FfH2 Roleplaying Games [Thread III]

Roleplaying games, eh? Sounds awesome. I've just started playing FFH2, but I can already tell that playing against the AI is going to get boring. (No Education or Code of Laws on turn 250, hmm...) And I also can't stand playing against powergamer humans who play for maximum efficiency with no regard for realism.

What kind of settings do you usually pick? I don't think my computer can handle anything larger than a Small map. At least not for Erebus maps. I usually play Small Erebus, High sea level, 9-10 players total.

Either way, I'd like to give this a shot sometime this weekend.

There are AI mods that at least make them have a respectable economy, though that simply can't compare to playing against other people. The settings are usually:

Small Pangaea Map(Sealevel varies depending on people; 4-3 is high, 6-7 is low)
Quick Speed(This is required for multiplayer to stop the game from becoming stale)
Aggressive AI(Needed for the AI to function after a player quits)
No Technology Trading(Prevents players from forming 'tech pacts', though if roleplayed properly tech trading can be left on)
Wildlands(Debatable usually on)
Living World(Debatable, usually on)
All Unique Features(Debatable, on/off half of the time)

Occasionally other settings get tossed in as well, but those are the basic ones. Also, house rules:
No Lairs until turn 50 (If you pop an ogre on turn 15, it can ruin the game for everybody)
No War until 100(Debatable, exception for Clan/Doviello)

We have two times of games, roleplaying games and free for all games. roleplaying ones should be roleplayed obviously. In FFA games, anything goes, even if it doesn't make sense (Hyborem summoning Basium, for instance)

Well, we just had an interesting game. Two Kuriotates(Tasunke and I), Two Calabim(KillerClowns and Roger) and two AI. The two Calabim were on a team, Tasunke and I were separate. I was doing very well for the first 80 turns, had a great economy... then I switched to Hyborem on turn 80. This turned out to be a big mistake.

By switching to Hyborem my research slid down the tubes. BEcause I couldn't capture any cities due to the bug in patch G, I had to wait until I switched again, this time to Basium, to do anything. By this time, Tasunke had amassed a large enough army of Cenetaur Archers to destroy both Calabim players. When I summoned and took over Basium, I tried to capture my former civilization's cities.

As I was slowly conquering them, taking my land back, Tasunke decided to come harass me. He couldn't really do anything at that point, but was just being annoying. However, after losing Basium at 95% odds.... everything changed...

Without Basium, my conquest of my former civ drove to a halt. Later, Tasunke built Chalid, before I even had a religion. I rushed ot Order, but Chalid was just too powerful. Tasunke had higher tech rating, more powerful untis... the game was over aty that point

I did manage to sneak a worker away and plant it in Archeron's city though. Tasunke had to capture it to finish me off, and he lost Chalid to Archeron. He still won the game, though.

wow this sounds fantastic! I have been playing this game for years, but playing 'efficiently' never really did anything for me. I like to chill, spam research, watch drama unfold. I suppose thats why I like Sidar. I feel like joining, and just having fun. I never bothered with the idea of MP because i figured id just get eaten. But if i am friendly and give away technology then it sounds like a recipe for fun!

offering my undying friendship for a svaltfar black mirror to give to rathus doesnt tempt the AI for some reason...

woa... just pictured the coolness that could ensure with a MP game... trading like weapons and units and crap. too bad this coming weekend looks busy, but mark my words! "Azael the Gray" will be there someday!

and this is exactly why unit-gifting needs to be Re-implemented.

Also, open borders (or at least an alliance) should allow your units to ride in another civ's boat.

damn, unit gifting died? Hummm... was that because it could be exploited? I cant think of too many ways, short of using infernals and mercurians trading owners AND units. (then again that could also be described as foresight)

I suppose this would be complicated, but i just pictured a trading screen with a list of technologies, cities, aaaand units. "I will grant you peace in exchange for one of your adventurer's grigori!"

alliance buddy system should totally be in there. almost seems strange to me that it isnt. sounds like something that shouldve been around in vanilla civ4

although I wouldnt know if it was, i havent played that since... before i found FfH...
(if i did play normal BTS again it would be ugly: "dude, why dont the Germans just make adepts and use spring on the desert...? Noob AI...")

Probably won't be MAKIN' IT meself on account o' needin' to SWAB ME DECKS and HAUL ME BOOTY to the Goodwill trailer and the RECYCLIN' CENTER, arrrr, but it's a fine day fer PLAYIN' THE LANUN, maties... a FINE DAY INDEED.

Edit: on an Arrrrrchipelago map

why is everyone leaving hamachi!!!!

Onionsoldier, any ideas?

I'm not sure if I will be playing anymore of these games for a while. The quality of them has sharply declined over these past few weeks, and I'm not having that much fun anymore. At best, we get maybe 4 or 5 people for a game; usually it's 2 or 3. On top of that, I have a lot of homework this semester, and it doesn't make sense to spend several hours playing a game that isn't fun anymore, when my time is so limited.

well, it does kinda make sense ... less people play the game these days, which in general can bring down the quality ... but its more or less, random, with sudden upswings, its never in a "state of decline"

Ergo, I will still be playing on Saturdays, and probably Tuesdays if anyone turns out.

Also, ive recently found the Kurios to be amazing to the point of possibly over-powered in MP, although that could just be Chalid talking.

//Indeed, perhaps if we played a little bit more like the AI, we would find these games enjoyable. The suggestion of course seems quite abhorent, but I suppose there could be some hidden truths if one dared to dig.

If you need a break, take a break by all means. And yes sir, do your homework and do not procrastinate. Doing so will make you very sad.

K, so i've been thinking, and this whole recent trend of "maximized strats" and etcetera do not seem conducive to the spirit of the role playing games. Therefore, I will make a proposal, that us veteran players choose random, or intentionally weaker, or mid-tier civilizations, in order to make the gameplay more balanced.

If we can get at least 5 people, the gameplay experience goes up markedly. I, for instance, know full well that my profiency with the Sidar is somewhat less than par (in normal FFA circumstances) therefore I promise, that if we have at least 5 people next game, I will play as the Sidar. (or another civ if the other players unanimously vote for it)

Grigori! No Chalid for you!

All good players must play Doviello and never build Horse archers! Slow 1 movement units only!
