Football Thread No. 9

I prefer Walcott to Gervinho. G just seems to dribble around too much and fails to pass. I think Theodore is underrated too, his stats last year in the league were very good.
I'm worried about Arsenal but i am glad they were not bullied around by Stoke.

Theo tends to do well in big games or games that we're winning, but he tends to underperform in games we should easily win. Gerv tends to be the opposite. I'd take Theo over Gerv, I think they're both quite limited in what they can do but at least Theo's pace forces the opponents defence to generally stay back.

Gerv I find immensely frustrating. When he gets the ball you know exactly what he's going to do, run at and maybe beat a defender. Followed by something anticlimactic. Every . Single. Time.

That's quite an interesting story you've got now, TheLastOne.

I guess sadly for them this time the opponents were far too strong for it to prevent defeat. It's still pretty bad behaviour, hopefully UEFA will deal with it before anyone gets the idea that this is a good permanent tactic.

Should do the same as CONMEBOL does, and force teams to choose either to play at their home games behind closed doors or at a stadium not their own, as far away within the same country as possible.

it used to be a permanent tactic and still is pretty common.

But unlike that situation, you can't just leave a few hundred Swedes off the hook.

On other news, Argentine football has suspended 140-odd intermediaries, representatives and other assorted middlemen because of tax evasion, e.g. selling players to Locarno and then said players mysteriously appearing in big cities like Milan or London or Madrid.

As everybody knows, Spain is the only country that matters in this sport. :mischief:

So who do you think will win the Spanish Supercup? Do you think that it can harm Mourinho if he loses?

Well, Barcelona's latest spate of triumphs means that the head-to-head record between them and the Mandrilistas is now tied. Will they break the tie today?

The draw
  • Group A: Porto, Dynamo Kiev, Paris St-Germain, Dinamo Zagreb
  • Group B: Arsenal, Schalke, Olympiakos, Montpellier
  • Group C: Milan, Zenit St Petersburg, Anderlecht, Malaga
  • Group D: Real Madrid, Manchester City, Ajax, Borussia Dortmund
  • Group E: Chelsea, Shakhtar Donetsk, Juventus, Nordsjaelland
  • Group F: Bayern Munich, Valencia, Lille, Bate Borisov
  • Group G: Barcelona, Benfica, Spartak Moscow, Celtic
  • Group H: Manchester United, Braga, Galatasaray, Cluj
Barcelona-Celtic again.

Yay, we got a relatively easy group! And the only far away match is in... Moscow, duh. Hope we don't go there in winter.

All days are winter days in Mother Russia.

I don't understand how they can put the winner of La Liga, the EPL, the Bundesliga and, uhh, the Dutch league in the same group.

Oh dear.

This will be difficult for City. I think we can beat Dortmund and Ajax, but Real Madrid might be more difficult. I think City will make it to the knockout stages though.

No. You WILL make it to knockout. And you WILL win Real Madrid. You HAVE to.

And Man U gets an easy group again.

Eredivisie

Ajax is probably going to end up #4 in the group. Few Dutch successes this year, I guess. Heerenveen, Feyenoord and Vitesse are already out of the Europa League.

So the Citi$ens are already preparing for the Europa League?
