Football Thread No. 9

I have checked various sources and there is no definite answer. It's down to whether you include the millions of pounds players earn in sponsership deals and extas and I don't think anybody apart from the player. club and agent know how much they earn in one week for definite. For CR7 I think it's safe to say he is amongst the top 5 earners.

Better compare, that's a Madrid-biased journal, and it is possible that it has a CR7 bias.

Of course I've been there! If you live in Barcelona you must go there to watch a match at least once in your life! Unless you don't care about football or you can't afford it. It has a great ambiance, but it has a tempo and a character defined as peculiar or even cold sometimes. It also depends on the match.
Or, also, unless you support His Majesty's Royal Club, Espanyol.
...he's the second highest paid player in the world.
Including sponsorship deals and stuff I think.

Nah. If you support Espanyol you'll eventually go to Camp Nou to watch a Barça-Espanyol. :p

Although the opposite is impossible because Espanyol doesn't let Barça supporters into their stadium. :(

Not even for away games? You should just infiltrate the place then.

Ya, we're gonna kidnap Espanyol supporters with the tickets and change them for Barça supporters... :mwaha:

What, he's nice. I preferred Touré, but it hurt that he went to the City, although I can understand.

He is an exceptional player, he needs to stop the diving though. He is world number 1 in diving :P

Ya, that's what I don't like. Although I wouldn't say #1... Alves spectacularly dives sometimes and other players from other clubs too, let's be honest.

Yeah it's sad. I can understand if a player is hit by another player's legs and goes down even if it is a little soft but i hate the thearatrics. The biggest diver in the EPL is Ashley Young, he has mastered it so well that every fall he lands on his shoulders with his legs in the air. Makes it look very dramatic.
It's why I like Messi so much. He doesn't dive, he rides the challenge and gets forward - thats a testament to his ability and class.

On your Toure issue I agree with you. He is outstanding for Manchester City. I think he is the best premier league midfielder at the moment.

Yeah, he was just being awesome here. He had those moments (and I believe he still has them) when he'd catch the ball and run towards the goal to score with a powerful shot. Although of course that's not the most important thing. These are details that make him awesomer. ;)

Ronaldo is sad because he will never be #1, not as long Messi and Iniesta keep playing. Or unless Portugal wins the WC and he scores more goals than Messi.

If Messi breaks both legs and ruptures both anterior cruciate ligaments in his knees (i hate that injury on FM :( ) and Messi is forced into retirement CR7 will be number 1#. No shame in being number 2 to Lionel, which CR7 admits he is. CR7 will always be remembered as one of the greatest footballers ever. In my mind he is up there with your Pele, Maradonna, Messi catergory now what is it 150 goals in 149 games for Madrid?! He was in the Zidane, Laudrup, Hagi catergory but i promoted him ;)

Ronaldo's pay isn't that big as far as the top players are concerned. Esp. if warpus is correct, he probably feels people in charge don't appreciate him. He feels he had a superlative season last year, but because Philip IV couldn't hold Iberia together he isn't the right nationality and he didn't win any international tournament, so Iniesta robs him of player of the year. And the lack of money probably makes him more likely to be "sad" about other things, the same way the US is more likely to be "sad" about democracy in some country if the leader isn't doing what he's told in relation to trade rights, arms exports, oil, etc.

I did some digging and here

Ronaldo, 27, is on £9.6m a year but, because of Spain’s easygoing tax regime, takes home £7.2m.

He is now demanding take-home pay of £12m a year. Even under existing tax rules, that would mean £14.5m a year gross.

The problem for Madrid is that, in two years’ time, Ronaldo’s tax rate will jump from 24 to 52 per cent.

And it means that in order for him to get £12m after tax they will have to cough up almost £25m a year — £480,000 a WEEK.

So I suppose it does seem like it's a $$$ issue... but there might be more going on that we don't know about

I'm not surprised Real don't want to pay him that much though - assuming that the numbers given above are actually what Ronaldo is asking for.. With Fair Play rules and all that jazz all the big clubs are looking for ways to cut spending..

Messi is, of course, #1, but C. Ronaldo (in that Euro semi) has achieved something that no one in History has achieved before: he made the Catalans happy to cheer for Spain. Finally, after 500 years Catalans became Spaniards! Legend! :goodjob:
He deserves a Prince of Asturias award at the very least, and he is sad because they're not giving him one.
