Flags!

So do most people.

But I genuinely think the fern should stick as our sporting symbol. The Silver fern represents New Zealand's sporting heritage and I don't think I want this country to be represented to the rest of the world as a mere jock country. (And it's not like our sports teams have been doing anything great lately)

I just made this flag for the People's Republic of South Africa:

The black star is a bit redundant, I think.

The black star is a bit redundant, I think.

The black star is a Pan-Africa symbol, not of communism. Its currently found in the flags of 3 African nations and goes back the Black Star Line developed by Marcus Garvey in the 1920s, an attempt at Black economic independence.

"Pan-African colors are black, red, gold and green. Black is a color of skin of African people, red represents noble blood of black people which is spilled in the occupation of Africa, gold color represents gold and riches which is taken from African people and the green represents the vegetation of Ethiopia, the promised land." The blue I included is also part of the flag of South Africa and the Southern African Development Community (which has all the nations under my rule) which "symbolises the sky and ocean that bring water and life." I put the hammer and sickle in with the red to combine pan-african values with that of traditional communism.

Why not something more African, like an AK-47 and a hoe, instead of the hammer and sickle?

Simply because I didn't find a nice ak-47/hoe decal to copy and paste (Mozambique also has a yellow star and book behind the ak-47/hoe). And I can't steal from the other People's Republics of using a gold star because I have a black star. So hammer and sickle it is.

I will admit it kind of makes it look like a soviet republic or something.

Ok yea so disregard that last post kind of. I decided to try going with your Mozambique idea (I don't want to steal from Angola since its not part of the People's Republic of South Africa). Which do you think looks best?

If you think the commie star looks better, I could try removing the black star and mayhaps replacing the blue with black. Also now I have like 50 different ideas like which color goes where, maybe making red the middle with the symbol in the middle and changing where green and black are. Maybe not have black banner at all, have two green and the two gold (like the African Union flag) with the middle having the red with the mozambique emblem.

The black star is a Pan-Africa symbol, not of communism.

My point is that it makes for inconsistent symbology. Why do you need a Pan-Africa symbol when you have (internationalist) communism, anyway?

Maybe it is Pan-African Communism. "We Africans are the only ones who can have equality because a lot of us are still egalitarian!" or something.

Who says countries/leaders/movements are always consistent? :p

The idea that Pan-Africanism can only be achieved through communism/socialism since it is an idea transcends nations and ethnicities.

Usually African socialism has not been part of an international worker's revolution, but more an attempt to be anti-capitalist which is linked to European imperialism. Communism is more a means to an end of a unified strong Africa. The flag is meant to represent we are Africans first an foremost, and communists second.

I'm just saying, the rest of the flag is Pan-African enough without the star, and I don't think you include two such symbols/different symbol groups on the same flag in general.

The Soviet flag is Communist enough with it being all red (okay, it's not exclusively Communist but it became deeply associated with Communism--but maybe it's because of the Soviet flag itself but blah blah blah)m, but they just had to add in the [wiki]hamer and sickle[/wiki], no?

Of course, you might think that the Soviet flag is not a very good flag, but I'm just pointing out that redundant symbolism in flags is not without precedent (okay wait, no, I'm a bit lost on my own point).

<currently looking for a better OTL example of redundant symbolism .. DONE!>

The Flag of Ghana.
