because more wonders exist). But it's a generic enough effect that it could in principle fit many wonders that don't currently have one—e.g. Lotus Temple, Triumphal Arc, Mont Saint-Michel.

Maybe it should just be the Vasa for Sweden?
Vasa as in... the warship that sank a few minutes after being at sea for the first time? That doesn't sound quite right.

I have a particular fondness for Sweden, because I have lived there for a little while, but it's really hard to find anything that stands out. Although Suomenlinna (called Sveaborg in Swedish, which would be the best name in-game), a star fort near Helsinki, might be a strong enough candidate. It's a bit later than the Swedish Empire, as it was built in the mid-18th century, but I think that's good enough.

The effect could be related to the forts-on-island feature that was discussed a while ago. As for art, maybe it could just be a reskinned star fort in water.

I thought Iron Dome is a weapon system, wonder why it goes into the Wonder list. Other nations are also using similar anti-missile interception systems. Maybe more suitable to make it as a national project like SDI.

Tre Kronor would work as the castle was remodeled and upgraded by the Vasa kings, and got it's name in 1588.

New update: added more wonders:
- Al Khazneh
- Alamut Fortress
- Mount Athos
- Guadalupe Basilica
- Gur-e-Amir
- Global Seed Vault
- Lotus Temple
- Mole Antonelliana

Does anyone know any art for a subway building? I'd love to include the Paris Metro.

I have no idea how 3D models work, but is it possible to somehow convert something e.g. from this site (it uses .skp files) to something usable in game? Having one of the Art Nouveau entrances to the Paris Metro would be amazing.

Yeah, that's what I had in mind and why I prefer the Paris Metro over other subway systems in particular, because it also has a clear artistic element. In general it's possible to convert 3D warehouse stuff to nif, but it's apparently a rather complex process that I am not capable of. Another concern is the polygon count, even the relatively low 1.8k polygons is rather a lot for Civ4.

Maybe it's good for the Pantheon? The Roman Empire is bound to control a lot of wonders so it would fit.

Merged a pull request by merijn_v1: wonder size adjustments, better wonder art, small fixes

New update:
- included Amber Room, Palace of Nations
- changed Triumphal Arch from a National Wonder into a Great Wonder
