Finland is in Scandinavia. Discuss.

Never mind. We all make mistakes. :)

I think this needs to be solved in the most civilized way possible:

A pit fight between 1 fin and 1 swede. Video tape it then post it to these boards and then the issue will finally be at rest.

How do you think Canada and US dispute things...... you got it... pit fighting

Aren't the Finns related to Estonians?

As Julian Delphiki said, at least the languages are. But with Latvians and Lithuanians we have much less common. Also as Estonia has been independent less than 20 years, Finland hasn't been as closely tied to it as with Sweden. Even before Schengen agreement you didn't need passport to travel in Nordic countries, and I think Nordic countries held same kind of ideologies, even if they acted out them differently.

Heh, I knew it wasn't correct. Is it pesäpello?

Pesäpallo. I don't remember the uniforms to be so outrageous, but haven't seen a game for years, who knows. Maybe it looks to foreign people as silly as circket. ;)

Aren't hockey championship games coming? ;)

Aren't hockey championship games coming?

ahh good point. OK a hockey fight between a fin and a swede would do just fine.

but since the championship game will be between Canada and the second best team this fight may have to happen during the tournament ;)

To get back to the topic, I thought everyone knew that Finns were Hungarians. Nordic Hungarians. ;)

No, Finland is NOT a part of what we swedes calls Skandinavien.

From Wikipedia:
Scandinavia is a historical and geographical region centered on the Scandinavian Peninsula in Northern Europe and includes the three kingdoms of Denmark, Norway and Sweden.

This thread should have been put in OT; more people would speak on it.

this thread is a ****** and no you SwedishGuy I am not jealous so shut up
I don't think Finns need to call themselves Scando's to be proud and I hate American Hobby Vikings like Swedish Guy and all those other losers
Real Vikings are cool just not you

Omg I am soo happy that you are not mad I have such a huge internet crush on SwedishGuy! :P =))))

If the Fins are Scandinavian, then the Turks living in Thrace are European.

The Turks living in Thrace are European, because they are in Europe. Although I am aware I could be leading this thread into a discussion about semantics, terms like "European" and "Scandanavian" should be used to refer to geographical boundries, because that is all Europe and Scandanavia are: imagined political/geographical regions.

Nationality is an entirely different concept, as you could argue that the Basques arn't Spanish for instance, but neither Europe nor Scandinavia are nations. If you really want to find out whether or not Finland is part of Scandanavia, all you really need to do is see whether or not it is part of the Scandanavian Penninsula.

It should be pointed out though that politically Finland is often attributed to Scandanavia because of its close relations with those countries that lie on the Penninsula, and its close, almost ambiguous proximity.

My point though is that culture and language are irrelevent in determining whether or not Finland is in Scandanavia, because language and culture do not define regionality, and Scandanavia is a region, not a nation.

What is an American hobby viking?

I'm 1/4 Norwegian and 1/4 Swedish, does that make me one?
Better yet, what is a real viking since if I'm not mistaken Swedishguy is from Sweden? Not that it necessarily makes him a viking but I would think that having viking ancestry would be one of the prerequirements.

Does it really matter? Finland could be a part of the moon for all I care. Who would want to be a part of the crummy scandinavia anyway? :D

Scandinavia as a cultural entity is Norway, Denmark and Sweden. As a geographical entity it is the scandinavian paninsula, i.e. Norway, Sweden and Finland. This, I think, is mostly reffered to as Greater Scandinavia.

A part of Scandinavia? Meh, don't think so. A part of Fennoscandia, for sure! Besides Fennoscandia sounds cooler than plain the Scandinavia. And as people have already said, it doesn't really matter as long as we can hang out with our western neighbours in the Nordic Council and support each other in the EU in our common nordic interests.

Texas steel cage match. Ukko vs. Odin. If Ukko wins, Finland can claim to be a part of Scandinavia. If Odin wins, no go.
