FFH - A Shadow Introduction

Lurker Comment:

I just recently rediscovered Succession Games and have been hearing so much about FFH. This will be a treat for me. Perhaps I'll finally get how to play it :)

I'm a bit overdoing my lurking, am I not? :mischief:

I'll try to be humble, but it's not in my nature.
I like the dotmap too, although I don't like good tiles (grassland) being lost in the middle. no big deal though.
I just wanted to underline something very pleasant :
you have all 3 cereals = 3 health right away +3 others with a granary + 3 happiness with breweries. I'm sure you guys will love rivers.

Lurkers are most welcome to take part, its nice to know someone's paying attention ;) . You are right on the cereal crops, a brewery seems to be our only happiness resort.

@ Melhisedek, welcome, best way to experience SGs is to join one :)

Some leaders will prioritise different religions (the ljosafar will head straight fpor fellowship of leaves, the khazad for runes of kilmorph) and others will not at all. Luck of the draw.
Thanks for the feedback, Oz! Actually one of my test games was played using those elves. Do they just rock or what? I loved building cottages in the forest tiles!

Also, I'm not exactly sure how to make the image bigger, but I have an idea to try for the next time.
Image shack has an option to reduce the image size when you upload it. It looks like you might have checked that box to reduce it. :dunno: I normally leave that feature off and just crop the pictures myself. It comes in handy, though, if you just want to post the images inline. As you normally don't want to go over 800x600 for an inline picture.

Looking at the hand we have been dealt though, we already have rice and both corn and wheat are nearby as well.
I, too, like the idea of going after the grains and building breweries.

I understand that but my level of play is pretty low. I'm confident at Warlord but I play mindlessly, just building everything in every city :( No specialization. When it comes to upgrades I try to have some balance but no real strategy or rule of a tumb there either. I would love to play in a SG but am afraid I would only be a burden :/

Well, that was a quick turnset.

I decide to leave our second warrior at home in case of roaming skeletons or something. Shouldn't be a problem at monarch but I'd rather avoid the embarrassment of being wiped out early. Train a scout.

In the east our first warrior fights off a wolf, then makes first contact with another civ.

As this guy is Evil too we start with a +2 relations bonus. We then run into a scout around the same area belonging to:

As her text suggests, the Svartalfar are quite prone to backstabbing, but are a fair distance away. As our scout finishes, we get another event!

I feel compelled to choose the most Evil option available (I suggest we roleplay when we get random events) and run forced human medical experiments throughout the city. We drop from 3 to 2 population as a result which will slow down our first worker production by a few turns. However, we gain a permanent +2 health bonus which is always handy when sitting on floodplains.

Our scout heads west and runs into the edge of the world, which puzzles me until I look up the settings and notice we're playing on Inland Sea. I send him south, dodging a couple of giant spiders, destroying a monster lair and finding a hut. The hut pops mysticism about 10 turns early, which is a bonus for us. It enables the god-king civic (a more expensive version of Bureaucracy) and allows us to build Elder Councils for research.

I revolt us into Agriculture and God-King civics, and stop here so we can discuss our next tech and moves. I have set us to research Crafting for now en route to mining so our worker will have something to do after building farms. You can't slave early in FFH so mines are critical to early production in anything but a worker/settler pump city. However, if the team prefers to go Animal Husbandry or Education instead I won't complain. I don't think there is any good reason to rush to Knowledge of the Ether immediately. At this stage of the game, we should be claiming land and building up our economic base.

Good medical research, remember the ends justifies the means. :mwaha:

Crafting then Mining seems the way to go, we'll be happy handicapped so will want some mines with our farms.

Interesting we have evil neighbours, Auric seems to love founding religions but never adopts them and Faeryl will be after Ashen Veil as well.

stuge is UP.

I'm at work at the moment, so will just drop a couple of comments:

Awesome hut pop for Mysticism!

Auric has the Agnostic trait which means that while religion spreads to his cities, he will never be able to research them himself or adopt one as a state religion. While we don't have to worry about him stealing AV (Ashen Veil)from us, we won't get any significant relations bonuses from religion with him either.

The Svartalfar are the dark elves of Eberus, the evil counterpart to the Ljosalfar. They will probably research FoL (Fellowship of Leaves) as they have much of the same symmetry as the Ljos and since FoL doesn't require an alignment change to adopt. All of the rest of the religions have an alignment restriction. We will not have to worry about them stealing AV from us either.

Is this game "Compact Enforced" or not? If not, we will discover a potential ally/pain in the ass in our quest to destroy the world when we summon Hyborem. The more evil nations playing, the stronger he will become - any evil units that die have a chance to return to his service as Manes. If the Compact is enforced, then its irrelevant, lol.

After Mining, we might consider Philosophy>Way of the Wicked. With the huge masses of food we have at our disposal, and the potential happiness bonuses from our Breweries, the Slavery civic is looking mighty tasty...

I just got home and loaded the most recent saved game and guess what I found?

It's a long way away, but it will be ours!

My advice is to set me up for a very straightforward turnset :). I am playing a test game as the vampires right now, and I keep losing my blood pets to giant spiders .

I noticed something strange...my cities seem to grow even though I am building Settlers/Workers.

Thanks for the note about the Spiders. I knew there was something I was forgetting last night!

When you guys are scouting and you see a Giant Spider, go ahead and plant an ingame sign on top of it, so we know where to avoid sending troops. Even if you engage it and die, just plant a sign where your unit died. This will help keep the rest of us from feeding the beast, lol

the woods are dangerous places in FfH ;).

Once we have Animal Husbandry we should try and capture the spiders and set them loose among our "friends".

Cities shouldn't grow while building settlers/workers

darrell and Conroe, don't worry too much about your first turns. Just play as you see it. If something you're not sure about comes uo just stop and ask for clarification.

Well, my Prince game is getting better. I had a Jungle start and made the mistake of prioritizing Iron Working . I've slowly got the hang of it and look well on my way to a Domination win, I'm mostly playing around now. Hopefully I won't screw things up too badly :).

Still, little tidbits make me realize how far away I am from being competent, e.g. you can capture barbarian animals if you know AH ? Also, I have trouble telling what kind of barbarians (if any) will stay away from my cities. The fact that Scouts seem to be able to see hidden barbarians was another useful tidbit.
