First Look: Kongo

Kongo is a really interesting civ, but isn't it a bit too good being next to them? I mean, you can have a free boost to your religion just spawning behind them! This could change the balance in the game, I hope this will not happens!

How can you hope this will not happen when this is exactly what will happen? You just described one of the outcomes that will be regularly happening with Kongo (closest civ to them that founds religion is going to have easier job spreading it) :p

I fail to see what's wrong with it, such dynamic interactions are fun and I prefer "reverse balance" of "everything is powerful" to flat balance "all abilities barely impact game".

I agree, and we are destined to be happy this time it seems. Almost everything in this game seems to be OP (abilities, CS bonuses, Wonders, Natural Wonders, etc.).

So M'vemba's leader agenda is that he wants you to spread your religion to him, eh?

Im sure him and Phillip of Spain are gonna be the best of friends.

Agreed. One of my favourite boardgames is The Voyages of Marco Polo. Everything seems to be overpowered and you think it can't possibly work but it does and it's beautiful. Asymmetry can be a lot of fun. :)

Kongo seems to fit right in with some very powerful abilities. :)

The thing i hope it doesn't happen is the unbalance for the game!!!
The problem with this ability is that it powers up not only Kongo but also the one closer to him, that's why I mean it unbalance a bit the game. Anyway I'm just supposing, I still don't have civ VI so let's just hope for the best!

Kongo has been the Civ I've been most anxious to see and based on this I'm cautiously excited, and they will probably my first-out-of-the-box choice. I think it'd be interesting if, post-conversion, Mvembe's leader name changes to Alfonso I (and I really, really like the idea posted above that his dress change to reflect the style of whomever converted him - it might be hell to animate without clipping and other errors but I'd be willing to forgive them for something that cool and dynamic.)

Aside from the weird religion game that's so hard for us to gauge right now, this seems like a Civ with great all-around abilities for population, money, culture and diplomatic relations. The concept of "please come give us your religion psst we can do more with it than you can" is really hard to judge right now but is intriguing.

That depends. If the Religious Victory requires ownership of the Holy City, which is very likely, then Kongo will eventually turn against its neighboor if it chooses to follow that victory,

A nice thought about the Ngao Mbebe: between the sight through jungle, the lack of an iron requirement, and the protection against ranged units, plus the almost certain jungle start-bias that Kongo will get and the movement penalty it will give to mounted units, Kongo has some decent defense against Scythia specifically.

The funny thing will be watching diplomacy shifts as Kongo initally wilfully lets a neigbours spread its religions to its cities but then progressively takes measures to prevent said neighbour from winning a religious victory by helping its greatest religious rival.

We'll have to see exactly how Mvemba a Nvinga's restriction is implemented.

If its simply that he can't build Holy Districts, then:

It is still possible to get a Great Prophet. Either from building Stonehenge OR using patronage to buy a Great Prophet with either gold or faith.

Of course the Great Prophet would still need to found the religion, which requires either building Stonehenge, conquering Stonehenge, or conquering/trading for a city with a Holy District.

Also, if he conquers/trades for a city with a Holy District, that still might generate Great Prophet points.

Kandi (spelling?) the new religious CS looks like Kongos best friend, +100% faith from relics and gain a relic every time a NW is discovered, every one you find is +2 food +2 production 4 gold and 8 faith and some turism! that is nice!

The question is, does Kandi's bonus apply for each TILE of a natural wonder you discover? In the playthroughs we've seen, each Tile triggered the "You found a Natural Wonder" popup.

The four tile swamp would be instant win for kandi suzerin kongo if that is the case. myabe this is the nerf worthy thing tha t was tweeted about?

Do the martyr promotion you get from Mont St. Michael allow you to sacrifice apostels to create relics, would in such case be a good pick for Kongo.

Relics are a problem for Kongo because there is nowhere to Put them.
The relic slots we know about are
Palace
Mont st. Michael

and the Temple....which is in the Holy Site

Unless the Archeological museum can also House Relics (like the art one can house both Sculpture and Religious Art), Kongo really can't get them

Hmmm. I didn't think of that. What a problem.
