Football Thread No. 9

When your against a massive team you aren't expecting anything from it, so you relax and that can make you play better. Supposedly some players will get motivated from playing a big team and put in a better performance. I think a player would get more fired up for a season opener vs the mighty manchester united on a monday night with the rest of the league watching them, then playing long-ball Stoke on a snowy, wet wensday night in the middle of January.
It's basic pop-psychology :P

It's the same with Arsenal at the moment. We tend do OK against the other big teams, but we drop points left right and centre against the mid-table clubs.

Man U have just released details of Van Persie's first pay packet:

After watching Liverpool's antics at Tynecastle, I believe holy_king's fears are justified.

Pre-season I was really buying into the BR philosopy of keeping the ball, ingraitiating his ethos into the Liverpool culture, replacing the "this is anfield" sign in the stadium, going on a freakin' night out in Liverpool to meet the natives, installing a possession based type of football - i BOUGHT IT ALL! Now after 3 Europa League games vs terrible opponents and getting thrashed by the Baggies, i'm a bit more uncertain. I haven't give up completely but it's not the dream start. Plus his signings seem a bit odd...
On the other hand Guardiola lost his first game and drew his second. SAF had a poor few opening SEASONS and they are the very best..

Real Madrid's players show what they can do individually and how mediocre Mourinho is, with a coach that attempted to play football they'd fare much better. And Barcelona definitely need a new goalkeeper, Valdés is too complacent.

I wonder why they haven't bought an elite goalkeeper yet. And it's true about Madrid playing like crap with Mourinho as a coach; they did so much better after the 1-1, when both sides played offensively. I think that Mourinho believes that Real can't play attacking football against Barça without being outscored, so they try to stay in the back and look for counter attacks.

Don't worry, uncle moneybags, you'll get him somehow.

Hmmnope.

Interesting results btw.

Another 0-0 from Arsenal. If we were a chess player at least our king would be well protected.

Just came to post this! First live premier league game I've ever watched. Specifically got Fox Soccer Channel to watch my beloved Arsenal. Nobody has scored against them yet this season, woo! Course, they've not scored either.

Currently waiting for Liverpool vs Manchester City to start in a few minutes.

Plenty of chances, just lacking that finishing touch, which I think Giroud is meant to be providing. Need to start taking some of those half chances pretty quick if they want to get anywhere this season

I dunno about plenty; there were no chances that struck me as being better than Giroud's against Sunderland last week. Are best chances usually ended up being over-dribbled by Gerv or Diaby. Podolski looked much better on the left hand side this week than he did on the middle last week. Cazorla was fantastic once again, but tired in the second half.
