Roleplaying games, eh? Sounds awesome. I've just started playing FFH2, but I can already tell that playing against the AI is going to get boring. (No Education or Code of Laws on turn 250, hmm...) And I also can't stand playing against powergamer humans who play for maximum efficiency with no regard for realism.
What kind of settings do you usually pick? I don't think my computer can handle anything larger than a Small map. At least not for Erebus maps. I usually play Small Erebus, High sea level, 9-10 players total.
Either way, I'd like to give this a shot sometime this weekend.
There are AI mods that at least make them have a respectable economy, though that simply can't compare to playing against other people. The settings are usually:
Small Pangaea Map(Sealevel varies depending on people; 4-3 is high, 6-7 is low)
Quick Speed(This is required for multiplayer to stop the game from becoming stale)
Aggressive AI(Needed for the AI to function after a player quits)
No Technology Trading(Prevents players from forming 'tech pacts', though if roleplayed properly tech trading can be left on)
Wildlands(Debatable usually on)
Living World(Debatable, usually on)
All Unique Features(Debatable, on/off half of the time)
Occasionally other settings get tossed in as well, but those are the basic ones. Also, house rules:
No Lairs until turn 50 (If you pop an ogre on turn 15, it can ruin the game for everybody)
No War until 100(Debatable, exception for Clan/Doviello)
We have two times of games, roleplaying games and free for all games. roleplaying ones should be roleplayed obviously. In FFA games, anything goes, even if it doesn't make sense (Hyborem summoning Basium, for instance)
