[FfH II Art Team Blog]

I was bored and broke it out again. I simply can't resist but ask.

How long have the shadows HAD that model!?!

I concur, the Baron needs a make over.

I think it would be really cool if he looked like a well dressed and well armed human nobleman most of the time, and turned into a giant werewolf only in his attack animation. (From what I hear, this should be possible if you give him a "weapon" that looks like a werewolf and is bigger than his normal model.) After all, his pedia clearly shows him as formulating tactics and directing the younger werewolves while appearing as a human with a large cudgel and a rich blue cape, and only becoming a beast when challenged.

We also really need more impressive Balors and Eidola.

Thanks for volunteering to make 'em MC :p

SeZ, I'm looking forward to the Balseraphs, they really deserve a full set of colourful and exotic units.

Why don't you guys get learning and give some of this stuff a shot?

Most of those capable of making neat things have limited time and a mile long list of work.

Blender, Gimp, and Nifscope are all you need to get started. And the main C&C forum is always good for asking questions when you get stuck.

Well, we're pretty busy too, and also very unlikely to get good enough at it to make high enough quality graphics for the units we care about anytime soon. Maybe we could help make new graphics for weaker units, but that just isn't as interesting.

I think that the Auric/Bannor Champion graphics could make a good base for the human-form Duin (obviously changing the face and hair adding a cape), and a larger version o one of the existing werewolf's serving as his "weapon" to make him change when attacking.

edit: I just checked the pedia and it doesn't seem like he was dressed in armor here, but he certainly has on armor in the popup and leaderhead, instead of the cloak. It might be easiest to just change Auric's head, removing the beard and giving him long black hair with a red streak swept over most of his face.

A human walked through the battle; he had a cudgel at his side, and he wore a thick gold brooch and an embroidered dark blue cloak. He was dressed like a nobleman, although from his build and stride it was obvious that he was also a warrior. The werewolves grew even more ferocious as the man watched; he commanded a few toward hidden elves or to help in places where elves were trying to mount a defense. A new born werewolf, blinded by its own hunger, made the mistake of attacking him. He became a werewolf so fast he seemed to live in both forms at once. His claw hit the young werewolf on the side of his face, removing his left ear, jaw, and most of the newborn werewolf's throat.

I just got to thinking, as awesome as Sphener looks he would look better with Angel of Death-style animated wings.

I dunno there are some really great units that can be stolen (ahem borrowed with permission) from other modmod. For example these two are from Orbis (and maybe FF?). The Praetorian and the Pontifex, one of these would make a great Eidolons.

But then FF is left with an eidolon that looks identical to a scion champion. If you're planning on modifying things some way, it could work.

And magister, if you can learn C++, you can learn a bit of basic art skill. You've clearly proven that you have the mindset and imagination for it. Why not just start with simple reskinning, and trexture editing, go from there. Although I was addressing everyone, not just you specifically. Rystic, Lade, Annex, Fenboy. I'm sure you guys could give art a try too. You might enjoy it :) I do. The feeling of looking at something you've made, and that you're proud of, is just awesome. Even moreso is when other people comment that they like it. It's all too easy to get addicted to praise actually..

My first unit was a rainbow colored cube. exactly 8 vertices. I've come a long way since then, but it's always good to start simple. Pick a unit that's similar to what you want, and try changing some colors in the texture. There are plenty of places to get help when you feel like taking a shot at modelling. I started by postying a thread in C&C along the lines of "I'm a noob, tell me what to do" and it worked. Big thanks to mechaerik and the_coyote, by the way.

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship,
design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take
orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure,
program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, and die gallantly. Specialization is for
insects.

I don't think those looks appropriate for Eidola. I'm not a fan of any untis in FfH having such high helmets, or being so angular. I'm not a fan of dark elf units made for the warhamer mod for that reason.

Eidolon is Greek for image, idol, apparition, phantasm, shadow, or shade. In epic poems it often means a ghost.

I tend to think that the Eidolon unit should be a dark and shadowy unit with no sharp angles (excluding some possible spikes), possibly with an alpha channel that makes them transparent like Illusions. Wraith-like robes might be appropriate, but with armor underneath. Maybe the LotR mod has Nazgul graphics that could work.

Edit: While I'm sure the FfH art team could do better, the Arda mod's Sauron graphics (maybe with the alpha channel making it translucent) would probably work fine. http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=4812

I guess I could give the art programs a try, but not before I finish my Hydraulics lab report and certainly not before Wednesday's test. I am by no means an expert in C++, having only made my first successful schema change and new python function last week.

I think I may start with trying to make a model for my Tesseract unit (the dimensional III summon):

Obviously, I'd be restricted to using 3D projections. I probably won't bother to animate it either, at least at first.

I did consider starting something last summer; downloaded blender and everything. Then university (and a personal tragedy) hit me like a steam train. I haven't had the time to consider it since

Seeing as I'm the only one with three months of absolutely nothing to do, I shall take your challenge!

Now that I have all three programs you mentioned, are there any specific, good tutorials you know of? :run:

There was a talk about Balseraph hunters, but I think this idea died ;(.
Or will someone work on that concept?

Blender.org has good tutorials about blender.

Modmod? Those were already stolen from another mod. :) WFB mod, IIRC.

The tesseract. 5 attack, 10 defense, and 50% vs 3 dimensional units.

5 movement flying, only each movement value uses a dimension, making him 10% less effective against 3-d units. can teleport to any friendly city witin 50 squares

In my version, it doesn't have any attack or defense strength, it only has one move (plus possibly some from the caster's extension promotion), it doesn't have flying, and it is DOMAIN_IMMOBILE. However, it can carry cargo and counts as an ICBM so it can move instantly (along with its cargo) to any tile on the map (except too close to units or territory of civs with whom you are at peace). This is quite easy to do with only xml (although an SDK change to make it unload units before dieing from its duration running out is preferred; that of course has been a part of FF since Broader Alignments was added to it, as I convinced Grey Fox to make this 1 line change back when I thought I'd be using his dll for my modmod), while your suggestion would be extremely difficult to code.

Anyway, that isn't really relevant to the art thread, so we should probably drop it.
