Firaxis Releases Civilization IV: Colonization Information, Features

Yes, I feel this is a golden opportunity missed that they aren't updating the original gameplay with at least one token native american civ. Portuguese are a natural to include. I'd also like to see some what-ifs from Dale's original mod, like the Italians and Germans, and might as well include the Russians as their fur trade did cover the west coast of North America.

As much as I want CIV4 development to continue, I may avoid this one at least until there are some decent mods.

One thing of note for those of you that were mentioning it in previous threads: it seems the Portuguese are not included.

As someone mentioned in another thread, that green square is the standard highlighting of a tile that occurs when you mouse over it in the WorldBuilder -- not another civilization's borders.

That was me :D

To bad Portugal and Poland aren't included.

I understand that Firaxis is trying to recreate the original Colonization game, but have to agree with others that only having four playable Civs seems to be setting the bar too low. The original Colonization was designed for what, an 80286 processor running DOS 5:rolleyes:

I'd like to see Portugal included as a playable Civ, not only for historical purposes, but also game replay purposes. I also say include the Vikings, since there is some evidence to suggest that the Vikings visited North America about 400-500 years before Columbus.

And what about the capability to play as the Aztecs/Inca/Mayans/American Indians and try to defend the ancestral hunting grounds from those nasty Europeans:crazyeye:

The vikings didn't try to "colonize" newfoundland and the game is about Colonization.

I think that they should include Every civ that colonized. that would be:

England
Scotland
France
Spain
Portugal
Denmark
Sweden
Netherlands
Belguim (but they colonized africa...)
Poland
Russia
Brandenburg/Germany

You still have to consider periods. Although it's not mentioned, for reason, this is a game of European Colonization - 1400s to 1700s. Given that, Portugal should be a player. Denmark, meh, not so much. As others have mentioned, I find 4 playable nations a bit shy.

I think it would have been nice to make the native american civs playable. I realize that this would be turning history on its ear, but it would be fun to be able to repel the colonists or even attack the old world.

Trading land? That sounds interesting. It would be nice if the concept of tile ownership was overhauled and land acquisition would become a more active process.

Rince

Yes, and it augurs well for a possible Civ5 new border system, not based on culture

Uh yes, Ginger is probably right, its a one square green border, so it seems to be some kind of editor shot.

Well, I dont expect to much. Remember, in original Colonization the player had to pay for using natives land squares. So maybe this will be the diplomacy part they called "trading land". I hope, i'm wrong again, but ...

They should expand the timeline to accomadate the Norwegians.

Thus, they would need to show the rise and fall of native empires, as well, which would be pretty awesome. Also, there would need to be ages.

Still....

I think they need

English
French
Spanish
Dutch
Portuguese
Russians???
Swedish???
Scottish???

What? There's no Dutch? Ridiculous.

No, the Dutch are indeed in the game.
Fight the Homeland and Establish a New Nation: Play as the English, Spanish, French or the Dutch and journey to a brave new world in search of freedom from your oppressive homeland

I would imagine its not too late to put them in, so hopefully some Firaxians will take notice. FWIW I personally think it would be ridiculous to exclude them.

I think it's possible they left out Portugal intentionally so that if they make an expansion pack, they can put Portugal in it, and it'll sell better that way.

I disagree! There is no "good" product. It's still the same. Continuous everything like the original.
By missing the Portuguese in the game, it's undoubtedly a great loss and a tremendous lack of consideration with History, of the Colonization of America!
SO WHAT IS BRAZIL???

agreed!!!

so much yada yada yada about the game, but there's no Portugal!?
i'm not a lier so I WON'T BUY CIV4 COLONIZATION!!!

Well, the Portuguese weren't in the original game, and if Firaxis is doing just a graphical remake, then we shouldn't expect anything new. It would be cool if you could play as them though, same with the Native tribes.
