Fix-It List

@bpr5016
there are some error messages in this log that hint at either a corrupted or missing file. Did Gold edition ever work? If yes what did you do in between it working and not working?

@rodra62: Welcome to CFC :)
try renaming or deleting your Installshield folder.

yeah it worked for a few days but then stopped one day all of a sudden as indicated by my first set of logs. do you think i should try uninstalling then reinstalling? there's no option in my civ4 folder to uninstall, so how should i go about manually doing so?

EDIT** During the time period of the game not working.. i cleaned up a lot of spyware and malware, updated my graphics card driver thing off the Dell website, and tried to reinstall the game so it would overwrite the crash error i kept getting. one, if not more, of these things i did probably made the game even less playable.

:hmm: you should probably do a clean uninstall/reinstall - the problem is that the uninstaller in the windows control panel leaves stuff behind and you might need to do some manual deletion before reinstalling. Or is there no uninstall routine registered in the control panel?
I could post a complete uninstall routine for Civ4 and Warlords - but I am not sure if gold edition has the same file names. Before I do that could you do the following:

click start, click run then type regedit hit enter.
In the registry search for
Firaxis Games
there will be quite a few entries but you need to make a note of any that have a string called ProductGuid I'd need to know the name of this, it'll be something like: {CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8} ... There may either be one (for gold edition) or 2 for the two games separately - which is the thing I am not sure about... You can just copy this ProductGuid when you click on it once or twice - but make sure NOT to change anything at this point ;)

okay I spent a while searching through the registry, but I can't find any registry entries under Firaxis games titled ProductGuid. For that matter, there are only two things I found under Firaxis games tab in the registry..

>>> (Default)________FEG_SZ_________(value not set)
>>> Order___________REG_BINARY_____08 00 00 00 02 00 00 00 08 01 00 00 01...(etc)

and for that matter, I searched the registry for ProductGuid and I found it under a few different programs like Trend Micro PC-cillin but nothing relating to Firaxis games. I also searched for Civilizations and only came up with a .exe file for Civ4 and then some old Civ3 stuff lying around. If I access my computer the Civilization 4 Gold is in the file located:

C:\Program Files\2K Games\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 Gold

but as far as registry entries go I didn't come up with anything. :confused:

would have been too easy ;)
do the following - note that the cryptic file names listed below are for the seperate games - you might want to look through all the (hopefully not too many) directories in install shield installation information and delete those that contain civilization files - if in doubt just move them until you are finished reinstalling and move them back afterwards. Also if the directories where you need to delete stuff manually do not exist but gold edition directories do - delete those :) Tell me if it helped :)

install the most recent version of DirectX 9c from Microsoft

then do the following for a clean reinstall:

Uninstall and Reinstall Gold

Try to follow this order when doing stuff:
Use Control panel to uninstall Beyond the Sword, then Warlords, then Vanilla
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\warlords" manually
(note: application data is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files, also these directories in application data are sometimes removed by the uninstall routine)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}" (Civ4)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{3E4B349F-10B5-4586-9D99-489A90A8B228}" (Warlords)
(note: InstallShield Installation Information is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files).
Install Gold Edition

okay sorry to be a nuisance, but just to clarify..

step 1) try to Add/Remove Civ4 (warlords to vanilla)
step 2) delete the cryptic files you listed (warlords to vanilla)
step 3) reinstall gold

did i get it right???:D

Ori -

I renamed the Installshield file and when i went to uninstall the game, I got another error: Error loading C:\Progra~\Common~1\Instal~1\Profes~1\Runtime\11\00\Intel32\Ctor.dll The Specified module could not be found.

@roldra62:

Delete "...\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4"
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\sid meier's civilization 4"
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" (is not always created)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}"

open the registry editor (Start > Run > regedit) and delete
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Uninstall\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}

install the most recent version of DirectX 9c from Microsoft
Install Civ4, immediately patch it to 1.61 (download it fresh from here)
Install the 1.74 patch, get it from here

game runs perfectly except for europe 1939 scenario multiplayer

me and my mate both get no sound whatsoever ?

this only happens in this scenario

I didn't have the patience to read through the other 40 pages of posting, so can anyone tell me how to fix my game.
Situation:
I installed the regular version of civilization IV, and it worked perfectly fine for like two weeks. Then it said the file used to launch the game was missing. I thought I could just un-install then re-install the game. I told it to un-install and it deleted every file related to civ IV altogether, but the control panel says the program is still there. If I try to re-install it, it tells me the game is already installed, and if I try to uninstall it again, i get this error message:

Error Code: -5004 : 0x8007007e
Error Information:
>SetupDLL\SetupDLL.cpp (3078)
PAPP:Sid Meier's Civilization 4
PVENDOR:Firaxis Games (##IDS_PRODUCT_URL##)
PGUID:CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8

Anyone help at all would be much appreciated.

The program is in my control panel, when I try to uninstall it I get that error. No expansion packs at all. It crashed when the game recommended I download a patch. There are absolutely no file left reltaed to civ IV that I could find.

do the following (if not already done):

Delete "...\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4"
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\sid meier's civilization 4"
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" (is not always created)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}"

Note: Installshield Information and Application Data are hidden directories - you need to set windows explorer to show hidden files.

open the registry editor (Start > Run > regedit) and delete
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Uninstall\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}

install the most recent version of DirectX 9c from Microsoft
Install Civ4, immediately patch it to 1.61 (download it fresh from here)
Install the 1.74 patch, get it from here
