I bought Civ4 a few days ago because I saw it at a friends, After playing the tutorial and 1 custom game I realized that there is so much more to think about rather than just clicking a bit. Everything is related with each other: bonuses, location, which civ etc.

So I thought in order to really enjoy this game I need to know what everything means and what the long-term advantages/dis-advantages are of things.

So I spend the last couple of days reading, primarily on this forum. And now I can play my first game (actually 3rd) with some preparation. And I thought I gained a lot of information from this site so why not make a log of my game here as well as maybe some of you can give me some tips in whatever situation I will encounter. Perhaps it is a good read for some future beginners as well.

If you think this shouldn't be here at all or in a different section please say it (or move or delete if your a moderator reading this).

I'll edit this post in a bit with my settings of the game and a screen of my starting position.

Welcome !

You're in the right section !

Do post your games, with your saves attached and detailed description of your strategic choices (some screenshots of your city management can help, too)

Glad to hear that, I'll post a screen and info and the save game.

Game type is Noble I left everything default except that I chose Saladin as my Civ.

Welcome to this game and the forums :goodjob:

I must say its quite brave to start on noble if youve never really played it before.

For the viewer could you hit the black button with the questionmark in the bottomright? Itll show you all resources and its way easier to see them on screenshots then.

Oh I didn't realized the screens get shrunk :P I'll make some with resources balloons.

Well you're already slowing down your start by taking an early religion... not that I can blame you, they're very tempting expecially if you start with mysticism, but now you'll be going for quite a while with no worked tiles.

As long as you have something for it to do, it's advised to build a worker first, unless there's seafood nearby. It's okay for the city to be undefended for the first two thousand years or so (until barbs show up) and while it halts growth, if you can quickly get say that corn farmed you'll make up for the delay.

No harm done though, after Polytheism and that warrior start building a worker and learning the early worker techs (agriculture, mining, bronze working, etc)

That was my plan,

The next turn my warrior was finished and I started working on a worker.

Just one more turn for Polytheism. After that I picked Agriculture.

My warrior got attacked by a bear so hes resting. After that I'm gonna search for Cyrus

Just as I typed this I met Julius Caesar his scout ran into my resting warrior.

p.s

When a tech is finished and when a building/unit is finished I get a screen to chose what to do next
Is there a way to disable that screen to first look around your empire again ? Or should you just have to do that before you end your turn and the next turn something is completed.

Ehh..Saladin is an OK. Civ to choose as a beginner. He's not bad, but there are better choices.

Civ is a game... you play it to enjoy it not have the best possible starting civ...

Looking at his avatar I'll guess he likes Saladin ;)

Good luck with that game but as other said, start at noble? Woah you got some balls lol.

Well the game suggests it as being the Medium setting. And i never play a game at easy so :P. Anyway I'll see how this turns out. If I get horrible beaten maybe I'll try my next game at chieftain or Warlord.

Sadly no but I have enabled "Wait at End of Turn" in game options and that makes it easy to change both before you hit next turn.

And try to leave that first hut for your capital´s border since you want a tech and borders along with scouts are the most efficient in getting just that. Sure if Cyrus would have taken it you would be peeved but ain´t that the game and that gives you a real reason to attack him whenever you are ready.

good luck with the game!

heed the advice on these forums (well, most of it)....these guys know their doo doo

i went from warlord to monarch via this forum (after being on noble for about 2 years)

:)

First, welcome to the forums Nash, and you are correct.

One important point to make clear, most players on this forum play with both the Warlords and Beyond the Sword expansion packs, so rules and advice are a little different for those game although the core game concepts are the same.

Also Nobel is the balanced setting so maybe it's a good way to gauge you abilities. Following advice as you go along may define your abilities and adjust level next game.

One last point, I think Saladin is one of the strongest leaders for the origional (Vanilla) civilization games as he is both Spiritual and Philosphical. Also with teh close marble consider trying to build the Oracle wonder for a free tech. Perhaps take a free tech that will grant religion, and use the Great Person Points to produce a Prophet for the Religions Shrine. A shrined religion is a very good way to build an economy and start yourself on teh right track! Just be careful not to rely on shrines as a crutch in future games.

Thank you for the tips Madscientist,

I'm gonna continue the game in a couple of minutes.
We'll see what happens :D

edit:

Also I might pick up one of the expansion packs if they really add much:D

Hehe, one nice thing is that you mention marble and elephants while the most important resource is the corn ;) Food is key so always try to find good city sites with food resources.

About the moving of the warrior, wait for that after you settlo the city. Only if you have settled a city you can get a tech from the goodie hut as far as I know. And if you can get the goodie hut by popping your cultural border, even better since that will give you the best goodie hut results.

As far as I can see your next viable city site is 1NW of the corn (1SW of the wine). This could be your commerce city. Enough food to get cottages all over. It will pick up a desert tile and a peek tile but don't worry about it.
