Fourth Edition D&D

dude, its all about RL friends and a way to game together in person and drink
That's probably the last things i imagined paper D&D players would do. :crazyeye: But i wouldn't know much about that - paper D&D doesn't exist here. :)
Maybe i did have preconceptions of your people/race:p. I guess i should make a judgement when i see it all with my own eyes - if that will ever happen. :)
They had an awesome universe with the Planescape campaign setting, but unfortunately it was discontinued. I agree that Faerun is a little dull and run out of the mill. It's the sort of universe that the gamemaster is expected to flesh out.
Yea - i have to admit. There were a lot of parts of it that were utterly fascinating in there.
It was a nice change from the usual:

Oh no, a real role-player! Run for the hills!

Yeah you better watch out

when i run "medieval" Dungeons and Dragons it is a combinations of Planescape and Sword's and Sorcery's Scarred Lands.

but right now im running a starwars d20

There IS NO FOURTH EDITION.

Seriously. It's a bad joke. And they promised that it wouldn't be out until Feb 09 at the outside. And they're making rust monster damage disappear after 5 minutes to prevent the players suffering losses. Bad decisions all round.

I'll stick with 3.5, thank you very much!

I've been playing my first ever game of D&D these past few weeks, and it's lot more fun than I thought. Far more actual chatting with friends and having fun, rather than a lot of calculating things out with pen and paper. Which is lucky really, as my maths skills are virtually non-existent.

@Heretic: Love that comic :goodjob: . My favourite is this one, as I've already seen this sort of over-the-top thinking happen so many times.

Spoiler :

SO TRUE!! Hahaha.

How many times did I have to give up and tell the players something I thought that any moron could figure out!

I, as well, played decades ago.

is it april...?

No, I'm just in denial of the fact that 4th edition is turning away from verisimilitude (like realism, except in a fantasy setting) and towards Console RPG style events where nothing bad is permanent.:crazyeye:

You can always go into purist mode and declare that if this isn't the Dungeon Master guide in use, it's not AD&D anyway. It is what we used back in the day. :D

I'm not a purist or anything of the sort. I just resent, among other things, the fact that rust monsters will now damage your equipment, and then the damage will go away after the battle.

Well, house rules override everything, right?

Hmm. I played in 9th grade briefly. Oh my, over two decades ago.

Exactly. I played in the early - mid 80s. Then it went electronic with gems like " Pool of Radiance".

All this is , according to my D&D playing friends, is a money grab. "Hey we want money so here you go, buy all our new books. We know you game developers aren't even done using v3 but what even. Pay up sucker!!!"

4th edition?? i thought 'living greyhawk' used that ages ago? it certainly did when i last paid a visit a couple of years ago, now it's called 3.5

1st edition was enough. you could alter it how you wished (white dwarf magazine was particularly useful). it's a pity how it went after that. incidentally, a lasting regret i have is when i popped into a specialist game shop in glasgow and saw the original blue book rules. i browsed through it but never bought it. i wonder how much it's worth now? :(

this is a game called Dungeons and Dragons, and Wizards of the Coast has created a new edition! first one since 2003
i dont know about you, but i game and i will buy this just because the money is burning a hole in my wallet. :p
I recommend playing Hackmaster rather than D&D. It's much more "pure" ;)

That's insane! The first good D&D games used 1st edition rules.
Nothing beats the Gold Box AD&D games (Pool of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds etc.), and they all used 2nd edition rules.

What good D&D computer game used 1st edition rules?

Why would you say that? D&D's rules are much more fun than most RPG systems.
BS IMO.

It has always been hack&slash type compared to many other roleplaying games when it comes to pen&paper roleplaying games and computer games could be much better with their own systems.

It's of course purely matter of taste but for me the rules have always been inconsistent, dull and unrealistic as hell. Not forgetting, completely killing every fun you ever have had playing those games.

And the system supported real "roleplaying" as much as of renting "Legend" from vid store beforehand the session started and then mimicking it for the purpose of roleplay.

D&D has made quite lot good for roleplaying and then lots and lots bad as people have turned down other systems for this popular system that simply sucks bad.

All IMHO of course.

EDIT: Don't know about these new rules though, haven't been in the "scene" for few years now.

Well, do you have examples of better systems?

Better systems for what?
It entirely depends from what kind of experience you're after and I would have to stracth bit head to come out with names of some games as it's been a while I have been involved but you can find even some free roleplaying games from Internet that probably can kick D&D out of the table any day.

People are just accustomized to play D&D.
It's probably not the worst system I have encountered but in some cases close.

And I'm talking about the system, not about the background of the game world etc.

Some systems of course like Middle-Earth and Rolemaster are very heavy but then again there are other systems that are lighter with bit of customizing for the use of specific group gets you much better going than D&D.

It's of course just my opinion but while we're at it and so this wouldn't turn just you asking from me "Why you think D&D sucks".
What exactly makes D&D fun for you compared to other systems?
