Right, names Descriptions and backgrounds for Celts:
Warrior:- Vanilla guy is fine. He's practically naked (Skyclad), cute and trough we love spears and swords even we used axes at first.
Archer:- Kern: light javelineer that still bugged elizabethan troops. Peasants so not skyclad.
Spearman:- Gaestatae. Fought the legions and bands like this augmented noble warriors in all parts of Celtic World. Skyclad, Woad, oval shielr, Long-bladed spear ( like Impi's). Skyclad and woad important for religious reasons.
Swordsmen:- These we have. Our old Gallic Swordsmen buddies. Would prefere to see them with large oval shield but happy enough with annimation. Anyone Bothered By the fact that theese guys move faster than Legions? Don't be. These guys are the Warrior-Noble elite not just any old guy with a weapon. They moved by Chariot with light supplies ( since Celts had strict laws on hospitality), Skirmished from them with Javelins before closing on foot with swords, keeping Chariots close by for hit and run attacks. Theese guys are not the Legion Fodder that many people think they were. Ancient Celts were Scary. Hannibal and Phyrus both failed to take Rome against the Roman Republic. Brennus took it. Germans Destroyed 2 legions in the famous battle of the Teutoborg forest. Took them 3 days and Herman was one of the Roman commanders. Celts destroyed did the same in one day each at Allalia and Telemon and helped Hannibal do the same at Cannae and Trebia Lake. There will be no more Dissing of Celtic warriors OK?
Horsemen:-Oval shield, Trousers, Spear/javelin, topless. And a Horse. Dont know ancient Gallic name but if you wanted could give you some Gaelic suggestions.
Chariots:- Vanilla chariot would do fine for the early bronze-age chariots used before the major Celtic Expansions began. Celts used Chariots later than anyone else in Europe by a wide margin but later Chariots looked considerably different. Would make a good UU for Britons if anyone was interested.
Pikemen:- Schiltrons. Yep good Auld Braveheart-esqe, Battle of Bannockburn " Stich-this ye Sassanach Jessie" pikemen. Less armour than vanilla Pike and were a little quicker and looser but Pikemen none the less, say it with me "FREEEEEEDOMMMMM!"
Knights:- Thanes. Oval shield, troosers, Javelins, Longsword, Chainmail shirt. Medieval Celtic Kingdoms had equivalents or Norman Knights etc. but we're lookin for Distinctive, independant character right? Thanes is a dark age name but Gallic nobles sometimes fought like this against Legions. Kept about 3 horses each to stay in the fight longer. Extras were kept out of the way on the wings.
Medieval Infantry:- Gallowglachts. Medieval Celtic infantry. Though Catholic by this era these psychos still took heads and drank blood. This unit has advantage of already having very cool and appropriate animations already.
Longbowmen:-Welsh Longbowmen. Kryten has pointed out that only England should have Longbowmen. Mostly right. Although many people used Longbows they didn't use them in the devastating drilled way the English did. However they picked up Longbows from the Welsh. Not only did the Welsh have longbows though they also used them in Large numbers is devestating ambushes and battles against Vikings, Saxons and Normans invasions. The english took these bows and bowmen and developed their tactics for open battle and kicked thecrap out of french Knights. I agree that everyone else should get crossbows but English and Celts should get Longbows.
Musketmen:- Highlanders. Bonnie prince Charlie Chapies. Fired muskets then charged in with Claymores. VERY effective attack. And heres the problem. Musketmen are defensive with low attack. Highlanders have a lethal attack and relatively low Defence (reflecting tactics not bravery). Maybe use as an upgrade for Gallowglachts giving defensive bombardmen, 2 move and ignore hills mountain? I know that this is meant to be for flavour units rather than UU's but highlanders are characterfull and rather important to Celts.
_Blackguard. Musketmen in Kilts and Bearskin Hats. If you insist on having your musketmen line up in ranks instead of having them charge like real Celts do. A scottish unit that fought (and still does ) in the British Army.
Take your pick. Preferably use both.
Riflemen:- Fenians. As in Fenian invasion of Canada. Though Ireland wasn't independant at the time, they were still resisting. They hatched a plan use Irish-American Veterans of the American civil war to invade Canada and trade it back to the Empire in return for Irish independance. The US made no move to stop the buildup of arms or the initial crossing of the border. The Irish were winning ( not because the Canadians were bad or anything were talking Vets against militia here! ) until the British made it clear to the US that there would serious repercusions if the US didnt stop Fenian troops and supplies crossing the border. They did. (why let them across in the first place then huh?). The fenians then started to retreat and there was one more battle. A unit of Regular cavalry vs Fenian infantry. The Canadians claim this one as a victory but im not so sure. Making retreating infantry retreat doesn't sound like much of a victory. However since they were defending their country from an unprovoced (and rather strange) invasion I'm willing to let this one go.
Cavalry:-Hussars with Bearskin hat and Kilts will do nicely, thank you very much.
Sorry bout the length. You need anymore on the Celts gimme a shout.
